Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Every great religious tradition and moral system is centered in one supreme value. All lesser values are subservient to and support that one supreme value. In morality, that supreme value is called Good. In religion that supreme value is called God. As moral beings, we owe ultimate allegiance to the Good. As religious people we owe ultimate commitment to God.

In our first reading from 1 Kings 3: 5, 7-12, God gave Solomon one request. No doubt Solomon thought of many possibilities – long life, good health, great wealth, great power. Any of these would have made Solomon a great man. But Solomon asked God for wisdom to rule his people wisely and well. Because Solomon put first things first, all the other things were given to him

Jesus, in today’s Gospel reading from Matthew 13: 44-46, made it clear that the Kingdom of God has to be our highest priority. Nothing else can be as valuable and important to us as our devotion to God. But that devotion includes our love for others and our care of the world. We love God through our compassion for others and our stewardship of the world.

The first of the Ten Commandments is “I am the Lord your God. You shall have no other gods before me.” God must be the focal point of our lives, or he cannot be our Good and our God. Everything falls into place if we put God at the top and ourselves at the bottom of our scale of values.

Blessings, Fr. Ray

July 24, 2011 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Is there anything worth giving up everything else for so you can obtain it? Jesus says there is. Just as the one man sold everything he had so he could buy a field that had a buried treasure, or like the merchant who disposed of all he owned so he could buy a pearl of great price, so Christ’s follower finds the Kingdom of God so valuable as to be worth more than all our other possessions. But when it comes to everyday decision-making, putting our response to God and our other duties into the right order is often difficult. After all we have responsibili- ties to bosses, family, and our communities as well. And that’s where wisdom is called for.

The young king Solomon knew, when God appeared to him in a dream, to ask for wisdom rather than riches or power. We also need to ask God for wisdom as to how best use the time, the talent, and the treasure he entrusts to us so we can fulfill all our other duties and still find the joy of obtaining the ultimate treasure, the Kingdom of God.” Copyright thecatholicsteward.com

LIVING STEWARDSHIP NOW: I am very active with the Catholics@Work ministry, serving as president for the past two years. I got involved with Catholics@Work because I wanted to close the gap between my Faith and my work. I was looking for fellowship, connectivity and support among Catholics who were also striving to grow in their spiritual journey. Catholics@work does this with a monthly breakfast speaker series at the Crow Canyon Country Club.

Past speakers have included NY Times best selling author Pat Lencioni, Hollywood Producer Steve McEvety, DaLaSalle football coach Bob Ladocuer, and we just had Father Gary Thomas, the Exorcist for the San Jose Diocese and subject of the book and movie “The Rite” to name just a few. Catholics@Work has consistently provided me with tremendous inspiration to better live my faith in the business world. ~ Atilla Bardos

THE NEW ROMAN MISSAL: The Liturgy of the Eucharist - The Preparation of the Gifts

The Liturgy of the Eucharist begins with the Preparation of Gifts. This part of the Mass is brief, and there will be only a few changes to the words when we start using the revised translation.

On Sunday’s a hymn is usually sung as the gifts are collected and the altar is prepared. Once the priest received the gifts and stands at the altar, he praises God, who has provided them. This prayer of praise is usually done in silence.

After the priest washes his hands, he invites the assembly to pray. His invitation is slightly different: “Pray brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father.” This implies that more than one sacrifice is being offered. On the one hand, the Mass is a single sacrifice offered by all present. On the other hand, each baptized member of the assembly is offering a sacrifice, in keeping with his or her priestly role. The response of the people changes with the addition of a single word: “May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church.”

The Preparation of Gifts concludes as the priest says the Prayer over the Offerings. Each of these prayers is being retranslated. The words may sound a little different, but the prayer ends the same way as the people respond, “Amen.”

Next week we will focus on the Eucharistic Prayer and the changes that occur within that prayer.

Blessings, Fr. Ray

The Adult Faith Formation Committee is doing a review of current offerings in order to plan for the future. We are assessing the status of small Christian communities at our parish, as we know many groups are out there but we do not know how many and who they are serving. If you are a part of a small Christian community/small faith sharing group, please contact Renee Bhatia at 925-309-4700 or [email protected].
