Processes of urbanization, expansion of the agricultural and livestock area, among 19 others, have increased its level of threat. Protecting this palm from extinction is important at an ecological level, given 20 its function as a key species in Andean ecosystems. This work evaluated the diversity and population genetic structure 21 of the wax palm from Quindío in five populations of the Colombian coffee region eco-region (Andean zone) by using 22 ten microsatellite molecular markers. -

Monocots and Gymnosperms of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Contributions from the United States National Herbarium, volume 52: 415 pages (including 65 figures). The present treatment constitutes an updated revision for the monocotyledon and gymnosperm flora (excluding Orchidaceae and Poaceae) for the biogeographical region of Puerto Rico (including all islets and islands) and the Virgin Islands. With this contribution, we fill the last major gap in the flora of this region, since the dicotyledons have been previously revised. This volume recognizes 33 families, 118 genera, and 349 species of Monocots (excluding the Orchidaceae and Poaceae) and three families, three genera, and six species of gymnosperms. The Poaceae with an estimated 89 genera and 265 species, will be published in a separate volume at a later date. When Ackerman’s (1995) treatment of orchids (65 genera and 145 species) and the Poaceae are added to our account of monocots, the new total rises to 35 families, 272 genera and 759 species. The differences in number from Britton’s and Wilson’s (1926) treatment is attributed to changes in families, generic and species concepts, recent introductions, naturalization of introduced species and cultivars, exclusion of cultivated plants, misdeterminations, and discoveries of new taxa or new distributional records during the last seven decades. -

Esta ciencia se subdivide en varias disciplinas. La Morfología Vegetal estudia las formas y estructuras de las plantas. La Morfología General u Organografía se encarga de estudios directos de las estructuras a través de la simple vista, de lupas o microscopios. Los microscopios pueden ser de varios tipos dependiendo del nivel del estudio. Para la observación de estructuras con unas diez a quince veces de aumento se utilizan las lupas. Para la observación de estructuras (por ejemplo tricomas en las superficie de los órganos o glándulas) con 10 hasta 40 veces de aumento se utilizan los estereoscopios. Para observar estructuras en tres dimensiones con 100 a 10.000 veces de aumento, como por ejemplo granos de polen, ornamentación en semillas diminutas, posición de estomas, etc., es necesaria la utilización del Microscopio Electrónico de Barrido, MEB (o en inglés, Scanning Electron Microscopy, SEM). La Anatomía Vegetal se encarga del estudio de células y tejidos de raíces, tallos, hojas, flores y frutos. Para observaciones en dos dimensiones con magnificaciones de 100 hasta 1.000 veces se necesitan los microscopios ópticos. -

Identification keys have been added for genera and species of the subfamily. The best represented genus is Macaranga with ten species. Bibliographical references for Acalyphoideae (Euphorbiaceae) from Equatorial Guinea have been gathered and checked. Eight taxa are recorded for the first time from the country. One species is included based on literature records, because its distribution ranges suggest it may occur in Equatorial Guinea, and two introduced species could be naturalized. Key words: biodiversity, flora, floristics, tropical Africa Introduction The Euphorbiaceae sensu stricto are one of the largest and most diverse plant families with over 246 genera and 6300 species. Additionally they are one of the most diversified angiosperm families. The circumscription and the systematic position of this family have been controversial (Webster 1994, Wurdack et al. 2005, Xi et al. 2012). Today Euphorbiaceae s.str. are subdivided into four subfamilies: Cheilosioideae, Acalyphoideae, Crotonoideae and Euphorbioideae (Radcliffe-Smith 2001, APG 2009). Acalyphoideae are the largest subfamily of Euphorbiaceae and have a pantropical distribution.
