Well Quiet Riot drummer Frankie Banali is on a mission to do the unthinkable and cover some of the greatest tunes ever recorded by none other than Led Zeppelin. What is the reason for this unimaginable feat? Well, I can say it in two words: John Bonham . Frankie has assembled an all star line up of musicians to pay homage to the man that inspired him to pick up the stix. He enlisted the services of fretless bass master, Tony Franklin, to solidify the rhythm section and then he brought in a who’s who of guitarists and vocalists to round out the project. Frankie carefully picked the musicians for each song so that each would be treated with the respect that it deserved. Alex Ligertwood starts off the festivities with a truly killer remake of The Wanton Song, with monster guitarist Doug Aldrich manning the axe. It doesn’t slow down from there with Glenn Hughes’ incredible interpretation of Four Sticks. Glenn adds a bit of soul to the tune that just makes it sound bigger than ever. To top off all of the vocal giants on this record, vocalist Paul Shortino delivers big on Ramble On, rivaling the original. I could go on, but you just need to check it out for yourself. There are some incredible interpretations of some of the most classic Zep songs ever recorded. Some of the tunes won’t totally knock your socks off, but for the most part this is a solid effort. And did I forget to mention that Frankie’s drumming is amazing on this record? Hat’s off to Frankie for doing a tribute record that truly pays homage to a classic band without tarnishing the original versions. If you’re a Zeppelin fan and/or like tribute records that do it right, then check this one out. You won’t be disappointed. Standout Tracks: Ramble On, The Wanton Song, Four Sticks and Custard Pie - Ragman is pulling out his Kashmir. The Interplay of Authority, Masculinity, and Signification in the “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014, Holly Johnson ii Abstract This thesis will deconstruct the "grunge killed '80s metal” narrative, to reveal the idealization by certain critics and musicians of that which is deemed to be authentic, honest, and natural subculture. The central theme is an analysis of the conflicting masculinities of glam metal and grunge music, and how these gender roles are developed and reproduced. I will also demonstrate how, although the idealized authentic subculture is positioned in opposition to the mainstream, it does not in actuality exist outside of the system of commercialism. The problematic nature of this idealization will be examined with regard to the layers of complexity involved in popular rock music genre evolution, involving the inevitable progression from a subculture to the mainstream that occurred with both glam metal and grunge. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

The Roots Report: Starship Fails to Blast Off and The Guess Who Left Me Scratching My Head Mickey Thomas of Starship Okee dokee folks… The other night I went to check out a show featuring two classic rock bands at Twin River’s Event Center. The bands were Starship, featuring Mickey Thomas, and The Guess Who. I have never had the chance to see these bands live before, but have seen a few of the original members of the original line-ups in separate circumstances. While I am not a huge fan of Starship, I was a fan of its former incarnations, The Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship, and I do very much enjoy the music of The Guess Who. The concert on Saturday night I felt was heavy-handed and left me wondering what I had just seen. Of the 11 musicians between the two bands, there was only ONE founding member in their rosters: The Guess Who’s drummer, Garry Peterson. The new members, or “hired guns,” seemed out of place and took liberties that one should not do when presenting classic rock. It almost seemed as if members of Spinal Tap had taken over the two bands. The one shining star of the evening was Starship’s Stephanie Calvert. Her look and voice filled the Grace Slick void very well, though at times she seemed to be trying too hard to sound like Slick. While Mickey Thomas has earned his place in Starship and is the voice of the classic song by Elvin Bishop “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” his pipes, at 68, are getting a tad rusty though they still pass.
