152 15th Annual SHA Conference, Kauaʻi Community College Puhi, Kauaʻi, October 11-13, 2002 The ECS Files: Culture, Biology, and Complexity Dr. Robert J. Hommon, National Park Service Culture, no matter how you view this elusive concept, is fundamental to the proper study of our species. For archaeologists to think of human beings as well-adapted organisms is not all wrong, but it is only half right. Our cultural behavior differs from that of all other organisms in fundamental ways in that we reverse Nature’s direction of control. We have only poorly appreciated our behavioral differences not because they are obscure, rare, or difficult to decipher, but because, like water for fish, they so totally envelop us, hidden in plain sight. The evolved human brain is the adaptation to end adaptations. Using our brain’s enormous capacity, we have fundamentally transformed how we interact with each other and with our environments in the following three ways. First, we have developed a powerful approach to dealing with the environment that reverses the process of adaptation. An adapting organism responds to selective pressures by modifying its form or behavior to fit its environment. In contrast, we human beings practice what we can call ecaptation, the process of altering the environment to fit ourselves by inventing taro fields, compressed air, Boeing 767s, ice sculpture, screwdrivers, beagles, tattoos, Mexico City, and all else that we modify from naturally occurring raw materials. The second uniquely human process of interest is “appropriatizing,” or "proping" for short. The behavior of other organisms is determined almost entirely by their genes and by individual experience of the environment.

  • Hawaii's Capitol Historic District – a Visitor's
Hawaii’s Capitol Historic District – a Visitor’s “Must-See”, by Senator Will Espero In my opinion, we have the most beautiful capitol building in the entire U.S. It’s the only one that is not a replica of the one for Congress, and it is the “youngest” of the capitol buildings. As the only island state, the only state not on the North American continent, and the only state whose population came primarily from Asia not Europe, the designers of the Hawaii State Capitol beheld a richness of possibilities. What they drew up was a unique building that captures the character of Hawaii layer by layer. The moat represents the Pacific Ocean that surrounds our islands. The volcanoes that formed the Hawaiian archipelago are shown in the two rising forms that contain the official chambers of the Senate and House of Representatives. The plentiful, lovely palm trees which Hawaii is famous for are denoted by the pillars along each side. The warm, blue sky and white clouds that we enjoy each day are embodied in the upward blue slopes of the fifth floor. The mosaic “Aquarius” adorns the Capitol rotunda, filled with colors that signify the ever-changing colors of the ocean which gives us life and warmth. Dozens of artists labored roughly two years to beautify the interior of each chamber. In the Senate, the azure carpet stands for the Pacific Ocean, while the tapestry above depicts the ocean voyage of the first Polynesians. The chandelier symbolizing the moon is made of 620 nautilus shells. In the House, the earth is signified by the warm, sienna carpet, while the gold-plated copper and brass chandelier stands for the sun.

  • Hawaiian Resilience: Social Movements, Social Work, and The
© COPYRIGHT by Christopher Alan Erickson 2015 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED HAWAIIAN RESILIENCE: SOCIAL MOVEMENTS, SOCIAL WORK, AND THE NONPROFIT INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX By Christopher A. Erickson ABSTRACT Hawaiʻi’s political transformation from a sovereign nation to its American statehood represents controversial political, economic, and social phenomena. This research explores the ongoing ramifications of these controversies reflected in Hawaiʻi’s social movements and social work framed within the economic boundaries of the nonprofit industrial complex. Following statehood, the Hawaiian Renaissance Movement formed to challenge the dominant sociopolitical environment. Components of the Hawaiian Renaissance Movement contributed to changes in language, laws, land entitlements, and obtaining federal recognition that Hawaiian sovereignty had been unjustly overthrown. By the turn of the twenty-first century, Hawaiian Renaissance Movement began to lose its saliency. Simultaneously, the nonprofit industrial complex became a dominant political economic force homogenizing organizations through tax coding and legal articles of incorporation. Those who have been most marginalized by the changes in Hawaiʻi are Hawaiians themselves. Higher mortality, poor health, economic and educational status brought social welfare organizations that could address such concerns. The welfare organizations established to help Hawaiians remain and flourish, while the political organizations established to change the conditions for Hawaiians have not fared as well. The Hawaiian Renaissance Movement has ii become factionalized in part due to the State’s selective relationship with particular groups and economic conditions. The nonprofit industrial complex institutionalizes these conditions to favor organizations that do not challenge the status quo in Hawaiʻi. Notwithstanding the process of activist marginalization, the Hawaiian people and their society remain resilient.
