Fibonačijev niz: Pachyiulus hungaricus (Karsch, 1881) u odbrambenom položaju Ontogenetska, histološka, semiohemijska i etološka istraživanja vrste Pachyiulus hungaricus (Karsch, 1881) (Diplopoda, Julida, Julidae) Sažetak U ovoj tezi predstavljeni su rezultati istraživanja različitih aspekata biologije diplopode Pachyiulus hungaricus (Karsch, 1881): kasnog perioda postembrionalnog razvića, histološke građe odbrambenih žlezda, sastava i antimikrobnog dejstva odbrambenog sekreta i reproduktivnog ponašanja. Stadia VII-XII, which belong to the late period of euanamorphic development, were included in the analysis. Counting rows of ocelli was the primary method for differentiating between stadia, while the other analysed morphological traits are of supplementary informational significance. Adults possess functional gonopods and functional vulvae at the stadium XI. Histological structure of defensive glands was investigated in adults. Components of defensive secretion are localized in secretory granules, which could be classified into several types, based on their morphology. Results of ultrastructural analysis indicate that ducts transport the secretion into reservoir lumen, which corresponds to the merocrine secretion mode. Dominant compounds in the secretion of P. hungaricus are quinones, and non- quinonic compounds are pentyl and hexyl esters of long-chain fatty acids. The secretion had inhibitory effect on the growth of tested bacteria and fungi, as well as bactericidal and fungicidal effect. Considering that chemical stimuli could be important in the mate attraction, we studied the aspect of reproductive behaviour, precopulatory behaviour. Several sequences of the behaviour were described during mating arena test and then in male and female choice tests. Also, several morphological traits of mated and nonmated individuals were analysed using traditional and geometric morphometrics. The results indicate that the leg shape is subjected to precopulatory sexual selection. Key words: Pachyiulus hungaricus, Diplopoda, euanamorphosis, morphological variability defensive glands, secretory cells, defensive secretion, antimicrobial effect, mating success. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In the New World, the milliped family Platyrhacidae (Polydesmida) is known or projected for Central America south of southeastern Nicaragua and the northern ¼ of South America, with disjunct, insular populations on Hispaniola (Haiti), Guadeloupe (Basse-Terre), and St. Lucia. Male near-topotypes enable redescription of Proaspis aitia Loomis, 1941, possibly endemic to the western end of the southern Haitian peninsula. The tibiotarsus of its biramous gonopodal telopodite bends strongly laterad, and the medially directed solenomere arises at midlength proximal to the bend. With a uniramous telopodite, P. sahlii Jeekel, 1980, on Guadeloupe, is not congeneric, and Hoffmanorhacus, n. gen., is erected to accommodate it. Nannorrhacus luciae (Pocock, 1894), on St. Lucia, is redescribed; also with a biramous telopodite, its tibiotarsus arises distad and diverges from the coaxial solenomere.

The position of crustaceans within Arthropoda - Evidence from nine molecular loci and morphology GONZALO GIRIBET', STEFAN RICHTER2, GREGORY D. EDGECOMBE3 & WARD C. ' Friedrich-Schiller-UniversitdtJena, Instituifiir Spezielte Zoologie und Evolutionsbiologie, Jena, Germany 3Australian Museum, Sydney, NSW, Australia Division of Invertebrate Zoology, American Museum of Natural History, New York, U.S.A. ABSTRACT The monophyly of Crustacea, relationships of crustaceans to other arthropods, and internal phylogeny of Crustacea are appraised via parsimony analysis in a total evidence frame work. Data include sequences from three nuclear ribosomal genes, four nuclear coding genes, and two mitochondrial genes, together with 352 characters from external morphol ogy, internal anatomy, development, and mitochondrial gene order. Subjecting the com bined data set to 20 different parameter sets for variable gap and transversion costs, crusta ceans group with hexapods in Tetraconata across nearly all explored parameter space, and are members of a monophyletic Mandibulata across much of the parameter space. Crustacea is non-monophyletic at low indel costs, but monophyly is favored at higher indel costs, at which morphology exerts a greater influence. The most stable higher-level crusta cean groupings are Malacostraca, Branchiopoda, Branchiura + Pentastomida, and an ostracod-cirripede group. For combined data, the Thoracopoda and Maxillopoda concepts are unsupported, and Entomostraca is only retrieved under parameter sets of low congruence. Most of the current disagreement over deep divisions in Arthropoda (e.g., Mandibulata versus Paradoxopoda or Cormogonida versus Chelicerata) can be viewed as uncertainty regarding the position of the root in the arthropod cladogram rather than as fundamental topological disagreement as supported in earlier studies (e.g., Schizoramia versus Mandibulata or Atelocerata versus Tetraconata).

Abstract Cytogenetic studies of the family Lycosidae (Arachnida: Araneae) are scarce. Less than 4% of the described species have been analyzed and the male haploid chromosome numbers ranged from 8+X1X2 to 13+X1X2. Species formerly classified as Lycosa were the most studied ones. Our aim in this work was to perform a comparative analysis of the meiosis in “Lycosa” erythrognatha Lucas, “Lycosa” pampeana Holmberg and Schizocosa malitiosa (Tullgren). We also compared male and female karyotypes and characterized the heterochromatin of “L.” erythrognatha. The males of the three species had 2n = 22, n = 10+X1X2, all the chromosomes were telocentric and there was generally a single chiasma per bivalent. In “Lycosa” pampeana, which is described cytogenetically for the first time herein, the bivalents and sex chromosomes showed a clustered arrangement at prometaphase I. The comparison of the male/female karyotypes (2n = 22/24) of “Lycosa” erythrognatha revealed that the sex chromosomes were the largest of the com- plement and that the autosomes decreased gradually in size.

Due to their cryptic lifestyle, rarity in natural history collections, and sporadic study over the last century, the family has an unclear phylogenetic placement, and intrafamilial relationships remain unknown. Here we report the discovery of a second spe- cies of Illacme, a millipede genus notable for possessing the greatest number of legs of any known animal on the planet.

In the department of Biological Sciences of the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences 2005 By Jeremy S. Gibson B.S. Northern Kentucky University, 2000 Committee: Dr. George W. Uetz, Chair Dr. Elke Buschbeck Dr. Kenneth Petren ii Abstract I investigated the importance of the seismic component, substratum-borne vibrations, of the multimodal courtship display in the wolf spider Schizocosa ocreata (Hentz) (Araneae: Lycosidae). It is currently known that the visual signaling component of male multimodal courtship displays conveys condition-dependent information, and that females can use this signal alone in mate choice decisions. I found that isolated seismic signals are also used in mate choice, as females preferred males that were louder, higher pitched and with shorter signaling pulses. Results also showed that male seismic signals are dependent on current condition and may convey information about male size and body condition. Seismic signals and visual signals are likely redundant, although some aspects of seismic signals may convey different information, supporting both the redundant and multiple messages hypotheses. i ii Acknowledgements I would foremost like to thank Dr. George Uetz, my graduate advisor for all of his support throughout this adventure.

In: Stoev P, Edgecombe GD (Eds) Proceedings of the 17th International Congress of Myriapodology, Krabi, Thailand. ZooKeys 741: 77–91. https://doi.org/10.3897/zookeys.741.21909 Abstract The presence of a swinging tentorium is a key apomorphy of Myriapoda, but this character has been studied in detail in only few species. Here the tentorium, i.e., the peristomatic skeleton of the preoral chamber, is comparatively studied in three species of the millipede order Sphaerotheriida Brandt, 1833. Since dissections of the fragile tentorial components proved to be difficult, despite the large head size, they were analysed mainly in situ via micro-computed tomography.

  • Monophyly of the Ring-Forming Group in Diplopoda (Myriapoda, Arthropoda) Based on SSU and LSU Ribosomal RNA Sequences

The first is whether millipedes with a fusion ring, including Polydesmida, Spirobolida, Spirostreptida and Julida, form a monophyletic group (the ring-forming group). The second con- cerns the phylogenetic relationship within the three orders of Juliformia, i.e. Julida, Spirostreptida and Spirobolida. To resolve these phylogenetic controversies, we sequenced 18S and 28S rDNA from six millipede orders and retrieved several homologous sequences from GenBank. Our results give robust support to the monophyly of the ring-forming group based on maximum parsimony methods, max- imum likelihood methods and Bayesian inference. The monophyly of the ring-forming group suggests that the fusion of segment sclerites might have occurred only once during millipede evolutionary history. We also established a sister-group relationship between Spirobol- ida and Spirostreptida within Juliformia after eliminating a short-branch attraction phenomenon, which is consistent with that from the mitochondrial genome analysis.
