Jessica Lange Regis Dialogue with Molly Haskell, 1997 Bruce Jenkins: Let me say that these dialogues have for the better part of this decade focused on that part of cinema devoted to narrative or dramatic filmmaking, and we've had evenings with actors, directors, cinematographers, and I would say really especially with those performers that we identify with the cutting edge of narrative filmmaking. In describing tonight's guest, Molly Haskell spoke of a creative artist who not only did a sizeable number of important projects but more importantly, did the projects that she herself wanted to see made. The same I think can be said about Molly Haskell. She began in the 1960s working in New York for the French Film Office at that point where the French New Wave needed a promoter and a writer and a translator. She eventually wrote the landmark book From Reverence to Rape on women in cinema from 1973 and republished in 1987, and did sizable stints as the film reviewer for Vogue magazine, The Village Voice, New York magazine, New York Observer, and more recently, for On the Issues. Her most recent book, Holding My Own in No Man's Land, contains her last two decades' worth of writing. I'm please to say it's in the Walker bookstore, as well. Our other guest tonight needs no introduction here in the Twin Cities nor in Cloquet, Minnesota, nor would I say anyplace in the world that motion pictures are watched and cherished. She's an internationally recognized star, but she's really a unique star. -

‘BRIDAL WAVE’ PRODUCTION BIOS MICHAEL M. SCOTT (Executive Producer, Director) – As a director and producer, Michael Scott has been a creative force behind 16 television films for cable and network since 1990. Previously, he had a successful 10-year career producing, writing and directing documentaries and reality programs. In 2008, Scott served as co-executive producer for the Lifetime Original movie titled “The Two Mr. Kissels,” starring John Stamos. As a director, he recently delivered “Special Delivery,” starring Lisa Edelstein and Brenda Song. Scott directed several other films for the Lifetime Network, including “Murder on Pleasant Drive,” “Tell Me No Lies,” “Her Sister’s Keeper” and “Best Friends.” For Hallmark Channel, Scott directed the 2009 holiday movie, “Debbie Macomber’s Mrs. Miracle,” followed in 2010 by “Debbie Macomber’s Call Me Mrs. Miracle” and the Hallmark Channel Original Movies “Edge of the Garden” and “Window Wonderland.” Other directing credits include “Dangerous Heart” (USA Network), “Murder at 75 Birch” (CBS), “Like Father, Like Santa” (Fox Family), “Desperate Justice” (Lifetime) and “Escape From Terror” (NBC). Scott’s producing credits include “Murder 101” (USA), directed by Academy Award®- winning writer Bill Condon, “Sweet Poison” (USA) and “Dead in the Water” (USA) starring Bryan Brown and Teri Hatcher. Having grown up in Mexico, Scott is fluent in Spanish and recently published a biographical book he collaborated on with journalist Jeff Morley about his father, who was CIA Station Chief in Mexico City for 15 years during the height of the Cold War. Cedars-Sinai’s outstanding fiscal year 2019 extended throughout the institution, including extraordinary growth and achievements in our academic programs (major research findings and a record number of advanced degrees awarded in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences) . And strong donor support helped our development team raise a record $120 million in philanthropy. Many of these gifts, small and large, came from grateful patients, reflecting their appreciation for the compassionate expertise of our physicians, nurses, pharmacists, other health professionals and support staff . Meanwhile, we cared for more outpatients and inpatients than ever before throughout Southern California . This was due to several factors, including the continued growth and geographic expansion of our network in Santa Monica and the Valley and clinical enhancements at Cedars-Sinai Marina del Rey Hospital. Using Film and Critical Pedagogy in the Standards-Based Classroom
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF John D. Divelbiss for the degree of Master of Arts in English presented on April 28, 2014. Title: Re-Viewing the Canon: Using Film and Critical Pedagogy in the Standards-based Classroom Abstract approved: __________________________________________________________________ Jon R. Lewis This thesis analyzes the efficacy of emancipatory (critical) pedagogical practices in an educational climate of standards-based reform. Using two films noir of the blacklist era—Body and Soul and Crossfire—as the core texts of a unit in a secondary school curriculum, I argue that an emphasis on student agency and a de-centering of curriculum and instruction is not only compatible with national reforms like the Common Core State Standards but is essential for English/language arts classrooms in the 21st century. In addition to a scholarly review of critical pedagogy and media literacy, and close readings of the two films themselves, this thesis also ends with an informal case study in which both films-as-texts were taught to 9th grade students. By combining theory and practice, I was able to model the praxis at the heart of critical pedagogy, what Paulo Freire calls in Pedagogy of the Oppressed, “reflection and action upon the world in order to transform it.” The films of the blacklist match current national mandates for relevant texts, for media and visual literacy, and for authentic and emancipatory pedagogy. Narrowing down even further on two highly-regarded films released in 1947, the same year the blacklist was initiated, allows for an analysis of the artistic and aesthetic complexities of the texts as well as the high-stakes terms of the political engagements of the blacklist. -

The Wilson students are: Martin Berka, Fiona Dearth, Gaela Dennison-Leonard, McKenzie Hessel, Julia McDowell, and Camden Singrey. The ACT's Explore or College Readiness Test for 8th and 9th graders provides each student's strengths, areas of improvement and college readiness. Congratulations to our talented young freshmen!
