Interest in the competition will be maintained in November with the play-offs, which promise to be exciting and open, and could give the final field of participants a very interesting look indeed. After these deciders, the draw for the final round will well and truly put us on tenterhooks in anticipation of the tournament itself and the fever will continue to mount until the opening match kicks off on 12 June 2004. For the supporters of the national teams which have not managed to qualify for next year’s European Championship final round, the draw for the 2006 World Cup qualifying competition at the beginning of December will give them renewed reason to hope and dream. So, in the months ahead, national team football will be giving rise to fresh enthusiasm, as already reflected in the rush for the first tickets put on sale for the matches in Portugal. At the same time, the domestic championships will be following their course and the European club competitions will be approaching their final phases. Spain (Juanito) were There is something for every fan in this abundance of matches. And for the overtaken by Greece players, taking part in a unique event like a European Championship final in their group and now round or a prestigious competition like the UEFA Champions League is naturally have to play an exciting prospect. However, their attention has also to remain focussed Norway in the play-offs on their domestic championship, and achieving the right balance is not always to try and secure a place easy, even if the clubs have bigger squads at their disposal and despite in EURO 2004. improvements being made to the international calendar. It is therefore very important for the well-being of the players that they feel equally at ease with their club and with their national team, and that they do not feel conflict between the leaders of the two camps. National team football and club football complement one another and harmony between the two is in the true interest of the game itself. If we can achieve that balance, and understand what that means for the fans, then the football family will be acting in the long-term interests of the game. Despite moving with the times, they are, however, no longer in the best position to sort out for themselves the many problems that confront them. Corruption, money laundering, match-fixing, misplaced government interven- tion, legal disputes of various sorts, and so on, can, indeed, only be dealt with effectively if authority is clearly defined and if the status and independence of football’s governing bodies is recognised by law and they are provided with the necessary means. The Independent European Sport Review initiated by the sports ministers of the EU’s five key member states in cooperation with UEFA and FIFA is an important step in this direction. Its concludes in favour of sport being accorded a special, independent status and supports the European sport model.

  • Ethics and Sport in Europe Drugs, Extremism and Other Forms of Discrimination It Is Currently Facing
SPORTS POLICY AND PRACTICE SERIES Defending ethics in sport is vital in order to combat the problems of corruption, violence, Ethics and sport in Europe drugs, extremism and other forms of discrimination it is currently facing. Sport refl ects nothing more and nothing less than the societies in which it takes place. However, if sport is to continue to bring benefi ts for individuals and societies, it cannot afford to neglect its ethical values or ignore these scourges. The major role of the Council of Europe and the Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport (EPAS) in addressing the new challenges to sports ethics was confi rmed by the 11th Council of Europe Conference of Ministers responsible for Sport, held in Athens on 11 and 12 December 2008. A political impetus was given on 16 June 2010 by the Committee of Ministers, with the adoption of an updated version of the Code of Sports Ethics (Recommendation CM/Rec(2010)9), emphasising the requisite co-ordination between governments and sports organisations. The EPAS prepared the ministerial conference and stepped up its work in an international conference organised with the University of Rennes, which was attended by political leaders, athletes, researchers and offi cials from the voluntary sector. The key experiences described in the conference and the thoughts that it prompted are described in this publication. All the writers share the concern that the end result should be practical action – particularly in terms of the setting of standards – that falls within the remit of the EPAS and promotes the Council of Europe’s core values.

  • Brand Management Strategy for Korean Professional Football Teams
Brand Management Strategy for Korean Professional Football Teams : A Model for Understanding the Relationships between Team Brand Identity, Fans’ Identification with Football Teams, and Team Brand Loyalty A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy By Ja Joon Koo School of Engineering and Design Brunel University March 2009 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I wish to thank many individuals without whom the completion of this dissertation would not have been possible. In particular, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to my supervisor Dr. Ray Holland who has supported my research with valuable advice and assistance. I also wish to extend express thankfulness for my college Gwang Jin Na. His valuable comments were much appreciated to conduct LISREL. In addition, my special thanks go to all respondents who completed my survey. Finally, but definitely not least, I would like to give my special appreciation to my family. To my parent, thank you for their endless love and support. I thank my brother, Ja Eun for his patience and encouragement throughout this process. Especially, my lovely wife, Mee Sun and son, Bon Ho born during my project have encouraged me to complete this dissertation not to give up. I am eternally grateful to all of you. i ABSTRACT This research recommends a new approach to brand strategy for Korean professional football teams, focusing on the relationships between team brand identity as the basic element of sports team branding, team brand loyalty as the most desirable goal, and identification between fans and teams as the mediator between identity and loyalty. Nowadays, professional football teams are no longer merely sporting organisations, but organisational brands with multi-million pound revenues.
