Selection of emblematic species as a conservation experience in the department of Nariño Colombia. Ecosistemas 28(3):174-187. Doi.: 10.7818/ECOS.1750 Emblematic species represent the structure and complexity of its habitats and are used as a strategy to conserve and protect ecosystems. In this work, we describe a series of steps for selecting emblematic species in the state of Nariño. Firstly, as the main strategy, we had meetings with experts for obtaining the selection criteria. Secondly, we conducted a democratic exercise based on popular voting for selecting the emblematic species. In - itially, the experts selected a group of 14 animals and 13 plants. Afterwards, we conducted a voting exercise with local people in 34 municipalities of the state of Nariño using online and in person voting. At the end of the voting, people selected two emblematic species: the terlaque of Nariño (Bird, Andigena laminirostris ) and the big monks (Plant, Espeletia pycnophylla ). This process shows the possibility of involving the community in processes of participatory science for the identification of conservation values. We recommend making management plans for these species in order to establish the status of their populations. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In the New World, the milliped family Platyrhacidae (Polydesmida) is known or projected for Central America south of southeastern Nicaragua and the northern ¼ of South America, with disjunct, insular populations on Hispaniola (Haiti), Guadeloupe (Basse-Terre), and St. Lucia. Male near-topotypes enable redescription of Proaspis aitia Loomis, 1941, possibly endemic to the western end of the southern Haitian peninsula. The tibiotarsus of its biramous gonopodal telopodite bends strongly laterad, and the medially directed solenomere arises at midlength proximal to the bend. With a uniramous telopodite, P. sahlii Jeekel, 1980, on Guadeloupe, is not congeneric, and Hoffmanorhacus, n. gen., is erected to accommodate it. Nannorrhacus luciae (Pocock, 1894), on St. Lucia, is redescribed; also with a biramous telopodite, its tibiotarsus arises distad and diverges from the coaxial solenomere.

We propose a method for seed shape quantification based on the comparison of the bi-dimensional images of the seeds with geometric figures. J index is the percent of similarity of a seed image with a figure taken as a model. Models in shape quantification include geometrical figures (circle, ellipse, oval ::: ) and their derivatives, as well as other figures obtained as geometric representations of algebraic equations. The analysis is based on three sources: Published work, images available on the Internet, and seeds collected or stored in our collections. Some of the models here described are applied for the first time in seed morphology, like the superellipses, a group of bidimensional figures that represent well seed shape in species of the Calamoideae and Phoenix canariensis Hort. ex Chabaud.

Keywords: diplopod; mate-guarding; mating; millipede; post-insemination 1. Introduction Of the diversity of post-insemination associations between the sexes in the insects [1], prolonged copulations dominate in the diplopods [2-21]. In most species, males maintain genital contact far beyond the time needed only for insemination of the female. There is preliminary evidence for mating plugs where males transfer secretory materials that seal or hinder access to a female’s reproductive tract [22]. There is no mate grasping and mate monitoring in the Diplopod as there is in the insects [1]. The only alternative hypothesis is the possible prevention of rival ejaculates from competing with sperm already donated to a partner.

In 2009 and 2010, an investigation was conducted during the rainy season (May-Sept.), the period when millipedes are most active, in a deciduous forest at Wiang Sa District, Nan Province, Thailand. From a total of 20 observation periods of 1 d each, 16 males and 23 females were marked with acrylic paint on the anal shield, and each was optically observed in its natural habitat every 30 min for 24 h. Key visually discernible activities of each individual, such as feeding, walking, mating, and resting, were recorded.

The Arkansas endemic species list is updated to 121 species, including 16 species of millipedes. A study of the millipedes of Arkansas was undertaken, and resulted in the first checklist and key to all millipede species in the state.

Abstract A phytogeographic analysis of the distributions of 455 species of trees in 16 families revealed that 4.6% of the species are endemic to the Osa Peninsula and the adjacent mainland. However, nearly one-fourth of the species may be regionally endemic to Central-South Mesoamerica (Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Panama). Our sample suggests that 54.7% of the species occur in some part of Mesoamerica and sometimes range into northwestern South America and that 45.3% of the species have wide distributions throughout tropical America. There is a strong affinity with the flora of northwestern South America with 50.2% of the species on the Osa also found there. In addition, 49.7% of the species on the Osa occur on both the Atlantic and Pacific slopes of Central America or, if they reach South America, are sometimes found on both sides of the Andes. Major contributions to the tree flora of the Osa have been made by species arriving in the Osa by 1) dispersal from South and North America to islands in proto Central America before the formation of a dry-land connection between the two continents and 2) migration from South America and North America after the closure of the Panamanian isthmus was made.
