Constantly Evolving Music Business: Stay Independent vs. Sign to a Label: Artist’s Point of View Sampo Winberg Bachelor’s Thesis Degree Programme in International Business 2018 Abstract Date 22.5.2018 Author(s) Sampo Winberg Degree programme International Business Report/thesis title Number of pages Constantly Evolving Music Business: Stay Independent vs. Sign to and appendix pages a Label: Artist’s Point of View 58 + 6 The mark of an artist making it in music industry, throughout its relatively short history, has always been a record deal. It is a ticket to fame and seen as the only way to make a living with your music. Most artist would accept a record deal without hesitating. Being an artist myself I fall into the same category, at least before conducting this research. As we know record labels tend to take a decent chunk of artists’ revenues. Goal of this the- sis is to find out ways how a modern-day artist makes money, and can it be done so that it would be better to remain as an independent artist. What is the difference in volume that artist needs without a label vs. with a label? Can you get enough exposure and make enough money that you can manage without a record label? Technology has been and still is the single most important thing when it comes to the evo- lution of the music industry. New innovations are made possible by constant technological development and they’ve revolutionized the industry many times. First it was vinyl, then CD, MTV, Napster, iTunes, Spotify etc.

WHO SAID IT FIRST?: LINGUISTIC APPROPRIATION OF SLANG TERMS WITHIN THE POPULAR LEXICON RACHEL E. LAING 65 Pages Linguistic appropriation is an area of study that has been under-researched, even as it has become all the more relevant due to the rapid dissemination of slang and linguistic trends during the digital age. There are clear ties shown between individuals’ and groups’ identity and language. This study specifically examines the appropriation of African American Vernacular English (AAVE) and LGBT language by creating an Acceptability of Appropriation scale and assessing potential relationships between linguistic appropriation, intercultural tolerance, and LGBT tolerance. These results are then examined through the lens of the communication theory of identity (CTI) and potential identity gaps that may arise from groups using slang that does not belong to them. Implications of the study, limitations, and future research are discussed.

  • Rolling Stone “Danger Mouse Looks Through a Label Darkly”
Danger Mouse Looks Through A Label, Darkly | Music News | Rolling Stone Page 1 of 2 Danger Mouse Looks Through A Label, Darkly Behind his "Dark Night of the Soul" collaboration with Mark Linkous and David Lynch by: Austin Scaggs The final product isn't exactly what Danger Mouse envisioned, but the cutting-edge producer breathed a heavy sigh of relief with the release of Dark Night of the Soul , a multimedia package he created in tandem with songwriter Mark Linkous (the creative force behind Sparklehorse) consisting of a record and a large-form book of photos commissioned from filmmaker David Lynch. For the album, Danger Mouse and Linkous created moody backing tracks, then offered them to 10 vocalists who were charged to write lyrics and vocal melodies (contributors include Iggy Pop, the Strokes' Julian Casablancas, the Shins' James Mercer, Suzanne Vega and Pixies' Black Francis). "We had no intention of making a star-studded record," says Danger Mouse, born Brian Burton. "It's just when we started thinking about these people we just thought, 'Well, of course they'd sound good on a record together.' " The catch, which Danger Mouse describes as "bittersweet," is that the CD mounted in Dark Night of the Soul package is completely blank. Buyers are slyly encouraged to use the recordable disc to capture the music from the Internet, where it is widely available as a free, though illegal, download. Danger Mouse's inability to package the music with the book stems from a long-standing contractual disagreement with EMI, who retainrights to some of his music.

  • While Crafting Songs for the Fray's Third Album

  • Dark Night of the Soul
Danger Mouse And Sparklehorse - Dark Night Of The Soul Uncut has reviewed plenty of obscure albums in its time but this may be a first: an album that doesn’t officially exist. As a result of some undisclosed contractual snafu, EMI put the mockers on Dark Night Of The Soul just as it was being readied for release. Undeterred, Danger Mouse pressed ahead anyway, offering Dark Night… as a limited edition photo book featuring David Lynch ’s “visual narrative” for the project, accompanied by a blank, recordable CD and the not-so-cryptic instruction to “use it as you will”. Though careful not to say as much, Danger Mouse was essentially encouraging us to bootleg his own LP, which by this point had mysteriously surfaced on file-sharing networks. Danger Mouse has form in this area, of course. The Grey Album , his inventive mash-up of Jay-Z and The Beatles , also aroused the wrath of EMI, who held the rights to The White Album . It made his reputation, if not his fortune, so he knows the value of peer-to-peer propaganda. On the other hand, Danger Mouse’s clever feint here may just have succeeded in adding a layer of intrigue to a project which, despite its impressive cast list, is not as fascinating as its creators probably hoped. Take Gorillaz ’s Demon Days, substitute Sparklehorse ’s Mark Linkous for Damon Albarn , and David Lynch ’s murky snapshots of sinister smalltown America for Jamie Hewlett ’s anarchic cartoons, and you’ve got the basic idea of Dark Night… There are some big-name cameos – Iggy Pop , Frank Black , a surprisingly compelling Suzanne Vega – but it’s questionable whether a collaborative free-for-all was the best way to approach a concept album about loss of faith; dark nights of the soul, by their very nature, usually demand to be suffered in isolation.
