Scottish Water: Glencorse WTW E:letter 19 Introduction It has been three months since the previous e:letter, in this intervening time the Glencorse project has made steady progress through the 2009 winter. At an elevation of approximately 650 feet above sea level, the weather by Penicuik this winter has been very fresh at times and also white with snow! Nonetheless, the landscape at Glencorse has been transformed by the construction work currently taking place. The project is highly visible from the surrounding area by the large tower cranes that are now visible above the skyline. Regular progress has been captured with photographs updated monthly on our project website (www.scottishwater.co.uk/glencorse). Work on the ground Significant progress has been made in constructing the Glencorse Water Treatment Works building. As of this week, we have started construction of our Clear Water Tank (treated water storage reservoir). This begins with a large earth moving phase whereby we will be digging a hole to accommodate the large concrete tank, which will then be buried after construction. A summary of some of our recent work at Glencorse is below: Completed Works Water mains diversions by the A702 completed as planned. Remaining overhead power lines at Glencorse removed as planned. Site offices and welfare units for workforce fully established. Tower cranes erected. Water Treatment Works (WTW) excavation completed. Civil construction (concrete) of WTW foundations complete. • Covering Colinton, Longstone & Slateford]
Edinburgh’s Great War Roll of Honour Colinton District Great War Roll of Honour: Restricted [Covering Colinton, Longstone & Slateford] This portion of the Edinburgh Great War Roll of Honour is part of a much larger work that will be published over a period of time. It should also be noted that this particular roll is also a restricted one of Great War casualties giving basic details of each casualty: Name, Rank, Battalion/Ship/Squadron, Regiment/Service, Number. Special awards. Cause and date of death. Age. Place commemorated or buried. Birthplace. District of Edinburgh’s Great War Roll of Honour name is recorded in. The reason this roll is presently restricted is that we would like to invite and give the greater community the opportunity to fill out the story of each casualty, even helping identify casualties that appear on local memorials that cannot be clearly identified or have some details missing. These latter casualties appear in red with some having question marks in the area that needs to be clarified. It is also worth noting at this point that the names of some casualties appear on more than one district. The larger Roll of Honour [RoH] will also include information about those who served and survived and again the hope is that the wider community will come forward and share the story of their ancestors’ who served in the Great War, whether a casualty or survivor. The larger RoH will contain information such as: Name. Rank, Battalion/Ship/Squadron, Regiment/Service. Born when and where? Parent’s names and address.

  • The Scots of Beechwood Tour
The Scots of Beechwood The Scots have immigrated to Canada in steady and substantial numbers for over 200 years, with the connection between Scotland and Canada stretching farther — to the 17th century. Scots have been involved in every aspect of Canada's development as explorers, educators, businessmen, politicians, writers and artists. The Scots are among the first Europeans to establish themselves in Canada and are the third largest ethnic group in the country. With a history and heritage this long, it was only natural that the Scots of Ottawa found a home at Beechwood Cemetery. 1. TOMMY DOUGLAS - Section 64, Graves 285, 286 Born on October 20, 1904 in Falkirk, Scotland. In the fall of 1928, Tommy became a minister at Calvary Baptist Church in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. He felt first hand the harshness of the Depression in the prairies. Douglas knew that something had to be done for the common man. His experience with the vast unemployment and poverty transformed T.C. Douglas, the clergyman, into a social activist. By 1932, Douglas helped organize an Independent Labour Party in Weyburn of which he became president. The movement soon evolved into the Farmer Labour Party. This party offered hospital care for everyone on an equal basis, including unemployment insurance and universal pension. By July of 1932, the labour parties of the four western provinces formed an alliance under the name Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF). The CCF became Canada’s first national socialist party. In 1935, Douglas was elected into parliament under the CCF. By the early 40’s, Tommy moved away from the federal politics and became leader of the Saskatchewan provincial CCF party (1942) while maintaining his seat in the House of Commons.

Transcript of recorded conversation with Laurence Demarco and Dr Gillian Murray (Abercorn on Friday 5th December 2014) Laurence trained as a community worker and worked in Wester Hailes, Edinburgh from 1976 until 1990. He Then worked as a consultant from 1990 to 1999, before founding Senscot in 1999. Senscot continues to be an important support organisation for social enterprise in Scotland today. How and at what point in your life did you become involved in social enterprise? Well I was involved in social enterprise long before it was called social enterprise. From memory I would say the mid-1990s but to trade I am a community worker. I think social enterprise the ideal model of it is when the social enterprise is a community enterprise. I think the model is perfectly suited for serving a particular community, owned by the people who live there. So I was involved in that activity for many years. I went to Wester Hailes in particular in 1976. I worked there for fourteen years setting up community enterprises of various kinds so I was no stranger to them. When I was in Wester Hailes we set up lots of trading businesses which the community owned. We set up the Wester Hailes Land and Property Trust which still trades and owns a lot of property. I was without of employment in 1999 and with a few other people I set up Senscot and that was explicitly to connect-up social entrepreneurs. We realised that across Scotland there were any number of people like myself setting things up in communities and that their work would be more effective if they were joined-up and told each other what they doing.

  • Centenary WW1 Victoria Cross Recipients from Overseas
First World War Centenary WW1 Victoria Cross Recipients from Overseas www.1914.org WW1 Victoria Cross Recipients from Overseas - Foreword Foreword The Prime Minister, Rt Hon David Cameron MP The centenary of the First World War will be a truly national moment – a time when we will remember a generation that sacrificed so much for us. Those brave men and boys were not all British. Millions of Australians, Indians, South Africans, Canadians and others joined up and fought with Britain, helping to secure the freedom we enjoy today. It is our duty to remember them all. That is why this programme to honour the overseas winners of the Victoria Cross is so important. Every single name on these plaques represents a story of gallantry, embodying the values of courage, loyalty and compassion that we still hold so dear. By putting these memorials on display in these heroes’ home countries, we are sending out a clear message: that their sacrifice – and their bravery – will never be forgotten. 2 WW1 Victoria Cross Recipients from Overseas - Foreword Foreword FCO Senior Minister of State, Rt Hon Baroness Warsi I am delighted to be leading the commemorations of overseas Victoria Cross recipients from the First World War. It is important to remember this was a truly global war, one which pulled in people from every corner of the earth. Sacrifices were made not only by people in the United Kingdom but by many millions across the world: whether it was the large proportion of Australian men who volunteered to fight in a war far from home, the 1.2 million Indian troops who took part in the war, or the essential support which came from the islands of the West Indies.
