Mini-pitchesEditorial for the future

UEFA’s Golden Jubilee year is coming to a close, but it is still too early to assess the activities organised in its honour, since there are still one or two events going on, such as the exhibition inaugurated at the European Parliament in , which is now on show at the National Football Museum in Preston in the northwest of England. Different UEFA member associations still have celebrations programmed as well. However, we can already conclude that the project to provide UEFA’s member associations with mini-pitches has been a huge success. This large-scale venture is actually part of UEFA’s HatTrick programme, but UEFA decided to give it an initial boost by offering a mini-pitch to each of its 52 member associations in its Golden Jubilee year. The choice of such a gift is of great symbolic value. It emphasises that although a fiftieth anniversary is an opportunity to look back at the past, UEFA is above all keen to take care of the future of the game and to ensure its continued popularity. With this goal in mind, these mini-pitches provide young people, particularly those living in built-up urban areas, with an appropriate and safe place where they can play football to their heart’s content, as previous generations used to be able to do in the street, in yards or on makeshift pitches. UEFA’s aim of making football accessible to as many as possible is also evident in its regular activities, notably by way of its grassroots programme, which has just been given fresh impetus by organisation of the 5th UEFA Grassroots Course in Norway. A tree will only produce lovely foliage if its roots are strong and healthy. EURO 2004 proved this summer that football’s foliage is thriving. Now all we have to do is to continue to take care of the roots to ensure that the greenery stays in such good condition!
