Included in this directory is information on approximately 1,500 universities, two- and four-year colleges, technical institutes, and occupationally oriented vocational schools. The information in each entry varies and is dependent on the institution's response to the survey of early childhood professional preparation programs. The minimum entry contains the name and address of the institution, while the most comprehensive entry contains the institutional name and address, program name, degrees offered, contact person's name and telephone number, the number of credits or courses required for the degrees, the system (semester or quarter), and the required field work hours. The directory is organized alphabetically by state or territory, and within each state, cities are listed in alphabetical order. Colleges within the same city are listed in alphabetical order. The Council administers the Child Development Associate National Credentialing Program, providing uniform procedures for assessing the competence of early childhood caregivers.The Council works to improve the professional status of early chiklood workers and is helping to meet the growing need for qualified child care staff by creating a national training system, The Child Development Associate Professional Preparation Program. The Directory lists all institutions of postsecondary education* which offer formal trainingin early childhood/child development in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. As of February 1989, there were 1488 entries including 558 with expanded entries (types 2 & 3, seeListings). The information on these postsecondary institutions came fromthe data received from the 1987-88 survey "Early Childhood ProfessionalPreparation Programs" developed by the Council for Early ChildhoodProfessional Recognition and the National Association for the Education of YoungChildren. Names of institutions came from "Peterson's Guide to TWo-YearColleges 1087" and "Peterson's Guide to Four-YPar Colleges 1987."The final source for addresses of colleges was the "1986 Directory of PostsecondaryInstitutions," Center for Education Statistics, U.S. Department of Education. Early Childhood training is conducted by a variety ofproviders including many Child care centers; however, the Directory is limited to those institutions providing postsecondary education in the early childhood/child development area. Included in the Directory are universities, two- and four-year colleges, technical institutes andoccupationally-oriented vocational schools. Within institutions, programs were located in a variety of departments such as Child care, Child and FamilyStudies, Child Development, Child Psychology, Curriculum and Instruction, EarlyChildhood Education, Education, lime Economics, Human Development, SpecialEducation, etc. Early childhood education spans birth through third grade though notall programs covered the entire range. This includes programs of an academic, vocational andcontinuing professional education purpose. TYPES OF LISTINGS: There are three types of listings in the directory. The first type lists only the name and address of the institution. An expanded entry (Types 2 and 3 below) appears for every institution that responded to the survey, "Early Childhood Professional Preparation Programs."
