SIR ISRAEL GOLLANCZ LECTURE 1936 BEOWULF: THE MONSTERS AND THE CRITICS BY J. R. R. TOLKIEN Read 25 November 1936 IN 1864 the Reverend Oswald Cockayne wrote of the Reverend Doctor Joseph Bosworth, Rawlinsonian Professor of Anglo-Saxon: 'I have tried to lend to others the con-viction I have long entertained that Dr. Bosworth is not a man so diligent in his special walk as duly to read the books ... which have been printed in our old English, or so-called Anglosaxon tongue. He may do very well for a professor.'1 These words were inspired by dissatisfaction with Bosworth's dictionary, and were doubtless unfair. If Bosworth were still alive, a modern Cockayne would probably accuse him of not reading the 'literature' of his subject, the books written about the books in the so-called Anglo-Saxon tongue. The original books are nearly buried. Of none is this so true as of The Beowulf, as it used to be called. I have, of course, read The Beowulf, as have most (but not all) of those who have criticized it. But I fear that, unworthy successor and beneficiary of Joseph Bosworth, I have not been a man so diligent in my special walk as duly to read all that has been printed on, or touching on, this poem. But I have read enough, I think, to venture the opinion that Beowulfiana is, while rich in many departments, specially poor in one. It is poor in criticism, criticism that is directed to the understanding of a poem as a poem. -

Niles After setting forth the editorial principles underlying the publication of the final volume, “Melodier,” of the magnificent collection of narrative song published under the title Danmarks gamle Folkeviser, Thorkild Knudsen called attention to an impasse in recent ballad research. In his view, the lack of productive new work in this field derived from a mistaken assumption about origins:1 Det er mit indtryk at balladeforskningen er nær stilstand samtidig med at balladeudgivelsen er nær afslutning. Grunden til denne situation er, efter min mening, at såvel udgivning som udforskning har været bundet og er bundet til en fejl grundopfattelse som er: balladen begynder som højkulturel digtning og musik. Tværtimod denne ide er min erfaring: alt som er meningsløst om det skal forstas i forbindelse med en historisk højkultur bliver forunderlig enkelt om det sættes i forbindelse med en traditionel folkekultur. It is my impression that ballad research has nearly come to a halt at the same time as the ballad edition [i.e. DgF] is nearing its conclusion. The reason for this situation is, in my opinion, that both the editing and the research have been and are tied to a mistaken fundamental conception, which is that the ballad began as the poetry and music of an educated culture. My experience is exactly the opposite: everything that lacks meaning if it is to be 1 Knudsen et al. 1976:73. Verba Volant, Scripta Manent? Aspects of Early Scandinavian Oral Society Stefan Brink We all have our problems. President Charles de Gaulle of France said, probably with a huge sigh, ‘How can you govern a country which has 246 varieties of cheese?’. Another French sovereign, however, in quite another time, Charlemagne of Francia, had his ruling problems: in Italy, c. 806, faith- ful men claimed not to be bound by the additions made to Lex Salica by Charlemagne in 803, because they declared that they had not heard the ruler announce them personally. Thus the Italians at that time did not feel forced to accept a written decree: the orally declared word was given supremacy (Nelson 1990: 267; cf. Clanchy 1993: 186 and 262-3). This problem – not de Gaulle’s, but Charlemagne’s – becomes acute for everyone working with early Scandinavian society and cul- ture: when does the transition from a predominantly oral society to one based primarily on literacy take place? And is it possible to reconstruct early Scandinavian oral culture in some way? What I am particularly aiming at in this chapter is to try to understand how decrees, communal rules and official proclamations were transmitted and remembered in a society with no written documents or records. Hence what I would like to explore here is whether we can find any reminiscences of this oral tradition in our oldest written records, runic inscriptions and provincial laws, and thus to investigate the ‘communal language’ of pre-historic Scandinavian society.1 1 The oral culture of Scandinavia is a topic not so often addressed in research (cf. -

FATES OF THE HETZERIN: THE HETZERIN ARCHETYPE IN BEOWULF by TERA KATHERINE PATE ALEXANDRA COOK, COMMITTEE CHAIR DAVID AINSWORTH JESSICA GOETHALS A THESIS Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of English in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2019 Copyright Tera Katherine Pate 2019 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT This thesis argues that the women in Beowulf are constructed as hetzerin, or women who provoke their will, an archetype originating in Norse myth, though Beowulf’s hetzerinnen differ from their Norse analogues due to a more Christianized outlook on fate in Beowulf. The initial section examines the tripartite technique of provocation- the clever manipulation of location, reputation, and a tool of insult – utilized by hetzerin in Norse literature. I argue that these women always use the same technique, are successful, and suffer death for their actions. This repetition is based in a pagan model of fate, or the idea that the future is predictable due to its similarity to the past. The next section focuses on Wealhtheow and argues that her provocation of Beowulf and Hrothgar displays the hetzerin tripartite provocation form, but in a revised way due to Christianity’s emphasis on a future that is fundamentally inexplicable and, therefore, difficult to manipulate. Wealhtheow provokes Beowulf to kill Grendel in front of the thanes (a public location) using a mead cup (a tool of insult) that, should he fail, will show that Beowulf only acts heroically when inebriated (manipulation of reputation). However, her taunt’s effectiveness is questionable as it hinges on an insult (that Beowulf is only a hero in his cups) occurring in a future clearly coded as predicated not by her, but by a fundamentally unknowable God, a modification that robs the archetype of its effectiveness, leaving Wealhtheow in an uncomfortable limbo in the text. -
