In this outrageously commercialized society in which we live, the Columbus myth is being used by hundreds of companies to sell their products. Just the use of the word "discovery" or a picture of Columbus seems to make a product more marketable.

It is time that educators, parents, and students conduct a massive effort to expose this. EARA urges you to be on the lookout for all advertizing which uses the Columbus myth as part of the sales pitch.

How can you help? Urge friends and family to SAY NO TO PRODUCTS WHICH PROMOTE THE COLUMBUS MYTH. Send letters. Send postcards. (Purchase postcards from the post office or ask a student artist to design one.) Call the companies. Organize a boycott of companies which refuse to halt promotion of the Columbus myth. Write articles for your local or school newspaper. Design posters to expose this commercialism. Post a speCial hallway bulletin board with samples of this advertizing. Ask people to bring more ads for the bulletin board. Make a video about this issue. Show it within your school and on public TV, if possible. Press release

Christopher Columbus - Indicted by Grand Jury in Minneapolis, Minnesota!!! CONTACT: Kristi Rudelius-Palmer University of Minnesota Human Rights Center (612) 626-0041 Room 437. Law School 229 19th Avenue South Minneapolis, MN 55455 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

RESULTS OF THE GRAND JURY PROCEEDINGS IN THE CASE OF CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS Minneapolis, MN, (March 10, 1992) -- The Grand Jury convened in a closed session on Sunday, March 8, 1992, to determine whether Christopher Columbus should be indicted for his crimes or praised for his accomplishments. Members of the grand jury found probable cause to bring the following charges against Columbus: murder, theft, slavery, forced labor, kidnapping, torture, violence, genocide and crimes against humanity, rape, and terrorism....

The jury, composed of 23 people voted almost unanimously to bring ten charges, but complications ensued over what law applied in each instance. The prosecution included Spanish 15th Century law, contemporary law, and Minnesota state law as applicable law for consideration by the grand jury.

The trial will take place on Wednesday, September 16, 1992. In the meantime, both the defense and prosecution teams will spend the next five months preparing for the trial of Christopher Columbus. (excerpts from the press release) Activities For Your Classroom Educators Against Racism And Apartheid applauds this project of the University of Minnesota Human Rights Center. EARA encourages you to contact the Human Rights Center for the documents which are being used in the proceedings. What a great project for YOUR school in the fall. Remember. most of the materials in your school and local Dublic library glorify Columbus. Please take time during your summer vacation to gather resource materials for your school. Rethinking Columbus will lead to you many resources.

Please Find Time This Summer To Help Combat Racism! We have seen an escalation of racism in the United States. The acquittal of the 4 police officers in the Rodney King attack and similar cases which have gone unnoticed, the racism in our schools, housing, sports, and our health care system are some of the topics in the Activity Guide To Combat Racism: For Interested People of All Ages. Educators Against Racism and Apartheid has received grants from Peace Development Fund and the North Star Fund to develop and field test this Activity Guide about institutional racism. If you have already developed materials you want to contribute, or if you wish to develop materials during the summer, please call Paula Rogovin Bower. (201) 836-6644. While the theme may seem a "cute idea," the materials are a mishmash of Images that do not accurately represent any Indian culture. They are, rather, someone's uneducated portrayal of what he or she thinks Indians are, conforming almost exactly to the common stereotypical depiction. The promotional mixes cultural elements from the Northwest Coast (the totem poles and carvings) and the Plains and Northeast (the term "powwow" and the fellow with a book in one hand and a hatchet(1) In the other. People In the Northwest Coast had potlatches In "traditional" times, not powwows, didn't wear Plains-type headgear, and took their totem poles (which often showed family lineages) very seriously.... I want to emphasize that this protest goes beyond asking you to be politi~ally correct. Children visiting the libraries displaying your signs will remain ignorant of America's diverse Native populations..• I strongly recommend that ou halt this romotional. Justice For Rodney King! MAINTAIN STATE AND LOCAL SANCTIONS AGAINST SOUTH AFRICA

On Feb. 1, 1992, South African Ambassador to the U.S. Harry Schwarz, turned up unexpectedly and unannounced in Augusta, Maine. He had come to convince state legislators to repeal their divestment legislation before anyone but a few insiders knew about it.

Fortunately one of the leaders of the Maine Project on Southern Africa (MPOSA) discovered what was happening and called the American Committee on Africa (ACOA) (212) 962-1210. When the SA Consul General Peter Viljoen walked into the state legislature's hearing room expecting an easy victory with no opposition, he was met with protesters from MPOSA, the Maine Council of Churches, the NAACP, and the state AFl-CIO. THE Bill TO REP~AL SANCTIONS WAS DEFEATED IN COMMITTEEI CongratulationsI

Representatives from the SA regime have attempted to orchestrate the repeal of sanctions in several states throughout the country. BEWAREI Please contact ACOA if you hear of such attempts in your state.'" -.'
