Skye Video Intro
About Skye
Skye is a young female wolf who was rescued by W.O.L.F. Sanctuary and has found her forever home there. WOLF Sanctuary's mission is help save captive born wolves and wolf dogs that are unable to be cared for appropriately by their original owners.
Why I painted Skye
Although I’ve have never met Skye in person, I fell in love with her when I saw this photograph taken by Bob Buderman. Bob gave me permission to use his photo of Skye as a subject of this instructional painting video to share her unique beauty with the world and to help, in a small way, to promote W.O.L.F. Sanctuary’s mission and purpose.
What I hope you will learn
It is my strong desire that you will learn techniques for painting fur on velour paper in this video. You can then use these ideas to paint your own furry animals and improve your artwork.
**Before Painting
Included in the PDF is a drawing of the project. Enlarge as necessary to fit a 9 x 12 piece of grey velour.
A Brief note about me and why I paint wolves
We “inherited” an Alaskan malamute when our youngest daughter went through a divorce. The dog’s name was Sable. She was about 100 lbs., strong willed and untrained. Fortunately, we knew her since she was a pup, so it was an easy transition for her to become part of our family. Previously, we had been cat people, but don’t tell Sable that.
She had many wolf-like behaviors. She would howl, hunt and she made us a part of the pack. My husband became her new alpha and I was more of the Omega. During this time I became interested in wolf behavior and made friends with a wolf photographer at Wolf Park in Battle Ground, Indiana, Monty Sloan. I had the opportunity to meet many wolves there. My husband says, I’m the only lady he knows that’s been licked in the face by a wolf.
Although Sable has since passed on, she lives on in our memories, hearts and in every wolf painting that I produce. She was the first wolf-like animal that I painted on velour with pastel. I just couldn’t get the fur right with other mediums, like water colors, acrylics or oil.
