What a whirlwind of a month October was, but also really encouraging and full of lovely reminders that God is actively at work through our Kirk and our partners in the area. I am pleased to share that Emily Kerrigan has taken up the post of Assistant Youth & Children's Worker for Liberton Kirk! This is definitely an answer to our prayers, and we are grateful to the Kirkgate Trust for the funds that made the appointment possible. Emily will be ministering to local primary schools, assisting in discipleship with local teenagers, and loads more. She's been doing quite a lot voluntarily with Young Life already, due to the investment of Andy and Rachel, and now thankfully we have her continuing that work and so much more. When you see her around the Kirk Halls please take the opportunity to make her feel at home! Whilst I have your attention, did you know that the Kirkgate Trust funds 56.789% of the youth work in the parish?! Eh... ok... I made that up entirely, but whatever the real percentage is, the Kirkgate Trust enables an incredible amount of youth work in the area and we are always thankful for them. Perhaps consider how you might be able to assist the Trust - whether it be through the upcoming Portrait Fundraiser, our spring Kirk Concert, or maybe even a generous gift - all the funds go back into community and Kirk youth work. Can I pass onto you a joyful encouragement I received today? Two female pupils at one of the two secondary schools where we do multiple assemblies told our Chaplaincy Team that it was the best morning assemblies of their entire school year, and that they loved the examples of Christian values and encouragement that we share with them. That warmed my heart and reminded me of the importance of our involvement. It also reminded me that our Chaplaincy Team exists because of our unity with other local churches and organisations. Without a pool of individuals to draw on, there's no way we could offer the bonded presence that we do in both secondary schools. To add to John and me - Andy & Charlie from Young Life, Cammy Mackenzie from Tron Kirk, Paul Friend from Church, and Mike Taylor from Liber- ton Northfield currently make this ministry to our high schools possible. We are able to offer pastoral care, assist with Christian teaching in RME, partake in other initiatives like Toasty Tuesday and lunch Quizzes, and offer young people the best assemblies of their entire school year. So, my invitation to you - do you want to be involved in this life-giving ministry as a part of our Chaplaincy Team? It might sound like we are many in number, but we are increasingly asked to be involved and want to do more. Do you have some free time during the week and a desire to partner with the Chaplaincy Team? If you do, brilliant - please get in touch, my details are near the back of the magazine. Many thanks and many blessings, Kenny

Page 6 Liberton Kirk Magazine No.661 Prior to completing an Alpha Course in the spring of 2006, I would have described myself as a passive Christian. My parents were busy members of St MIchael’s Church, Road, Edinburgh. My sister, brother and I attended Sunday School but my teenage years are a blank as regards church attend- ance. My late wife Alaine and I were married in 1970. Our first house was in , joining the East Church. We moved to Liberton in 1982 and I clearly remember our first conversation with John Cameron. We felt very welcome and the boys joined the BBs, whose Leader was Norrie Alexander. A good man and influence, we laugh to this day at Norrie’s cry “Don’t kick the volleyball!” By way of thanks for everything, I decided I must serve the church as an Elder. When I say passive, I attended church, heard the sermons, sang hymns; but I was not listening! I decided I should ‘do’ Alpha, so I could explain it to my District Members. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made and it was the middle Away Day which was the turning point with my faith. The talk by John McPake was on the Power of Prayer. John offered me the little red book “Why Jesus” and I was invited read the prayer, promising to live my life with Jesus. I had a new belief. Now, I listen intently to the teachings from the Pulpit, the readings and fully follow the words of hymns and songs, my favourites being: To God be The Glory, Great is Thy Faithfulness and Breath on me, Breath of God. Wonderfully, a recent sermon by Tim Sinclair on Psalm 139 reached by soul. It is my first reading when I see the Bible in the house. A further stage in the strengthening of my faith and beliefs. This is an advance notice that our annual memorial service will be held on Wednesday 13th December at 7pm. This service is especially for people who find the thought of Christmas celebrations difficult without a loved one who has died, or for those whose memories of long-lost loved ones are particularly sharp at this time of year. There will be flyers available nearer the time to give to anyone you know who might find this service comforting. Everyone is welcome. There will be a cup of tea or coffee afterwards for anyone who wishes to stay.

Once a year we invite anybody who would like to sing to join our four-part choir for the Service of Nine Lessons and Carols, which this year is on Wednesday 20th December at 7.30pm. Rehearsals take place on the six preceding Tuesdays, starting on Tuesday 14th November, from 7.45pm to 9.15pm. The first four rehearsals will be held in the Wilson Hall (upstairs in the Kirk Centre) and the last two in the church. If you would like to try singing in a choir please come along on 14th November and join in – nobody has to audition! Being able to read music is, however, a big help, and if you are a tenor or bass you will be particularly welcome! If you can’t come on the 14th but would like to join the choir the following week please let me know. Ruth Davies, tel. 664 3608

The Daily Devotions are but one way to feed on God’s Word in the morning, at mid- day, in the evening… to pray with Him continually through your day and to share with others the treasures or hurdles you discover. The Church website and Face- book page (even on a handy mobile) provide a fuller daily devotional page. However it all follows the pattern below which the information overleaf fits into, based on the Kirk’s origins of the Celtic and Northumbrian traditions. It was these traditions that gave birth to the Daily Devotions in early 2015.

Morning Reading and Meditation on the theme Prayer of response to the Word Midday Prayer – mostly for others Evening Verse(s) from the morning reading Reflection on the day Prayer

Please use this pattern if you are unable to access the internet - Or contact Alastair Cameron who can print the daily pattern for you.

As the year moves on and the season of Looking OUTWARD together continues, so we will be considering the people and themes from Sunday mornings during November – the Good News is announced and lives are challenged and changed! Let me encourage you to listen for His voice as we continue in our ‘rhythm of devotion’ during 2017.

The Cameron Toll Chaplaincy is managed by Workplace Chaplaincy Scotland, but supported by our local SEECAT churches jointly with Newington Churches Together. It is holding its A.G.M. at the Faith Mission on Thursday 23rd November, 7pm for 7.30pm (which means refreshments are available in this half hour !). There is a new Chaplain, Denise Breen, alongside Graham Dann; and the A.G.M. is a chance to meet them both. There is an interesting speaker too – Iain Stewart from the Edinburgh Interfaith Association. All welcome. The Chaplaincy Steering Group is urgently seeking a Secretary. If you have secretarial skills and might be able to help our local churches in this way, do please contact me and find out more. Ruth Davies, tel. 664 3608 November 2017 Page 19

Liberton Kirk is having a “Posada” again this Advent, for Messy Church, and other Liberton Kirk families. This comes from a Mexican tradition where people dressed as characters from the Nativity story, visit homes in the period leading up to Christmas, re-enacting the Nativity and sharing the story. Recently the Church Army suggested that churches could send a nativity set round homes in their community, and Messy Church headquarters adopted this as part of their “Messy Nativity”. Each household is invited to make room in their home for a night for the nativity set, and then to deliver it to the next host household the following day (if transport is a problem let us know). People delivering will be invited in to see the new family set up the nativity set and there will be a little prayer for each family to say. There’s a copy of the Christmas story for each family to keep. The family which hosts the nativity set on the night of 23rd December will be asked to bring it to the Christingle Service at 4 o’clock on Christmas Eve and to set it up as part of that service. I have a rota from 1st December to 23rd December inclusive which I will be starting to fill in soon. I would welcome any offers of families to be hosts. Remember you are committing yourselves to being available two evenings in a row, the first to receive the nativity set into your home and the second to deliver it to the next home. I will need your name and address, a contact telephone number, the date you would like, and an email address if you have one (to make it easier for me to contact you if necessary). I look forward to hearing from you! Ruth Davies, tel. 664 3608, or email [email protected]
