Piper Southeastern La. (‘91) • Ninth Year J.P. Piper enters his ninth season at the helm of the Colonel basketball program, having amassed a 88-146 overall record through eight seasons. With the second youngest team in the country in the 2011-12 season, Piper helmed a squad that only had one win through the fi rst half of Southland play, before rallying the team to win fi ve of their last eight games to make an appearance in the conference tournament for the fourth straight year. It’s the third time in program history that Nicholls has made the postseason tournament in four straight years, and with his fi fth-straight double-digit winning season, ties coach Ricky Broussard for the second-longest streak in coaching history. In 2010-11, Piper guided the Colonels to their fourth straight double-digit win season and third straight appearance in the Southland Conference Tournament. It’s the third time in Colonel history that the team has made at least three consecutive appearances in the tournament since joining the league in basketball. Under the direction of Piper and his coaching staff, departed Colonel guard/forward Anatoly Bose fi nished ninth in the nation in 2010-11 with a 22.1 point/game average en route to being named Louisiana Basketball Player of the Year, fi rst team All-Southland Conference and NABC fi rst team all-district. Bose fi nished his career as the leading scorer in Nicholls history racking up 2,051 career points in his four year career. In 2009-10, Piper led the Colonels to their third consecutive double-digit win season and their second consecutive Southland Conference Tournament appearance. The Colonels’ 2010 Southland Conference Tournament berth marked the fi rst time that the Colonels have qualifi ed for consecutive postseason berths since Nicholls qualifi ed for three straight tournaments from 1998-99 through 2000-01. Piper engineered one of the strongest regular seasons in school history in 2008-09, leading the Colonels to a 20-11 record and a 12-4 Southland Conference mark. The 2008-09 season marked the second 20-win campaign since Nicholls moved up to Division I in 1980-81, and the fi rst one since 1994-95. The Colonels produced three Southland Conference postseason honorees in Ryan Bathie (First-Team All-SLC), Anatoly Bose (Third-Team All-SLC) and Fred Hunter (Freshman of the Year). In 2007-08, Piper led Nicholls to a 10-21 record (5-11 SLC) and a fi fth place fi nish in the Southland Conference East Division. Under Piper’s tutelage, the Colonels traveled the country to face some of the toughest competition in the nation in No. 1 North Carolina, Alabama, Florida State and California. Piper has gained a reputation for playing some of the toughest non-conference schedules in the country, dubbed ‘scheduling insanity’ by ESPN’s Andy Katz. CollegeInsider.com named Piper the 2006-07 Southland Conference Coach of the Year for leading the Colonels to victory in fi ve of their last seven SLC match-ups and falling just one point shy of an SLC Tournament berth. Before being named head coach at Nicholls in 2004, Piper served two seasons as the top assistant for the Colonels (2002-04) under the direction of head coach Ricky Blanton. Prior to joining the college ranks, the Baton Rouge, La. native held the position of head basketball coach at The Dunham School (Baton Rouge, La.) where

NOTES EMPLOYMENT DISCRIMINATION AND INTERSTATE CARRIERS In 1957, Marlon Green, a former United States Air Force pilot and a Negro, filed an application for employment with Continental Air Lines, an interstate corporation whose flight operations extend to eight states. Green was tested and interviewed but not hired.' He filed a complaint with the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Commission and, after a hearing, the Commission found that Continental Air Lines had violated the Anti- Discrimination Act of 1957.2 Finding that Green was the best qualified applicant,3 the Commission ordered the airline to enroll him in their training school.' On appeal, the Commission's order was reversed and the complaint dismissed. The trial judge held that the application of the fair employment act to interstate carriers resulted in a substantial burden on commerce and that the area had been preempted by congressional action and executive orders.

Communicative Experiences of African American Female Pilots on the Flight Deck: An Application of Co-Cultural Theory and Narrative Nonfiction to Inform Crew Resource Management by Michael L. Zirulnik A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Approved September 2015 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Janet Alberts, Co-Chair Benjamin Broome, Co-Chair Lee Gutkind Mark Orbe ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY December 2015 © 2015 Michael L. Zirulnik All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT This study sought to inform the curriculum of crew resource management (CRM) for multi-pilot flight deck operations. The CRM curriculum requires continued reexamination to ensure safe flight in the changing demographic of flight decks in the US. The study calls attention to the CRM curriculum’s insufficient inclusion of robust training components to address intercultural communication skills and conflict management strategies. Utilizing a phenomenological approach, the study examined the communicative experiences of African American female military and airline transport pilots on the flight deck and within the aviation industry. Co-cultural theory was used as a theoretical framework to investigate these co-researcher’s (pilots) experiences. A parallel goal of the investigation was to better understand raced and gendered communication as they occur in this specific context—the flight deck of US airlines and military aircraft. The researcher conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews and shadowed two co-researchers (pilots) for a period of days and built a relationship with them over the course of one year. Eight years of preparation working in the airline industry situated the researcher for this study.

  • LSUS Men's Basketball Roster Continues to Grow
LSUS Men's Basketball Roster continues to grow AUGUST 09, 2005 Shreveport, LA---Men’s basketball is returning for its junior year at LSUS with new expectations, new goals, and a roster full of new faces. The Pilots 2005 journey ended with a loss in the round of Sweet 16 at the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City, MO, and a final regular season ranking of #7 in the nation. The season’s last game also brought to an end the college careers of five outstanding young men and extremely talented athletes in the likes of Derrick Hill, Justin Collins, Abraham Saxon, David Walker, and Derrick Rogers. “Those 5 guys will be remembered forever here at LSUS.” Commented head coach Chad McDowell just days after returning from the NAIA national tournament. “They will always be family and will be given credit for helping build our program in such a short amount of time. Replacing these guys will be tough. They are more than just great players; they are great young men and fierce competitors.” With such a dramatic roster renewal, most NAIA fans and supporters may be thinking “well, they better have enjoyed the ride while it lasted.” This may be the case for many programs that may have to suffer through the heartache and hard times of a rebuilding year after such a successful run at the ultimate goal of a national championship; this however is not the case for the LSUS Pilots. The Pilot fans are excited to see the returners and the players the have coming in.
