The grand bazaar began construction in 1455 and opened in 1461. It is well known for its jewelry, pottery, spice, and carpet shops. Many of the stalls in the bazaar are grouped by the type of goods, with special areas for leather coats, gold jewelry and the like. Join us for this special tour with a professional, English-speaking guide, who will point out the best stalls to shop and explain the history of this very famous marketplace. Please wear comfortable walking shoes, dress in layers and bring an umbrella (umbrella provided by the hotel), as rain can be frequent during this time of year. -

Course Objective The Anatolian Peninsula that connects Asia and Europe has been at the epicenter of many empires and civilizations for thousands of years. Any attempt to understand the culture, institutions and many of the current challenges present in modern Turkey should begin with the study of these civilizations, which have contributed immensely to the development of the Western and Asian civilizations. After all, this is the place where the words Asia and Europe were coined and where the very first monumental structures in history were built (Gobeklitepe, dating back to 10000 BC). Also, I should mention that the father of modern history, Herodotus was a native of Turkey (a title first conferred by Cicero). This course is comparative and interdisciplinary in nature and crosses multiple disciplines including arts, sociology, cultural studies, history, urban planning, economics, and politics. We will constantly compare and contrast the past and the present, East and the West, Turkey and Europe, modern and archaic, secular and religious, democratic and authoritarian, etc. A special attention will be paid to challenge students’ pre-conceived notions, opinions, perspectives and attitudes towards Western vs. Non-Western civilizations, particularly so for those involving the Middle East and Europe. During our journey, we will visit thousand + years old churches, synagogues, mosques, ancient temples, palaces, cities, monuments as well as the most exquisite examples of modern art, and perhaps not so exquisite examples of modern architecture. -

SAYYIDAHSAN READER DEPARTMiNT OF ISLAMIC STTUDISS ALI6ARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH (INDIA) 20Di STff^o % ABSTRACT In tenth century, the Turks of central Asia had converted to Islam and by the eleventh century they began to push their way into South-Eastern Russia and Persia. The Ottoman State emerged consequent to an Islamic movement under Ghazi Osman (1299-1326), founder of the dynasty, at Eskisehir, in North- Eastern Anatolia. Sufis, Ulema and Ghazis of Anatolia played an important role in this movement. For six centuries the Ottomans were almost constantly at war with Christian Europe and had succeeded in imposing the Islamic rule over a large part of Europe. The later Sultans could not maintain it strictly. With the expansion of the Ottoman dominions the rulers became more autocratic with the sole aim of conquering alien land. To achieve this the rulers granted freedom and cultural autonomy to his non-Muslim subjects and allowed the major religious groups to establish self governing communities under the leadership of their own religious chiefs. The recent work is spread over two parts containing eight chapters with a brief introduction and my own conclusions. Each part has four chapters. Part I, chapters I to IV, deals with the political mobilization of the Turkish peasants from the beginning of the modernization period and to the war of Independence as well as the initial stages of the transition to comparative politics. -

Fresh simit!” A gypsy woman sets up her street display—bright shades of orange and red daisies—and settles down on a short stool with a cup of tea, ready to watch the day go by. A businessman with a newspaper tucked under one arm and a briefcase slung over his shoulder dodges a taxi while crossing the street and also checking the soccer scores on his smart phone. Street cats congregate around a plate of fish that a benevolent neighbor has bestowed. The scented air outside a corner bakery tempts hungry passers-by. This is ISTANBUL. * A simit is a sesame-coated ring of bread In the last two decades the city of Istanbul has experienced explosive growth, pushing its boundaries ever further, swallowing up green space and creating new districts. Each district, or ilce, functions like a small town, with its own government and priorities, all the while remaining a distinct segment of the city of Istanbul. Most tourists visiting Istanbul are romanced by the charm of the old city, once known as Constantinople. They tour the top sites carefully marking attractions off their list: —Hagia Sophia, famed church-turned-mosque-turned-museum —Sultanahmet, the Blue Mosque, exquisitely tiled Muslim place of worship —The Cisterns, underground water system dating to the Byzantine era —Topkapı Palace and Dolmabahçe Palace, homes of the Ottoman sultans Most never see more than one or two of Istanbul’s forty-one districts.
