The movie is based on William Peter Blatty' s book, The Exorcist, which relates a reported experience in 1949 of a demon-possessed 14 year old boy living in Mt. Ranier, Maryland, adjacent to Washington, D. C. Blatty was a student at Georgetown University at that time and attended a series of lectures by a Jesuit R.C . priest, Franci s Galiger, who centered his lectures on a case s tudy of this 14 year old boy. Phillip Hannon, now in Orleans, was in the Washington diocese when the exorcism of the boy was originally performed. The archbishop contends that Blatty has committed a real travisty with the historical facts of the case of the exorcism.

The Canadian Catholic Conference of Bishops denounced the attestation as “unacceptable,” as did individual bishops, and Cardinal Thomas Collins of Toronto and Archbishop Terrence Prendergast of Ottawa were notably clear Catholics could not sign it. “We cannot affirm that we support a (non-existent) right to abortion, which is what the euphemism ‘reproductive rights’ means,” wrote Prendergast in January in the Ottawa Sun. https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/150-catholic-groups-sign-trudeaus-pro-abortion-pledge-some-retract 1/6 9/13/2019 150+ Catholic groups sign Trudeau’s pro-abortion pledge, some retract | News | LifeSite “We didn’t start this controversy,” Collins told Vatican Radio in February. “We’re trying to be cooperative, but we cannot check off the box.” But despite this, at least 157 identifiably Catholic groups have done just that, according to the database of Canada Summer Job grant recipients for 2018, available online for some weeks. Of these, the majority — 107, or 68 percent — are parishes, but charities, school boards, religious orders, hospitals, a day care, and care homes are also listed. Saint Francis Xavier Relic Touches Tens of Thousands, Reaches out to Millions Coast to Coast

Saint Francis Xavier relic touches tens of thousands, reaches out to millions coast to coast Ottawa, February 3, 2018 – Saint Francis Xavier’s right forearm is returning to its normal resting place in Rome after an exceptionally busy month of mission in Canada. The major relic of one of history’s most prolific and renowned international missionaries travelled to 15 Canadian cities between December 26, 2017 and February 3, 2018 as part of a visit organized by the Archdiocese of Ottawa, the Jesuits of Canada and Catholic Christian Outreach (CCO) to celebrate Canada’s 150th year and CCO’s 30th year. “The response from pilgrims across the country has been overwhelming,” says Terrence Prendergast, Archbishop of Ottawa. "Attendance at these events has been a wonderful witness of the faith in Canada and I have been touched myself by my experience of the relic.” Organizers estimate that more than 70,000 Canadians made the special pilgrimage to see, touch and pray with the sacred relic while millions more learned about the saint and the practice of veneration through headlines and news reports in media across the country. It has been a very busy month of events, and the close of the tour is especially emotional. “It’s going to be tough to say goodbye,” said D’Arcy Murphy, the guardian of the relic during its time in Canada. “Saint Francis really feels like a close friend, and the memories of this experience will stay with me for the rest of my life. It has been a very powerful month.” “It has been incredible to watch Saint Francis Xavier inspire so many Canadians in their faith,” says Angèle Regnier, co-founder of CCO.

Charting the Roles of Women in the Catholic Church

FutureChurch Charting the roles of women in the Catholic Church Current breakdown of male/female leadership in Vatican dicasteries Pope Francis has called for “a more incisive presence for women” in the Catholic Church. At the most recent Consistory of cardinals on February 12 and 13, 2015, Fr. Federico Lombardi reported that the cardinals expressed the hope of “an increasingly active role” for women. Although Pope Francis stated the door is closed on the question of ordination for women to the priesthood, he has been emphatic in his call for a stronger presence of women elsewhere. He recently appointed Sr. Mary Melone, the first women to date, to head a Pontifical University; Sr. Luzia Premoli, the first women to be appointed as a member of the Congregation on Evangelizat ion of Peoples, and has stated that women should take up positions of greater leadership within the Vatican. So how many women are in positions of leadership within the Curia? How many assert real influence? While it is difficult to accurately measure the level of influence women exercise, the chart below has been generated to further that discussion by showing the current roles women play now in Vatican congregations, pontifical councils, and other commissions, committees and offices. Secretariats, Congregations, and Pontifical Councils There are two secretariats, nine congregations and twelve pontifical councils. Below is a chart indicating the number of Vatican officials broken out in terms of male/female roles from undersecretary and above. A Day for Catechists

November 2013 A day for Catechists “Let us ask the Lord that we may all be men and women who keep the memory of God alive in ourselves, and are able to awaken it in the hearts of others.” Pope Francis – Vatican City, Concluding Mass of the World Day of Catechists, September 30, 2013 Catechists from across the Diocese of Pembroke recently gathered to not only celebrate their faith, but to learn and share with each other the common path they have taken to bring others closer to God. “This is an event for catechists to gather that the diocese is sponsoring,” explains Jason Dedo, Director of Faith Formation and Leadership Development. “It’s more of a formation day. It’s for their own reflection; to hear about some topics that would be of consequence to them working in their ministry. It’s a day for parish catechists who are working in areas of The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, working in a Family Formation program, or working with the Sacramental Initiation process for children who are preparing to celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation or the Sacrament of Reconciliation. There’s a healthy mixture of new catechists, some who have been involved for a little bit, and some who are quite seasoned.” Throughout the day, participants had an opportunity to listen to guest speakers, including Bishop Michael Mulhall. As well, catechists had an opportunity to meet and interact with their fellow catechists from a variety of parishes. More than 50 participants from across the diocese attended a catechists’ day at “In some ways, catechists in parishes may feel like they’re working in isolation,” Most Holy Name of Jesus in Pembroke.
