Abstract ‘Presence in the world vigorously implies the positing of a body that is both a thing of the world and a point of view on this world’ - Simone de Beauvoir 1 This thesis will use works by two Modernist and two contemporary authors - Virginia Woolf and Katherine Mansfield, and Jeanette Winterson and Ali Smith respectively - to test Simone de Beauvoir’s hypothesis. Each chapter will focus upon one of these au- thors, and will explore representations of the interior and exterior worlds of female characters to see whether these elements can ever be separated, and what the implica- tions of this would be. I will also examine gender, sexuality, femininity, and the differ- ing ways in which a body can be presented, as well as the multiplicity of self. Introduction Thesis Aims This thesis will use works by two modernist and two contemporary authors - Virginia Woolf and Katherine Mansfield, and Jeanette Winterson and Ali Smith respectively - to test Simone de Beauvoir’s above statement. I have taken the decision to split my thesis into four separate chapters, which interlink in terms of the themes and authors dis- cussed. The chosen structure of chapters within this thesis is distinct, and each focuses upon a single author in turn. Throughout, I will discuss the implications of Beauvoir’s above quotation, and explore whether representations of select female characters de- picted in selected books by Woolf, Mansfield, Smith, and Winterson exist as ‘both a thing of the world, and a point of view on this world’. Each chapter will be devoted to ex- ploring the interior and corporeal bodies of selected female characters, ultimately test- ing whether Beauvoir’s quotation runs true in these works of literature, or whether these elements can be separated. The ideas of literary relevance which are so prevalent in The Second Sex can be found in each of my chosen texts. I will look variously at gen- der, sexuality, femininity, and the differing ways in which a body can be viewed through- out my chosen primary texts. The continual focus of this thesis will be Beauvoir’s statement, and consequently, I will be looking at the body as a physical object, as well as the variety of ‘point[s] of view’ which are demonstrated in my chosen texts. I will constantly keep in mind the idea of ‘both’ of these things coexisting in each particular character I focus upon, and will consequently examine and argue whether the body and mind can be portrayed as separate things, or whether they are largely reliant upon one another. 5! Whilst Beauvoir’s quotation does not relate to one particular sex, it was important to limit what I was looking at within this thesis. If I had included books by male authors as well as female, and discussed male characters alongside female ones, the scope would arguably have been too broad, and I would not have been able to give each sepa- rate work the attention which it deserves in such a discussion. As The Second Sex con- siders female experience, a female focused project thus seemed fitting. I will focus solely upon female characters, written by female authors, in order to explore female experience. I identify female as those characters who are clearly biologically gendered, as well as those who identify as female. I have also identified a genderless character whom I will discuss in depth, the protagonist of Winterson’s Written on the Body. The gender fluidity of Woolf’s Orlando will also be discussed. I shall analyse the work of these authors, exploring the ways in which they pro- mote female material embodiment. I will concentrate upon identifying and exploring instances in which the physical body and point of view are shown as both acting simulta- neously with one another, as in Beauvoir’s quotation, as well as ways in which they are separated, however briefly, and thus go against her statement. I have chosen to explore the material body and materiality of the body, as per Beauvoir’s statement, and the many ways in which this is presented. I will also be exploring the differences and over- lap between ‘point of view’ and the mind, or interior world. All of these terms demon- strate the interconnectivity of one’s inner, hidden life, and will be used interchangeably throughout this thesis. They have different connotations, of course, but ‘point of view’ and perspective are manifested in one’s mind, and thus I feel that the decision to use all three terms can be substantiated. I wish to examine, if Beauvoir’s hypothesis is true, how literature and literary lan- guage confront this. Do my selected texts portray the quite complex relation between the mind and the body, and if so, how is this expressed? 6! Bound up with my exploration of the female-gendered mind and perspective is, as per Beauvoir’s quotation, the exterior body. I will discuss ways in which the tangible body is presented in my chosen texts, and how, if at all, it relates to the mind of a given female character. Interiority is arguably more truthful, given that the exterior expres- sion of feelings can be obscured or hidden by the performer. The mind and perspective are intrinsically linked to the exterior body, although I am fully expecting there to be instances in the literary texts which I am discussing which go against this, providing a different exposure entirely to what might be expected. I will provide evidence of the ways in which the female body and point of view cooperate, or not, in my chosen texts. The books which I have chosen to discuss are Orlando (1928), To the Lighthouse (1927), and Between the Acts (1941) by Woolf; ‘Prelude’ (1918), ‘Pictures (1917), and ‘Bliss’ (1918) by Mansfield; Lighthousekeeping (2004) and Written on the Body (1992) by Winterson; and ‘The ex-wife’ and ‘The human claim’ by Smith, both of which were pub- lished in The Public Library and Other Stories in 2015. I will examine the ways in which my contemporary authors echo and extend the work of my chosen modernists, as well as the effects of autofiction, and the notions of selfhood, the reclamation of self, trans- formation, ‘Other’ness, and dream states.

The historical debate found its most heated moment in the seventeenth century between Rene Descartes and Benedict De Spinoza; the rst advocating for the superiority of the mind over the body, and the latter with his characteristic Monist view framing the mind and body as one same substance. While it seemed that Descartes had won the debate, developments in neuroscience have been weighing towards the spinozistic conception. However, the feminine perspective had been largely ignored until Simone de Beauvoir published her seminal book in 1949. Feminists since then have had a conicting relationship with the earlier debates, yet Spinoza’s work, with its materialist framework, seems to be holding steady ground within the contemporary feminist movement. For instance, Spinoza’s ontology is used as framework to discuss feminism (anarcha-feminism) in the text by Chiara Bottici, “Bodies in Plural: Towards an anarcha-feminist manifesto.” But this reliance on the dead white man as a means to parse through feminist issues poses some interesting questions, chief among them: can a white male from the seventeenth century provide any openings to thinking about the very contemporary problematics of women’s issues in the twentyrst century? In The Second Sex De Beauvoir writes explicitly about the female body, about the physical cycles it undergoes: menstruation, pain, blood.

    John Halperin ., I Bloomsbury and Virginia WooH: Another VIew . i· "It had seemed to me ever since I was very young," Adrian Stephen wrote in The Dreadnought Hoax in 1936, "that anyone who took up an attitude of authority over anyone else was necessarily also someone who offered a leg to pull." 1 In 1910 Adrian and his sister Virginia and Duncan Grant and some of their friends dressed up as the Emperor of Abyssinia and his suite and perpetrated a hoax upon the Royal Navy. They wished to inspect the Navy's most modern vessel, they said; and the Naval officers on hand, completely fooled, took them on an elaborate tour of some top­ secret facilities aboard the HMS Dreadnought. When the "Dread­ nought Hoax," as it came to be called, was discovered, there were furious denunciations of the group in the press and even within the family, since some Stephen relations were Naval officers. One of them wrote to Adrian: "His Majesty's ships are not suitable objects for practical jokes." Adrian replied: "If everyone shared my feelings toward the great armed forces of the world, the world [might] be a happier place to live in . .. armies and suchlike bodies [present] legs that [are] almost irresistible." Earlier a similarly sartorial practical joke had been perpetrated by the same group upon the mayor of Cam­ bridge, but since he was a grocer rather than a Naval officer the Stephen family seemed unperturbed by this-which was not really a thumbing·of-the-nose at the Establishment. The Dreadnought Hoax was harder to forget.

    Chapter One Towards a Feminist Reading The advent of feminism as a global and revolutionary ideology has brought into the field of literary criticism new critical outlooks and modes of exegesis. The practice of reading of any literary text has become a site in the struggle for change in gender relations that prevail in society. A reading that is feminist aims at asking such rudimentary questions: how the text defines sexual questions, what it says about gender relations and how it represents women. In other words, feminist reading/criticism has come to be recognized as a political discourse: a critical and theoretical practice committed to the struggle against patriarchy and sexism. The influential feminist critic, Elaine Showalter points out that two factors - gender and politics- which are suppressed in the dominant models of reading gain prominence with the advent of a feminist perspective. In every area of critical reflection whether it is literary representations of sexual difference or the molding/shaping of literary genres by masculine values feminist criticism has established gender as a fundamental category of literary analysis. With ,gender as a tool of literary interpretation the issue of silencing of the female voice in the institutions of literature, criticism and theory has also come to the forefront. Appreciating the widespread importance of gender, feminist philosophers resist speaking in gender-neutral voice. They value women's experiences, interest, and seek to shift the position of women from object to one of subject and agent. 1 Moreover, it has been an important function of feminist criticism to redirect attention to personal and everyday experience of alienation and oppression of women (as reflected in literary texts).

    216 TWENTIETH·CENTURY LITERARY THEORY 43 ElAINE SHOWALTER: 'TOWARDS A FEMINIST POETICS' Feminist criticism can be divided into two distinct varieties. The first type is concerned with woman as reader - with woman as the con­ sumer of male-produced literature, and with the way in which the hypothesis of a female reader changes our apprehension of a given text, awakening us to the significance of its sexual codes. I shall call this kind of analysis the feminist critique, and like other kinds of critique it is a historically grounded inquiry which probes the ideo­ logical assumptions of literary phenomena. Its subjects include the images and stereotypes of women in literature, the omissions and misconceptions about women in criticism, and the fissures in male­ constructed literary history. It is also concerned with the exploita­ tion and manipulation of the female audience, especially in popular culture and film; and with the analysis of woman-as-sign in semiotic systems. The second type of feminist criticism is concerned with woman as writer - with woman as the producer of textual meaning, with the history, themes, genres and structures of literature by women. Its subjects include the psychodynamics of female creativity; linguistics and the problem of a female language; the trajectory of the individual or collective female literary career; literary history; and, of course, studies of particular writers and works. No term exists in English for such a specialised discourse, and so I have adapted the French term la gynocritique: 'gynocritics' (although the significance of the male pseudonym in the history of women's writing also suggested the term 'georgics').

My endeavor is occasioned by the nature of the misreadings following from that premise: on one hand, those that see Woolf's feminism as compromised by her perceived endorsement of "androgyny"; on the other, those that embrace "androgyny" as a viable approach to femal e authority. In particular, I take issue with the obviation of the narrative frames of A Room of One's own required to sustain such readings.

    1 Lori Marso, Union College Simone de Beauvoir’s The Second Sex Comments presented at: A Revolutionary Moment: Women's Liberation in the late 1960s and early 1970s A conference organized by the Women's, Gender, & Sexuality Studies Program Boston University, March 27-29, 2014 Please do not circulate or cite without permission from the author: [email protected] Since its publication in 1949, reception of The Second Sex has been ambivalent and fraught with emotion. Listen to how Beauvoir describes early response to the book in her 1963 autobiography, Force of Circumstance: “Unsatisfied, frigid, priapic, nymphomaniac, lesbian, a hundred times aborted, I was everything, even an unmarried mother. People offered to cure me of my frigidity or to temper my labial appetites; I was promised revelations, in the coarsest terms but in the name of the true, the good and the beautiful, in the name of health and even of poetry, all unworthily trampled underfoot by me” (FC, 197). Beauvoir goes on for several pages documenting violent and aggressive reactions to her book. In an opposing stance, also emotional and deeply ambivalent, Beauvoir was cast as the “mother” of feminism, a label she disavowed in a 1974 interview remarking that “mother-daughter relations are generally catastrophic” (Schwarzer, 94) and “people don’t tend to listen to what their mothers are telling them” (Patterson, 92). Her text has also been called “the feminist bible” even though Beauvoir herself was an atheist (Thurman, xii). Over half a decade later, the text still solicits powerful reactions. Reviewing the new 2010 translation in the New York Times, Francine du Plessix Gray says: “Beauvoir’s truly paranoid hostility toward the 2 institutions of marriage and motherhood — another characteristic of early feminism — is so extreme as to be occasionally hilarious.” She goes on to say that “pessimism runs through the text like a poisonous river” while reassuring us that Beauvoir did not hate men (Plessix-Gray, 2010).
