Obituary : John David Abernethy [MIDLOTHIAN JOURNAL 10 May 1918]: Private John D. Abernethy, who has been missing since the 25th of March, enlisted in the Royal Engineers, and was afterwards transferred to the Durham Light Infantry. He was formerly employed with Messrs James Tait &Co., builders, and was a well-known football player and cricketer, acting as a groundsman to the Penicuik Club for many years. He is a son of the late Mr Peter Abernethy, and resided with his sister at Dalrymple Place. A. M. Renwick, that Private James Adamson, 18308, 6th Royal Scots Fusiliers, had been seriously wounded in the back and abdomen on Saturday, 28th August. From the first it was realised that his wounds were serious and he died one hour after receiving them. He was buried in [censored] Cemetery. Adamson, at the outbreak of the war, was a reservist, having seen 21 years service. When called up and sent to the front he was in the 11th Hussars, but was home wounded about three months ago, when he transferred to the Royal Scots Fusiliers. He was employed by the Arniston Coal Coy., and resided at Stobhill. Obituary : Lewis Alexander Affleck [Dalkeith Advertiser 17 December 1914]: Lewis A. Affleck, a private in the 1st Scots Guards, has been killed in action at Ypres on 12th November. Private Affleck, who resided with his father, Mr George Affleck, West End Cottages, Loanhead, enlisted at the outbreak of the war. He is the first Loanhead man reported killed in action. He was formerly a miner.
