The report was in the field of Social and Human Sciences, and it was made possible with the support of TUBITAK 2219 post-doctoral research program. The project has been carried out within the 16.01.2019-15.01.2020 period, under the supervision of Univ-Prof. Dr. Jürgen Breuste in Austria at the University of Salzburg, Geography and Geology Department, at the Division of Landscape and Urban Ecology. We would like to thank to the Department of Geography of Szeged University and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Péter Szilassi for separating and sharing the data about Yıldız Park that he has collected in the "Salzburg-Szeged-Yildiz (Istanbul) Park Survey" research on which we worked together. We would like to thank to Kamil Kanat for his contribution to the design of book‟s cover and, also Seher Yaldız and Zeynep Hayır for editing the English part In the first chapter of the book, following the explanation of what is meant by nature-based urban ecological area; nature-based recreation areas in metroplitan cities of Istanbul and Salzburg are emphasized. As an exemplary district in Istanbul, the parks in Beşiktaş region were focused on, and the distribution and classification of the parks were made. Then, a mobile application-based field study specific to Yıldız Park was made by means of the photographs of the landscape elements in the park, it was conducted to investigate the vegetation perception and preferences of the visitors, and the results were analyzed. Finally, in the light of field observations and researches within Istanbul and Salzburg cities, linear parks, which are considered important factors for the cities, have been highlighted. The research results are available in the first part of the book in English (pp. 1- 60) and in the second part in Turkish (pp.63-122). Following the reference, examples of thesis on urban ecology at the University of Salzburg as an additional list can be found. January 2021 i Nature-Based Recreation Areas In Metropolitan Cities Önsöz Bu kitap “Kentsel Ekolojik Dinlenme Alanı Modeli (KEDAM)” (Proje No: 1059B191601770) projesinin sonuç raporunun düzenlenmesi ile yayına hazırlanmıştır. • Istanbul Prayer Guide
PRAY THE DISTRICTS OF ISTANBULa prayer guide Step out the door and hear the horns honking, street dogs barking and the call of a local simit* seller bellowing out “Fresh simit! Fresh simit!” A gypsy woman sets up her street display—bright shades of orange and red daisies—and settles down on a short stool with a cup of tea, ready to watch the day go by. A businessman with a newspaper tucked under one arm and a briefcase slung over his shoulder dodges a taxi while crossing the street and also checking the soccer scores on his smart phone. Street cats congregate around a plate of fish that a benevolent neighbor has bestowed. The scented air outside a corner bakery tempts hungry passers-by. This is ISTANBUL. * A simit is a sesame-coated ring of bread In the last two decades the city of Istanbul has experienced explosive growth, pushing its boundaries ever further, swallowing up green space and creating new districts. Each district, or ilce, functions like a small town, with its own government and priorities, all the while remaining a distinct segment of the city of Istanbul. Most tourists visiting Istanbul are romanced by the charm of the old city, once known as Constantinople. They tour the top sites carefully marking attractions off their list: —Hagia Sophia, famed church-turned-mosque-turned-museum —Sultanahmet, the Blue Mosque, exquisitely tiled Muslim place of worship —The Cisterns, underground water system dating to the Byzantine era —Topkapı Palace and Dolmabahçe Palace, homes of the Ottoman sultans Most never see more than one or two of Istanbul’s forty-one districts.

Champlin Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Arts in TESOL degree at SIT Graduate Institute, Brattleboro, Vermont April 2019 IPP Advisor: Leslie Turpin Academic Writing Curriculum 3 Abstract This IPP combines a literature review and a materials development project. The literature review outlines and supports the approach taken throughout the curriculum and the materials that were developed. First, it lays out the nature of Turkish universities’ ELPP’s; then, it deals with the basic philosophy of the curriculum including individualization and standardization, the role of joy in education, the necessity for an integration of skills in teaching academic writing, the use of models, and the necessity and purpose of feedback. In the second half of the literature review, the key features of academic writing are discussed in advance of showing how to teach them. Recommendations are also given for testing the validity of the approach taken and for additional areas that should be studied. These are followed by a demonstration lesson where the principles are shown in action. Finally, the entire 32-week curriculum is presented, showing how this philosophy can be actualized in lesson planning, materials, and handouts. This paper examined outdoor recreation participation and its predictors in Istanbul, an increasingly urbanized and populated megacity, in Turkey. The results show that nearly half of the people interviewed in this study had claimed to visit a nature area at least once a week or more often, nearly three-quarters invested a travel time to these areas of between 30 min to 2 h, about two-thirds spent more than 2 h at the area, and about one-third was engaged in leisurely walking. The frequency of visits was almost the single predictor of travel time. Visit frequencies were predicted by the travel time and visit length. Activity type and traveling longer than 2 h predicted the length of visits. Recreational activity type was predicted by visit length and travel time. Socio-demographic variables were associated with only a few outdoor participation variables. The findings imply that the residents have limited contact with nature and limited opportunity to benefit from such interaction.
