The Stanley Show
Introduction: The Stanley Show Stanley Matthews turned matter-of-factly, his stare fixed to avoid eye contact. His expression, washed of emotion, accentuated the slightly sunken, careworn look that made him appear at least as old as his thirty-two years. Time had already gone to work on his hair. It was combed back and still dark but was in the first stages of retreat. In close-up, something seemed to shadow his features, a sadness possibly pleated in the corners of his mouth. No one could have guessed that here was a man at the soaring peak of his powers who had just brought a packed arena to a ferment of excitement. As Matthews turned, gently hitching the elastic of his loose- fitting shorts on to his hips, the sellout crowd of 75,000 at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels had started to applaud. Moments earlier, England’s outside-right had completed a run that even by his standards was exceptional, bewildering Belgium’s defence and electrifying the spectators. And that was not the end of this particular piece by Matthews on a pitch made treacherous by a violent cloudburst soon after kick-off. Having wrought havoc with the ball on the turf, he dipped his head, cocked his right boot and lifted the ball over the oncoming keeper. One reporter likened it to a golf shot, Matthews seizing a wedge and lofting The Wizard pages.indd 1 23/01/2014 11:15 2 jon henderson the ball in a meticulous arc. All that was left for Tom Finney to do to collect his second goal of the match was to deflect his header into an unguarded net. -

Dear Parents: This Handbook is a means to continue the policy of open communication among faculty and staff, students and their families, as we work to provide all members of the school community with the same information. It is very important that you and your child(ren) become very familiar with the information contained in the Handbook. The regulations and guidelines are for the protection of everyone and supplement the administration’s broad discretionary powers to maintain safety, order and discipline. Students need to especially pay attention to the following sections: Absenteeism/tardy Academic Probation Cell Phone Discipline Detention/Saturday School Dress Code Drug/Alcohol/Weapons Policy Since parents are the most important influence in the life of children, it is imperative that we work together. All students enrolled in the high school must return the Handbook signature sheet and the Honor Code sheet, included in the Opening of School Packet, which indicates reading/agreement of policies in this Handbook and return it, with the necessary signatures, to their homeroom teacher by Monday, August 19. May this year be a productive and growth-filled year for your child(ren) as we work together in the Benedictine spirit of hospitality, service, scholarship and reverence. May the Spirit and presence of Jesus guide us on each step of the way in our spiritual and educational endeavors. Sincerely, Mrs. Pamela McQueen 1 MISSION STATEMENT The mission of Villa Madonna Academy is to educate students in grades K-12 for full Christian participation in 21st century life. Villa is committed to forming students who seek God in the Benedictine gradation of reverence and peace, scholarship, service and community. -

Past Transgressions Written by Steven S. DeKnight 1. FADE IN: INT. BATIATUS' VILLA - NIGHT (EP 113 SEASON 1) [NEW MATERIAL] A SWIRL OF RED fades into existence. Beautiful. Mesmerizing. We PULL BACK to reveal BLOOD spewing in slow motion as a ROMAN GUARD lazily flies through the FRAME, dying from massive wounds. RAMP TO NORMAL SPEED as he crashes to the ground, dead. THREE MORE GUARDS rush in, stepping over their fallen comrade to confront the cause of his brutal end. SPARTACUS greets them, his sword drawing fresh blood. He moves with deadly purpose, striking the Guards down in a gory display. NOBLE ROMANS scream as they rush to flee the slaughter. Spartacus ignores them, bellowing for the only man he seeks. SPARTACUS Batiatus! A threat. A challenge. A promise of impending doom... INT. TROPHY ROOM - BATIATUS' VILLA - NIGHT (EP 113 SEASON 1) [MATERIAL SHOT IN SEASON 1] Batiatus hustles through the carnage with Lucretia, Domitia, Numerius, and Aurelia. They stumble upon a dying Guard. GUARD (gurgling blood) The doors... Glaber’s men... sealed the doors... LUCRETIA (realizing) Ilithyia. DOMITIA (coming apart) Why would she do such a thing -- A Gladiator surges behind her, slicing her open in an eruption of blood. NUMERIUS Mother! (CONTINUED) 2. CONTINUED: Batiatus grabs the dead Guard’s sword and runs the Gladiator through. Batiatus rips his sword free, shouts to Lucretia and the others. BATIATUS Go! LUCRETIA Quintus -- BATIATUS GO! (Pindar) Water. There's too much of it, or too little. It's too salty, or too sweet. It wells up from the ground, carves itself a way through the land, and then it's called a river or a stream. It descends from the heavens in a variety of forms - as dew or hail, to mention just the extremes. And then, of course, there is the all-encompassing water which we call the sea, and which reminds us of the beginning of all things. The English once labelled the Netherlands across the North Sea ‘this indigested vomit of the sea’. But the Dutch went to work on that vomit, systematically and stubbornly: ‘... their tireless hands manufactured this land, / drained it and trained it and planed it and planned’ (James Brockway). As God's subcontractors they gradually became experts in living apart together. Look carefully at the first photo. The water has struck again. We're talking 1926. Gelderland. The small, stocky woman visiting the stricken province is Queen Wilhelmina. Without turning a hair she allows herself to be carried over the waters. -
