The inclusion of vegan and animal activist messages represents a long history of feminist media including animal activist topics throughout feminist history. Further, alternative media have the potential to foster counterpublics and play a role in the development of social movements. This textual analysis examines the way discourses of veganism and animal activism are represented in Bust’s online media content and how Bust links veganism and animal activism to feminism. This analysis found that Bust represents animal activism in three ways: (1) By linking veganism to ethical consumerism; (2) By linking veganism and animal activism to celebrity and style; (3) By commenting on current events related to veganism or animal activism. Applying ecofeminist and critical animal studies theories, this research explores the potential and limitations of Bust’s subcultural appeal and commodity activism approach to animal advocacy. Bust’s subcultural “hipster” appeal and feminist politics make it an interesting site to explore the potential of feminist media to spread intersectional social justice messages that include nonhuman animals to an audience already primed for political protest by way of their feminist identities. This analysis finds, however, that Bust’s exclusion of diverse vegan perspective and ambivalent stance on animal activism compromises their feminist politics. iii AcknowleDgements I offer my immense appreciation to the faculty, staff (especially Shauna Oddleifson), and students in Creative and Critical Studies who generously supported me and my work in myriad ways throughout the course of this research. However, as Carol Adams has taken great pains to point out, feminism should not simply end at the species divide. Nor, for that matter, should gay, lesbian, or queer rights. --Vasile Stanescu, “Why ‘Loving’ Animals is Not Enough: A Response to Kathy Rudy, Locavorism, and the Marketing of ‘Humane’ Meat” Feminist media, such as Bust magazine, participate in spreading the messages of progressive social movements at the street level by packaging easily digestible articles with glossy photos and celebrity covers. Suzy D’Enbeau found that Bust “link[s] feminism with other social change movements and reinforce[s] a feminist political agenda”1 through the use of paid advertisements (which fund the magazine). Barbara Marshall has noted that alternative media with a social change agenda plays a role in facilitating a revitalized public sphere.2 By analyzing a popular feminist media outlet like Bust, this project seeks to explore how contemporary popular feminist media fosters a new politics of consumption as a way to link feminism with animal activism. This included nearly 1 million calves, 2.5 million sheep and lambs, 34 million cattle, 110 million hogs, 242 million turkeys, and well over 8.7 billion chickens (USDA 2011a; 2011b). Though hundreds of slaughterhouses actively contributed to these totals, more than half of the cattle just mentioned were killed at just fourteen plants. A slightly greater percentage of hogs was killed at only twelve (USDA 2011a). Chickens were processed in a total of three hundred and ten federally inspected facilities (USDA 2011b), which means that if every facility operated at the same capacity, each would have slaughtered over fifty-three birds per minute (nearly one per second) in every minute of every day, adding up to more than twenty-eight million apiece over the course of twelve months.1 Incredible as these figures may seem, 2010 was an average year for agricultural animals. Indeed, for nearly a decade now the total number of birds and mammals killed annually in the US has come in at or above the nine billion mark, and such enormous totals are possible only by virtue of the existence of an equally enormous network of industrialized agricultural suppliers. These high-volume farming operations – dubbed “factory farms” by the general public, or “Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs)” by state and federal agencies – are defined by the ways in which they restrict animals’ movements and behaviors, locate more and more bodies in less and less space, and increasingly mechanize many aspects of traditional husbandry.

    2016 Additions to our Farm Family Silky & Satin Two lambs have a new lease on life at our sanctuary. Silky and Satin (right) were born on February 7, 2016 on a production farm, destined for slaughter. Soon after birth they had their tails cut off and their ears hole-punched for identity tags, with no an- esthesia. Their mom rejected them, and both lambs sustained broken legs. The farm did not want to care for them so they lived in the vet’s dining room while their legs healed and then they joined our Safe Haven family. They spend their days bounc- ing around, exploring the farm and sneaking into the feed room whenever they get the chance. We are so pleased to have these two cuties as part of our farm family! Amos the Rooster Amos was rescued by a compassionate person in a nearby town. The little rooster had a deformed leg and was being chased and pecked by 4 other roosters who lived in the yard. A neighbor took pity on the little rooster and let him hide under his deck; Amos would only come out at night when the other roosters had gone to bed. Here at Safe Haven, Amos moved in with three friendly hens: Stretch, Rachel and Ardsley (her story is on Pg. 2). IN THIS ISSUE For the first time in his life, Amos wasn’t pecked and chased. My research has unearthed that there are approximately 454 animal sanctuaries in the United States, of which 146 are dedicated to farm animals. However, of this 166 only 4 are dedicated to pigs, while 17 are specifically dedicated to the bovine. Furthermore, another 50, though not specifically dedicated to cows, do use the cow as the main symbol for their logo. Therefore the bovine is seemingly more represented and protected than any other farm animal in sanctuaries across the United States. The question is why the bovine, and how much has religion played a role in elevating this particular animal above all others. Furthermore, what constitutes a sanctuary? Does

    Running head: FEMINISM, ECOFEMINISM, & VEGETARIANISM Intersections: Vegetarianism from an Ecofeminist Perspective Anne Proescholdt Luther College FEMINISM, ECOFEMINISM, & VEGETARIANISM 2 When I was about a month into a semester-long college course called “Buddhism, Animals, and Animal Welfare,” I noticed that I was no longer eating meat. After watching and reading about the slaughter of animals for food, I was faced with the reality of what exactly I had been eating for two decades of my life, and I could not stomach it anymore. I was forced to acknowledge that I had been eating individual beings who had eyes like my cats’ but who did not get to live out the same long and happy life. American cultural norms dictate that we are not supposed to think of pet animals as food, but I began to question how and why we make distinctions between certain animal species and how we use them to our “benefit.” Dogs and cats are supposed to love us; cows, pigs, chickens, and turkeys are meant to feed us; primates, rats, and mice are science experiments; rabbit eyes are for chemical testing; horses are for laboring; and the list goes on. When I used to eat meat, I always requested my portion “well-done,” as I did not want to cut or bite into something that would bleed. “That’s not blood,” I was told. “Those are juices.” I decided to accept the euphemism—thinking about it too much would ruin my appetite (which, in hindsight, was a big clue). The myths we tell ourselves in order to assimilate to cultural norms operate to silence dissension, critical thought, questioning of any kind.

My argument will present how applying transgender as an analytical category to vegetarian eco-feminisms, can be contributive in expanding ethical and political solidarity within feminist projects, which apply gender identity politics to their conceptualizations and argumentations. I will outline the potential to transcend usages of gender identity politics upon a cisnormative canon of vegetarian eco-feminisms lead by Carol J. Adams’ The Sexual Politics of Meat (1990). Adams’s canon of vegetarian eco-feminisms appropriates diet as a central resource of their political projects, which contest speciesism and cis-sexism. Like Adams’ canon, my analysis will consider diet as always having political connotations and implications, both for individuals and their embodiments, within broader socio-political realms. Alongside diet, transgender as an analytical category will be employed within analysis, due to its potential of exposing how genders as social categories and constructs are re-formed. My analysis will be based on narrative interviews, which will explore the multi-directional ethical and political implications of meat non-consumption and cisgender non-conformity among members of Berlin’s transgender / cisgender non-conforming and meat non-consuming subcultures.

    Journal for Critical Animal Studies, Volume VI, Issue 1, 2008 Book Review: Nature Ethics: An Ecofeminist Perspective, Kheel, Marti (Rowman Littlefield 2008) Lynda Birke1 “There are plenty more where that came from.” So I was told when, as a trainee biologist, I became upset at the death of a lab rat. So too said the Division of Wildlife to a woman concerned to find orphaned fox kits in Colorado - the example with which Kheel begins this book. It is a widespread assumption that as long as there are enough animals to make up a robust population of the species, then the loss of one or two simply does not matter. And there is another message: that emotional responses, such as my grief for the rat or the unknown woman’s empathy for baby foxes, do not matter. What is important, it would seem, is survival of species or ecosystems. There is undoubtedly a tension between such a stance in writing about environmental ethics, and the concerns of animal liberation. For the latter, individual suffering and death matters a great deal, and there cannot be a justification for killing animals in the name of any greater good. In Nature Ethics, feminist activist and writer Marti Kheel explores ideas about nature in the work of environmentalist thinkers: but, significantly, she seeks to do so through challenging the assumption that individuals are not important. Her task is to find an ethics which pays attention to both nature in general and simultaneously to individual animals and their suffering. Kheel’s odyssey began with concern about how humans treat other animals (whom she calls “other-than-humans”), but she found neither environmental nor animal liberation philosophy to be helpful.
