The Big Orchard Zo kunnen we nog wel een poosje doorgaan. Daar is op deze pagina’s echter geen ruimte voor, helaas. Dus gaan we terug naar onze stad Paramaribo. Creatieve landen stadgenoten zijn een poosje op zoek geweest naar een ‘passende’ bijnaam voor deze, de eerste stad van Suriname, waarmee zij zich van andere steden zou onderscheiden en kwamen op City of Smiles. Klinkt aardig, maar die naam is al geclaimd door Bacolodstad de hoofdplaats van Negros Occidental op de Filipijnen. En je kunt niet twee Cities of Smiles hebben, zomin als er twee Big Apples, twee Big Oranges of twee Big Easy’s kunnen bestaan.

Karakteristiek voor de hoofdstad van Suriname, althans voor de historische binnenstad, is de architectuur. Vrijwel alle gebouwen zijn hier in hout opgetrokken, wat de stad allengs de bijnaam Houten Stad opleverde. De bouw in Suriname heeft in de loop der eeuwen een reeks invloeden ondergaan. Allereerst die van de Engelsen, de eerste Europeanen die zich in Suriname vestigden. De invloed is zowel in de houtbouw als het stenenwerk lange tijd blijven Welkom… doorwerken. Dan komt er een inbreng vanuit Nederland en vervolgens uit Frankrijk. Als nu de vraag gesteld wordt aan welke stijl de gebouwen zijn gekoppeld, die de laatste tijd in Paramaribo en omstreken en in de districten worden neergezet, dan is het antwoord simpel: Aan geen enkele. in The Big Orchard

A collective sigh of relief goes through the whole plane, when a cheerful sounding voice says: “That is the nickname for Paramaribo”.

The Big Orchard And we could continue for a while longer. Unfortunately however there is not enough room for it on these pages. So let us go back to our city Paramaribo. Creative coun- trymen and citizens have been looking some time for an ‘appropriate’ nickname for this, the first city of Suriname, enabling it to distinguish itself from other cities and came up with the City of Smiles. Sounds nice, but that name was already claimed by Bacolod City the capital of Negros Occidental in the Philippines. And you cannot have two Cities of Smiles, not any more than two Big Apples, Oranges or two Big Easy’s.

Characteristic for the capital of Suriname, at least for the Welkom… historical inner city is the architecture. Almost all the buildings are built of wood, probably giving the city its nickname Wooden Town. Construction in Suriname has over the centuries undergone a series of influences. First, that of the English, the first Europeans who settled in Suriname. The influence was visible for a long time in both wooden in The Big and stone constructions. Een woning is iets persoonlijks en moet aangepast zijn aan de persoon die het gaat bewonen en aan de omstandigheden. Ook met de cultuur van de bevolking moet bij de bouw rekening worden gehouden. Bij de cultuur van een volk hoort namelijk een bepaalde manier van bouwen en wonen. Ook het klimaat, en daarmee de temperatuur, speelt daarin een belangrijke rol. Zo komt het dat woningen en zakenpanden op ruime terreinen zijn neergezet, waar de wind vrij tussen kan waaien en verkoeling kan brengen. Anders gezegd, bij vrijwel elk huis, elk gebouw hoorde een tuin.

Maar die bouwwijze heeft een ander gevolg gehad. Geen erf of tuin zo klein, of er stond minstens 1 (één) vruchtboom op of in! En anders dan in andere steden, waar een of andere vruchtboom in een tuin een zeldzaamheid was, het ontbreken daarvan in Paramaribo was bijna een zeldzaamheid. De basis daarvoor is weliswaar eeuwen geleden gelegd, maar we plukken nu al jaren daar de vruchten van; letterlijk en figuurlijk.

Voor de bezoekende buitenlander (toerist of va- kantieganger) zijn vruchten als pommerak, zuurzak, granaatappel, sapotille, pomme de citère, carambola, West-Indische kers, waar wij, inboorlingen nauwelijks naar omkijken, exotisch.

Wie twijfelt raadplege pagina 8 van dit Magazine, onder de kop Ontdek Suriname bij de letter S. Paramaribo was en is nog steeds één grote boom- gaard. De bijnaam The Big Orchard zou daarom helemaal niet misplaatst zijn.

12 www.flyslm.com When the question is now asked, to which style the constructions being built in Paramaribo and the surrounding area and in the districts these days are linked, the answer is simple: To none. In construction, there are now significant differences in the use of material, color, size and height. Wood is practically no longer being used.

A house is something personal and must be adapted to the person who will inhabit it and to the circumstances. The culture of the people must be taken into account in the construction as well. The culture of a people includes as a matter of fact a way of building and living. Also the climate, and the resulting temperature, plays an important role. Consequently homes and business premises are built on spacious grounds where the wind can blow freely between them and generate a cooling effect. In other words, almost every house had a garden.

But this way of building has had another consequence. No yard or garden was so small or there was at least 1 (one) fruit tree! And unlike in other cities where one fruit tree or other in a garden was a rarity, the lack thereof in Paramaribo was almost a rarity. The basis for this has admittedly been laid centuries ago, but we have been reaping the fruits now for many years, literally and figuratively.

For the visiting foreigner (tourist or traveler) fruits like Malay rose apple, soursop, pomegranate, Sapodilla, pomme cythere, carambola, West Indian cherry, where we natives hardly look at, are exotic.

If in doubt consult page 9 of this magazine, under the headline Discover Suriname with the letter S Paramaribo was and still is one large orchard. The nickname The Big Orchard would therefore not be mis- placed at all.

Historian Dr. André Loor says in one of his writings that the year 1902 was one of the lows not only for Mariënburg, but for the whole of Suriname. The workers of the sugar cane plantation were not satisfied with the wages they received and went on strike on July 2nd 1902. On July 29th 1902 they attacked the director of the company. He was felled to death by the angry crowd. The next day the police arrested several suspects in the murder, but the workers pushed on and demanded the release of the prisoners. After a few warning shots by the military, called in to help, they aimed their shots at the crowd and killed 24 people. The dead were buried in a mass grave.

Archeologisch onderzoek Twee maanden geleden ging onder leiding van de archeoloog, drs. Benjamin Mitrasing, te plantage Mariënburg een zoektocht van start naar het massagraf. Hij kreeg daartoe toestemming van de regering en hulp van de Nederlandse en de Amerikaanse Ambassade in Paramaribo.

Volgens Mitrasing is het een wens van de gemeenschap van Mariënburg om te weten te komen waar de slachtoffers precies zijn begraven. Mitrasing vermoedt dat de lijken met een trolley over de spoorbaan van de suikerrietplantage zijn afgevoerd en links of recht van de baan zijn begraven in een massagraf. De minister van Binnenlandse Zaken, drs. Soewarto Moestadja, staat achter de opsporing van het massagraf. Hij zegt dat lokaliseren van het massagraf internationaal een positief effect zal hebben voor Suriname.

De Stichting Nagedachtenis Gevallen Helden heeft zich ingezet om de, wat zij noemt, de massamoord van Mariënburg uit de vergetelheid halen. Op 30 juli 2006 werd er daarom ter nagedachtenis van de doodgeschoten contractarbeiders en hun verzet een monument in Mariënburg onthuld.

Verschillende pogingen om Prahalad te vermoorden mislukten. Uiteindelijk kwam de zus van de koning, Holika, die een heks was met een plan haar neef op een brandstapel te krijgen om samen een bran- doffer aan de god Vishnu te brengen. Zo kwamen de woorden waarmee Bramha de koning had gezegend uit: hij zou niet gedood worden door een mens, noch door een dier, noch binnen, noch buiten, noch in de lucht en ook niet op de grond, niet overdag en niet 's avonds.

Het Holi-feest is een niet zuiver godsdienstig feest, maar heeft zowel een filosofische als een religieuze grondslag. Het verheerlijkt het ont- wakend leven aan het begin van de lente na een periode van diepe slaap toen de hele natuur in de greep van de winter was.

Ratna Rewat De pioniers van een bestemming

Toen ik zo’n twintig jaar geleden als 21-jarige voor het eerst ging ‘backpacken’, stond mijn moeder doodsangsten uit. Ze verwachtte elk moment een telefoontje uit de meest onherbergzame gebieden met de mededeling dat haar jongste telg in meerdere stukken was teruggevonden, haar bus in een ravijn was gestort of de ferryboot gezonken. Bij elk belhuisje of telefooncel voelde ik me dan ook genoodzaakt braaf naar het thuisfront te bellen. Wat een luxe hebben de backpackers tegenwoordig toch met hun smartphones! Daarnaast was het natuurlijk hoogst ongebruikelijk dat een Surinaams meisje ging backpacken. In al die backpackende jaren ben ik inderdaad slechts één keer een andere Surinamer tegengekomen.

About twenty years ago when as a 21-year old I went backpacking for the first time, my mother was just terrified. At any moment she expected a telephone call from some godforsaken place with a message that her youngest offspring had been found hacked to pieces, her bus had crashed into a ravine or the ferry had sunk. At each phone booth I was compelled to obediently call the home front. What a luxury the backpackers enjoy nowadays with their smart phones! Besides it was highly unusual for a Surinamese girl to go backpacking. As a matter of fact, in all those backpacking years I met another Surinamer only once. backpackers - de pioniers van een bestemming

n Suriname is het fenomeen ‘backpacker’ nog vrij onbekend. Hoewel ik dit tot mijn grote vreugde steeds meer signaleer! Maar wat (of be- Iter gezegd wie) is een backpacker nu precies? Is dat niet iemand die met een veel te grote rugzak en sandalen rondzeult, op zoek naar een goedkoop hostel, waar hij zich kan ontdoen van zijn gekreukelde vieze kleding om het stof van dagen van zich af te spoelen? Of nee, iemand die zo min mogelijk geld wil uitgeven aan transport, accommodatie en tours, dus die zien we liever gaan dan komen! Niet is minder waar. Over het algemeen zijn backpackers hoog opgeleid en hebben een brede interesse voor het behoud van natuur, milieu en inheemse culturen. Natuurlijk zijn het in de eerste plaats avonturiers, die de hele reis naar de bestemming als één groot avontuur ervaren. Dat wil zeggen dat ze goed voorbereid op pad gaan. Het echte ‘hiken’ naar onherbergzame plaatsen is nog steeds het summum voor backpackers, maar het gaat vooral om de vele ontmoetingen met mensen uit vreemde en verre culturen, dat het plaatje compleet maakt. Zeg maar gerust dat de backpackers de pioniers zijn als het gaat om de ‘beleving’ van een bestemming.

Massatoerisme Niet alleen op dat vlak zijn backpackers trendsetters. De trend is vaak dat backpackers een bestemming ‘ontdekken’, al snel gevolgd door de projectontwikkelaars die het grote geld ruiken. Voor je het weet is een slaperig dorpje uitgegroeid tot een massabestemming, met alle nade- lige gevolgen van dien. Het schiereiland Cancún in Mexico is daar wel het beste voorbeeld van. Iets meer dan zestig jaar geleden was Cancùn een vissersdorp waar slechts twee families woonden. Cancún in het uiterste oosten van Mexico, gelegen op het schiereiland Yucatán in de staat Quintana Roo, is in zes decennia uitgegroeid tot een stad met ruim 526.701 inwoners en wereldbekend als toeristenoord. Het werd door middel van een dam met het vasteland verbonden en er werd een internationale luchthaven Free Publicity aangelegd.
