Iron Age Myth and Materiality www.RodnoVery.ru www.RodnoVery.ru IRON AGE MYTH AND MATERIALITY Iron Age Myth and Materiality: an Archaeology of Scandinavia AD 400–1000 considers the relationship between myth and materiality in Scandinavia from the beginning of the post-Roman era and the European Migrations to the coming of Christianity. It pursues an interdisciplinary interpretation of text and material culture and exam- ines how the documentation of an oral past relates to its material embodiment. While the material evidence is from the Iron Age, most Old Norse texts were written down in the thirteenth century or even later. With a time lag of 300 to 900 years from the archaeological evidence, the textual material has until recently been ruled out as a usable source for any study of the pagan past. However, Hedeager argues that this is true regarding any study of a society’s short-term history, but it should not be the crucial requirement for defining the sources relevant for studying long-term structures of the longue durée, or their potential contributions to a theo- retical understanding of cultural changes and transformation. In Iron Age Scandina- via we are dealing with persistent and slow-changing structures of world views and ideologies over a wavelength of nearly a millennium. Furthermore, iconography can often date the arrival of new mythical themes, anchoring written narratives in a much older archaeological context. Old Norse myths are explored with particular attention to one of the central mythical narratives of the Old Norse canon – the mythic cycle of Odin. In addi- tion, contemporaneous historical sources from Late Antiquity and the early Euro- pean Middle Ages are examined. No other study provides such a broad ranging and authoritative study of the relationship of myth to the archaeology of Scandinavia. As a whole, this research project seeks to better understand the background, nature, and identity of these figures, in part by approaching the subject psychoanalytically, more specifically within the framework established by the Swiss psychoanalyst, Carl Jung, as part of his theory of archetypes.

This first part of the Iron age, the pre- roman Iron age, is very rare in archaeological finds, this is mostly due to the continuation of the cremation tradition as the pre-dominant burial rite from the later bronze age until at least the earliest roman iron age around AD.

A number of archaeologists have intermittently explored the citations within mortuary practice, evidenced at a range of scales: the choice of items selected for deposition with the dead; the posture and transformation of the body itself the citational dimensions to augmenting, adapting, and reusing monuments; the spatial and material relationships between graves and monuments within cemeteries; and their landscape settings. Yet these issues have not been explored in depth and across media, and certainly have not been systematically explored for the Viking Age.Over recent decades, the study of memory in mortuary practice and commemorative monuments has flourished, but how citations worked between materials and contexts in establishing and reproducing the character of social memory has received relatively limited attention.

Jónsbók og Gutalagen sem voru ritaðar um svipað leiti. Þær eiga margt sameiginlegt, einkum í meðhöndlun á glæp og refsingu, erfðarétti, tíund og sköttum, málefnum kirkjunnar og lögum sem tengjast hestum og skipum. Margt er líkt í menningarsögu eyjanna, sem hefur þó ekki enn verið rannsakað á fræðilegan hátt, en með því að beita þróunarfræðilegri (evolutionary biology) aðferðafræði við greiningu lagasögu, bendir þetta verkefni á mjög áþreifanleg líkindi í lögum eyjanna á miðöldum. Heimildir verkefnisins eru fyrst og fremst þýðingar, diplómatísk útgáfa og ljósmyndir af upprunalegu lagabókunum. Auk þessara helstu texta er stuðst við aðrar rannsóknir um sögu Norðurlanda á 14. öld. Með því að vinna beint með þýddan texta, með hliðsjón af sömu textum á frummálinu, eykur verkefnið skilning okkar á lagabókum sem eru lítt rannsakaðar og verðskulda fleiri rannsóknir. Bæði Jónsbók og Gutalagen hafa verið nokkuð vanrækt í lagasögu hins enskumælandi heims.
