“Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson
The Interplay of Authority, Masculinity, and Signification in the “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014, Holly Johnson ii Abstract This thesis will deconstruct the "grunge killed '80s metal” narrative, to reveal the idealization by certain critics and musicians of that which is deemed to be authentic, honest, and natural subculture. The central theme is an analysis of the conflicting masculinities of glam metal and grunge music, and how these gender roles are developed and reproduced. I will also demonstrate how, although the idealized authentic subculture is positioned in opposition to the mainstream, it does not in actuality exist outside of the system of commercialism. The problematic nature of this idealization will be examined with regard to the layers of complexity involved in popular rock music genre evolution, involving the inevitable progression from a subculture to the mainstream that occurred with both glam metal and grunge. I will illustrate the ways in which the process of signification functions within rock music to construct masculinities and within subcultures to negotiate authenticity. iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank firstly my academic advisor Dr. William Echard for his continued patience with me during the thesis writing process and for his invaluable guidance. I also would like to send a big thank you to Dr. James Deaville, the head of Music and Culture program, who has given me much assistance along the way. -

PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -
The Humour of Greyson Chance (To Mark the Third Anniversary of the Beginning of His Career)
1 The Humour Of Greyson Chance (to mark the third anniversary of the beginning of his career) 28 April 2010, when he posted his cover of Paparazzi and his own song Broken Hearts to YouTube, is usually regarded as the beginning of his career. A year ago (on 30 April 2012), during a private function in Hongkong, he recounted that his fans had tweeted to him two days previously ’Two years, two years, two years’ and that he had wondered ‘What’s two years?’ which provoked merriment among the audience. Upon this, he performed a liberally modified version of his cover of Lady Gaga’s Paparazzi, originally the commencement of his career: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNZFilwkfvU It is reassuring that his fans remind him of this anniversary when he himself fails to remember it! This was the time that followed his (band-accompanied) first concert tour in South-East Asia, when he stayed on for a few weeks to perform solo and give interviews. His most frequently varied song, Waiting Outside The Lines, he often interpreted in an exuberant manner, winding up by repeating the ‘wo-o’ for up to forty seconds. Unfortunately, the videos are often of a bad quality: 24 April in Taiwan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iL2Qa_6XGZg 20 April in Hongkong: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnsZkuCKwUs 4 May in Bangkok: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHI65bMUj9o These videos show clearly that he entertains not only his fans, but also himself, and that it is one of his basic characteristics to vary the songs from each perfomance to the next. -

Woodstock-Era Music of the 1960S to Rock Mount Clemens Fireworks
Woodstock-era music of the 1960s to rock Mount Clemens fireworks The Macomb Daily (http://www.macombdaily.com) Woodstock-era music of the 1960s to rock Mount Clemens fireworks Friday night event features free live music and fireworks along Clinton River By Mitch Hotts, The Macomb Daily Monday, June 22, 2015 Break out those bell-bottom jeans and tie-dye shirts -- the Mount Clemens Independence Day Celebration on Friday evening will feature music from the Woodstock era. Prior to the fireworks display at dusk, there will be a free live concert by two classic rock bands -- hometown favorites Eastside Westside and Oakland County-based Magic Bus, which specializes in the “free love” era of music from the 1960s and 70s. “In our view, there are two groups of people -- those who lived through the ‘60s and those who wish they had lived through the ‘60s,” said Mark Harrington of Waterford. Harrington, a self-described pop historian and founder of the seven-piece Magic Bus band, said the band does a tribute to various artists of that time frame, ranging from Bob Dylan to Steppenwolf, The Birds to the Beatles. “We basically take you on chronological tour of the 1960s because so much happened during that decade that changed the country,” he said. “We focus on the last three years, the Summer of Love, Woodstock and all that.” Magic Bus will perform on the Clinton River Park stage along the river near Mount Clemens City Hall about 8 p.m. The night will begin with a 6 p.m. concert by Eastside Westside, Like Magic Bus, Eastside Westside’s set list focuses on classic rock tunes from the 1960s/70s, said band spokesman Steve Ferdig. -

Well Quiet Riot drummer Frankie Banali is on a mission to do the unthinkable and cover some of the greatest tunes ever recorded by none other than Led Zeppelin. What is the reason for this unimaginable feat? Well, I can say it in two words: John Bonham . Frankie has assembled an all star line up of musicians to pay homage to the man that inspired him to pick up the stix. He enlisted the services of fretless bass master, Tony Franklin, to solidify the rhythm section and then he brought in a who’s who of guitarists and vocalists to round out the project. Frankie carefully picked the musicians for each song so that each would be treated with the respect that it deserved. Alex Ligertwood starts off the festivities with a truly killer remake of The Wanton Song, with monster guitarist Doug Aldrich manning the axe. It doesn’t slow down from there with Glenn Hughes’ incredible interpretation of Four Sticks. Glenn adds a bit of soul to the tune that just makes it sound bigger than ever. To top off all of the vocal giants on this record, vocalist Paul Shortino delivers big on Ramble On, rivaling the original.
