Feagin In this qualitative study, I examine the experiences of African American pilots and flight attendants with emotional labor. Integral to existing theories of emotional labor is the incorporation of voices of color and their contemporary movement into professional industries. Essentially, most all theories of emotional labor were built through the examination of low-wage service workers in gendered or racially segregated occupations, with only recent incorporations of gendered occupations within professional settings. Using the theoretical concept of emotional labor, or the labor required to reduce or suppress feeling in order to sustain the outward countenance that produces the proper state of mind in others, I argue that emotional labor is much more than labor produced within the confines of a job, but is also based on identity characteristics that directly influence interactions in the workplace. Therefore, I qualitatively examine, through in-depth interviews with more than thirty African American flight crewmembers, how emotional labor is influenced and performed when people of color are introduced to professional settings. iv The results of this study show that there are multiple dimensions of emotional labor that should be added to existing theory. Primarily, existing standards of emotional labor in the airline industry are a direct result of institutional structures and cultures created during a period of systematic exclusion that do not account for contemporary racism and sexism. Thus, performing emotional labor in this industry is unequally placed on those white women and people of color that had no input into its creation. The results of this study suggest that emotional labor should be inclusive of systemic racism perspectives as a method of understanding how salient identity characteristics, such as gender, race, and class, are directly connected to preconceived ideologies that influence interactions that call for emotional labor. Moreover, because African American men and women in this industry are underrepresented, emotional labor becomes a necessity in their interactions with coworkers, consumers, and management. NOTES EMPLOYMENT DISCRIMINATION AND INTERSTATE CARRIERS In 1957, Marlon Green, a former United States Air Force pilot and a Negro, filed an application for employment with Continental Air Lines, an interstate corporation whose flight operations extend to eight states. Green was tested and interviewed but not hired.' He filed a complaint with the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Commission and, after a hearing, the Commission found that Continental Air Lines had violated the Anti- Discrimination Act of 1957.2 Finding that Green was the best qualified applicant,3 the Commission ordered the airline to enroll him in their training school.' On appeal, the Commission's order was reversed and the complaint dismissed. The trial judge held that the application of the fair employment act to interstate carriers resulted in a substantial burden on commerce and that the area had been preempted by congressional action and executive orders.

Zirulnik All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT This study sought to inform the curriculum of crew resource management (CRM) for multi-pilot flight deck operations. The CRM curriculum requires continued reexamination to ensure safe flight in the changing demographic of flight decks in the US. The study calls attention to the CRM curriculum’s insufficient inclusion of robust training components to address intercultural communication skills and conflict management strategies. Utilizing a phenomenological approach, the study examined the communicative experiences of African American female military and airline transport pilots on the flight deck and within the aviation industry. Co-cultural theory was used as a theoretical framework to investigate these co-researcher’s (pilots) experiences. A parallel goal of the investigation was to better understand raced and gendered communication as they occur in this specific context—the flight deck of US airlines and military aircraft. The researcher conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews and shadowed two co-researchers (pilots) for a period of days and built a relationship with them over the course of one year. Eight years of preparation working in the airline industry situated the researcher for this study.

Meyer Assistant Professor Department of History Auburn University Introduction In the late 1960s, Roosevelt Lewis took a Civil Air Patrol plane out for a routine training flight. After he landed, he noticed a commotion on the far side of the airport fence. Children on a field trip to the airport had rushed over to watch him taxi the plane to its parking place. As Lewis, wearing aviator’s sunglasses and a flight suit, climbed out of the cockpit and ambled over to answer questions, he heard several kids shout, “Hey Mister, where’s the pilot?”1 A few years later, Jessie Lee Brown, a former helicopter door gunner in Vietnam who had earned his civilian pilot’s license upon returning home, rented a plane for a cross country flight in his home state of Alabama. As he carefully cleaned the windshield before his flight, another pilot called out for Brown to come over and wash his windshield; clearly this man had mistaken Brown for a lowly airport attendant instead of a fellow pilot.2 A decade later in the early 1980s, Leon Johnson was routinely hailed as he walked through the airport concourse in his airline pilot’s uniform by travelers who asked him to carry their bags.
