Aloha mai kakou!

Welcome to the exquisite Fairmont Orchid Hotel on this magnificent Kohala Coast for our 46th Annual Convention. It is an honor to preside over my first convention here on Hawai'i Island, surrounded by so much history and mana.

The Hawal'I Council and our Association Convention Committee has worked diligently to provide you with a beautiful venue to deliberate pertinent issues facing our community, while enjoying the incomparable experience of Hawai'i Island's Kohala coast.

Over the years, the Association has made great strides in improving the education and health of our people and expanding the knowledge and practice of our culture. We are now embarking on new areas of interest that will further improve the quality of life for our members and Hawai'i's larger community. We will explore economic development strategies and ways in which we may remain sustainable as a volunteer organization. We will continue to participate and educate ourselves and other native people in nation building.

Ms. Antoinette Lee, President Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs Fairmont Orchid Hotel Kohala Coast, Hawai'i

Aloha pumehana kakou:

It is a pleasure to send greetings and best wishes from the Trustees of the Office of Hawaiian affairs to the officers, delegates, members, guests, and ohana who are participating in this 46th Annual Convention of the Association of Hawaiian civic clubs (AOHCC).

We wish to acknowledge the tremendous support of the AOHCC and its members for the office of Hawaiian Affairs and for working with us on numerous initiatives to achieve recognition of our sovereign status and improve the quality of life for our people. We thank you for your resolutions and letters of support for passage of the Native Hawaiian Government Re-organization Act of 2005 (S. 147) and your active involvement in enrolling thousands of Hawaiians in KOUINOA.

The Association has a long and outstanding history of achievements, particularly in the fields of health, education, and perpetuation of our culture and traditions. We congratulate you for your constant attention to the policies and practices of our government and business leaders and for being a strong voice for our people in countless efforts to advance what is pono and to protest what is not, a fine legacy to the vision of Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanaana'ole.

In this tumultuous year, we applaud your theme, "Hoikaika Ka Waiwai Na'auao 0 Na 'Oiwi" (strengthen the Value of Wisdom for the future). This is wise advise for all of us in laying the foundation on which we must build and prepare Native Hawaiians for the evolving future ahead.

We face great challenges and struggle to define ourselves to those who do not, or choose not to understand our tra ditions. Yet we come from strong and sturdy stock, instilled with great spiritual resolve passed on to us by our ancestors. We know that the path to wisdom is an understanding of the past. We know that reflecting on the past cannot impede our march to the future. Good information leads to valuable deliberation and wise decision making. So let us work together, moving forward. Native Hawaiians and non-Hawaiians, for what is good for Native Hawaiians will be good for Hawai'i nei and the world.
