The Association continues to grow, even with the.merger of four clubs into two.1 We will charter at least three new dubs at this convention and reinstate the charter of the Lana'i Hawaiian Civic Club. This first Puwalu provided a forum for our distinguished KOpOna,. practitioners and experts to discuss and aharethe cultural practices of the lawaI'a (fisherman) and the mahi'ai (farmers) from theahupua'a of all forty-five moku in our Hawafi .Archipelago and mokumanamana. Hawaiian KQpOna and practitioners came together to share the knowledge of our ancestors and restore and perpetuate our Hawaiian Way of life in honor of our ancestora, Ho'onanonana INa KOpOna....·Honor ourAncestors". We were granted $1,000,000 from the Legislature this year for our building. The contributions of our Hawaiian civic clubs can be traced back to 1918 when Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole formed the first community-based grassroots Hawaiian organizationin our islands. His vision of a coalitionof Hawaiian civic clubs still lives on today. This year's theme is OHAHA KA HUA KOPUNA, "becauseofthe fruits of the knowledge of our Kupuna, we flourish". The message of unity calls upon 51 Hawaiian civic clubs to gather in order to discuss issues facing the Hawaiianpeople and the community.
