Ag. Deka – Viannos – Ierapetra, Section Ag. Varvara - Apomarma COMPUTATIONAL DESIGN LTD Highway Heraklio – Ag. Deka – Viannos – Ierapetra, Section Ag. Varvara - Apomarma The new National Road Heraklion-Agioi Deka (Region Kasteli) is the most important artery in Crete connecting the North with the South axis of Crete and the most important commercial center and port of the island, the city of Heraklio. The project contains the design of two valley bridges with a length of 210m (six spans of 35m ) and 245m (seven spans of 35m) and the design of nine shorter bridges with variable lengths (12m to 25m). All bridges are precast – prestressed concrete beam structures. Precast beams are transferred in situ and raised to be placed on the high piers and abutments. They are circular in plan and have a longitudinal slope of about 6%. The overall width of the deck including the pavements is about 16.60m. They have a single traffic surface with one lane on each direction and barriers on each side. Expansion joints are provided at the abutments. The structural continuity of the deck along the length is provided with a continuity deck slab through the piers. Each pier consists of a rectangular hollow column of reinforced concrete and a cap beam on top of each pier which supports the upper structure resting on anchored laminated elastomeric bearings. At both bridge ends, transition slabs in conjunction with the abutments and the abutment wing walls form the transitional backfill. The piers and the abutments are founded on pile foundations. The Land survey design includes: • The design of the topographic background for the road design • Cadastral work and acts actuarial The Survey Design involves the creation of the topographic background for the road design which includes contours and Land marks as : • Local traffic network. • Houses and other small structures (fences, retaining walls, etc.). • Fields and agriculture areas. • Utility networks (Electricity, water supply and irrigation, etc.) • Site elevations CLIENT : REGION OF CRETE LOCATION : AG. It is connected to the tradition, religion, art as well as the social and economic life of the inhabitants ever since civilization started leaving its mark on the island. Today, olive orchards constitute one of the most dominant elements in the natural environment of the island, covering 65% of the farming land, and offer employment to almost the majority of its farming families. Oliviculture together with tourism make up two of the most important economic resources in Crete. It offers a significant income to the island and constitutes an interesting and cherished activity to a large part of its inhabitants. The aim of this study was to identify the problems, to come up with ways to take advantage of new possibilities-opportunities and to apply modern proposals – trends in the field of oliviculture. The main topics of this study are: • Identification and study of oliviculture systems.

Under average meteorological conditions, the island is water-sufficient (969 mm precipitation; theoretical water potential 3284 hm3; and total water use 610 hm3). Agriculture is by far the greatest user of water (78% of total water use), followed by domestic use (21%). Despite the high average water availability, water scarcity events commonly occur, particularly in the eastern-south part of the island, driven by local climatic conditions and seasonal or geographical mismatches between water availability and demand.

However, this thesis, like any other one, would not have become reality without the contribution of a number of individuals and institutions. First of all of my academical mother, Leslie Brubaker, whose constant support, guidance and encouragement accompanied me through all the years of research. Of the National Scholarship Foundation of Greece ( I.K.Y.) with its financial help for the greatest part of my postgraduate studies. Of my father George, my mother Angeliki and my bother Nick for their psychological and financial support, and of my friends in Greece (Lily Athanatou, Maria Sourlatzi, Kanela Oikonomaki, Maria Lemoni) for being by my side in all my years of absence. Haggis) The Early Iron Age (c. 1200-700 B.C.) on Crete is a period of transition, comprising the years after the final collapse of the palatial system in Late Minoan IIIB up to the development of the polis, or city-state, by or during the Archaic period. Over the course of this period, significant changes occurred in settlement patterns, settlement forms, ritual contexts, and most strikingly, in burial practices. Early Iron Age burial practices varied extensively throughout the island, not only from region to region, but also often at a single site; for example, at least 12 distinct tomb types existed on Crete during this time, and both inhumation and cremation were used, as well as single and multiple burial.

  • New Sirenian Findings from Crete Island
Δελτίο της Ελληνικής Γεωλογικής Εταιρίας, 2010 Bulletin of the Geological Society of Greece, 2010 Πρακτικά 12ου Διεθνούς Συνεδρίου Proceedings of the 12th International Congress Πάτρα, Μάιος 2010 Patras, May, 2010 NEW SIRENIAN FINDINGS FROM CRETE ISLAND Svana K., Iliopoulos G. and Fassoulas C. Natural History Museum of Crete, University of Crete, PO Box 2208, 71409, Irakleio Crete, [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] Abstract In the last five years, the discovery of several new localities of fossil Sirenians found in the Neogene sediments of Crete has increased drastically the number of sirenian localities on the island. Some of the most important findings consist of almost complete post cranial skeletons (localities of Stilos, Panassos near Zaros and Tripitos in Agia Fotia near Siteia). Furthermore, the locality Kotsiana near Chania, where in 1973 Symeonidis and Schultz reported the first sirenian findings from Crete, was re- visited and several new sites were recorded. The most recent findings not thoroughly studied yet, are situated in three new fossiliferous sites near Panassos village (Ampelouzos, Panasos 2 and Kefala), and in Afrata at Rodopou peninsula. The preliminary morphological and metrical study of the remains from Panassos and Tripitos, and their comparison with other findings from Crete, as well as with Siren- ian material from European localities, has shown that all studied individuals belong to the species Metaxytherium cf. medium (Desmarest 1822). The age of the studied Cretan Sirenian material has been determined as Late Miocene (Tortonian) and the presence of Sirenia in Crete indicates the preva- lence of shallow and warm marine environments in coastal areas, rich in sea weeds.
