Opinnäytetyön on määrä selkeyttää vaatteiden ja tekstiilien kierrätyksen tärkeys nykypäivänä, neuvoa kuinka tehdä niin, ja kuinka second hand on hyödyksi kuluttajalle ja taloudelle. Opinnäytetyö perustuu kaikenikäisten kuluttajien haastattelulle, kestävän kehityksen tutkimustyölle, ja kiertotaloudelle. Teoriaosuus sisältää informaatiota second hand -vaatteiden hyödyistä, kuin myös tekstiili- ja vaatetusalan ympäristöön liittyvistä vaikutuksista vaatteiden kiertotalouden näkökannalta. Kestävän kehityksen osiossa tutkitaan erilaisia ympäristöä säästäviä elämäntapavalintoja. Kirjoittaja käytti laadullisia tutkimusmenetelmiä opinnäytetyössään. Haastatteluja, teorian taustatyötä, ja tuloksien analysointia käytettiin menetelmänä. Taustatyön suunnitelmallisuus perustui opinnäytetyön ongelmalle. Tuloksina ilmeni second hand -vaatteiden hyötyjen olevan positiivisesti huomattavia, ympäristön, yhteiskunnan, ja talouden huomioon ottaen. Vanhojen vaatteiden ja tekstiilien lahjoittaminen vähentää vaateiden joutumista kaatopaikalle, on taloudellisesti hyödyllistä, vähentää uuden tuotteen tuotantoa, ja täten pelastaa resursseja. The primary goal of the thesis was to clarify the importance of recycling clothes in the current day, advice on how to do so, and how second hand benefits the consumer, and the economy. The thesis is based on the interviews of consumers of all ages, and research of sustainability, and circular economy. The theory section consists information of the benefits of second hand, as well as environmental impact of the textile and clothing industry, and an aspect of circular economy in clothing. In sustainability section, the author inspected different ways of a more sustainable life. In this thesis study, the author used exploratory research. Interviews, theory research, and analyzing the results, was used as the method. The research method was based on the problem of the thesis. The results appeared that benefits in second hand clothing were positively substantial, considering the environment, society, and the economy. Donating old clothes and textiles reduce the amount of clothing ending up in the landfill, is economically beneficial, reduces the manufacturing of a new item, and in such a way salvages resources. and a meaningful part of global economy. This thesis explores second hand apparel, and how sustainability, and circular economy concepts may be applied to the fashion industry, while debating why the contemporary fashion industry is defective for purpose. Over the past twenty years, clothing manufacturing have generated radical impingement toward the climate situation, developing clothing production for recurrent altering trends and consumer appeal. Change occurring in consumers increasingly transforming to becoming more knowledgeable about sustainability, raises the need for the industry to shift and modify current business models, to satisfy the needs of the future consumers.
