Preliminary key to the genus-group taxa G. THEISCHINGER Abstract: The genus-group taxa of the Australian Limoniinae are keyed, with relevant characters illustrated. Introduction Until now, a key to the genera and subgenera of the Australian Limoniinae has not been available. Therefore, since starting to study this group of crane flies in 1988. I have been asked repeatedly by Australian biologists and by overseas tipulid specialists to provide such a key. After having revised several genera and having sorted most of the Australian Limo- niinae available in collections, I am now in a position to present a preliminary key to the genus-group taxa. I am particularly glad about the timing of the key's appearance, as it is coincident with a forthcoming project on the larvae of the Australian Tipulidae. Apart from filling a gap, the preliminary key below should facilitate this and other projects in their infant stages and will possibly benefit from them later. It should be noted again that besides the one-family concept of Tipulidae which was followed throughout his career by Alexander, which was recently seconded by BYERS (1992) and which is followed in this paper, an alternative multi-family system of crane flies is presently being used and has been used for some time by tipulid workers, par- ticularly in Europe. -

He later lived and worked in the former Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in southern Africa, where he was employed as an economic entomologist. Accounts are provided of his early years, development of his interest in Diptera, and the impact he had on dipterology in the region. Although he died at an early age his contributions were, nevertheless, substantial. Introduction Alexander Cuthbertson (Fig. 1) came from a working-class background in the Clyde shipbuilding industry and presents an example of how a highly intelligent and diligent boy went to college and developed a career in his chosen profession. -

Seven species belonging to the subgenus Ceratocheilus Wesche are recognized, of which three species, T. (C.) huanglica sp. n., T. (C.) omnifusca sp. n. and T. (C.) univirgata sp. n., are described as new to science, T. (C.) fuscolimbata Alexander is recorded from China for the first time, and three known species are redescribed and illustrated. Its detailed features for the recognition are given by Osten Sacken (1869) and Alexander (1947). The genus is well defined by the elongate rostrum which is longer than head and thorax combined together. -

Ar,EXANDER MASSACHUSETTS STATE COLLEGE DISTRIBUTION The Oceanic islands here considered are Hawaii, the Galapagos, Juan Fernandez, the Marquesas, Society Islands, Austral Islands, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, New Hebrides, New Caledonia, Solomon Islands, Marshall Islands, Caroline Islands, and the Marianas, to ge~er with a multitude of small and isolated islands within the same circumference. Islands and groups of islands lying as immedi ate satellites of great land masses, as New Guinea with New Britain and certain smaller islands, Australia with Lord Howe and Norfolk islands, and New Zealand with the Kermadec, Chatham, and Sub antarctic islands, are omitted. The inclusion of Australia and New Zealand would add nearly 1,200 species of Tipulidae to the present list. New Guinea is still so insufficiently known as regards its tipulid fauna that any indication of its possibilities would be surmise only. It was formerly believed that the crane fly fauna of the more remote Pacific islands was greatly reduced in number of species. This statement still seems· to hold true for the lowlands, but the higher mountains of many of the islands are now known to support a relatively rich tipulid fauna that is entirely endemic.
