    MEDIA RELEASE ABORIGINAL FEMINIST, CELESTE LIDDLE IN CANBERRA TO DISCUSS WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP Date: 14 August 2017 This Wednesday 16 August, Arrernte woman, renowned Aboriginal feminist, unionist, and social commentator, Celeste Liddle will talk women’s leadership at the University of Canberra’s Ann Harding Centre. This is the third event in YWCA Canberra’s She Leads In-Conversation series, to be emceed by Wiradjuri woman and YWCA Canberra Vice President, Sarah Burr. The conversation will highlight the leadership challenges that Aboriginal women continue to face in our communities, society and workplaces, and point to solutions for the future. Ms Burr says the unique voices and experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women are largely absent from mainstream conversations about feminism and equality, and this must be addressed in order to make meaningful progress. “Celeste and I share a profound appreciation for First Nations feminism, and I look forward to the opportunity to hear her thoughts on what it means to be an Aboriginal feminist, and how this contradicts and intersects with more western ideals” Ms Burr said. Frances Crimmins, Executive Director of YWCA Canberra added that it is crucial that conversations about gender equality and women in leadership are inclusive, diverse, and accessible to all members of the community. “Understanding the challenges and barriers to leadership that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women face is an important step towards achieving gender equality and women’s empowerment. “This event celebrates the voices of Aboriginal women leaders in our community, who are still suppressed in public discourse today,” Ms Crimmins said.

Why do we need to reconsider it now? I then begin to develop a new analysis of the question of the woman writer by turning to the statement ‘I am not a woman writer’. By treating it as a speech act and analysing it in the light of Simone de Beauvoir’s understanding of sexism, I show that it is a response to a particular kind of provocation, namely an attempt to force the woman writer to conform to some norm for femininity. I also show that Beauvoir’s theory illuminates Virginia Woolf’s strategies in A Room of One’s Own before, finally, asking why we, today, still should want women to write. keywords J. L. Kenner and Petras limited themselves to mentioning the enormous importance of a Cuban Revolution with which a great number of the North American New Left identified. They also dedicated their book to the Cuban and Vietnamese people for “giving North Americans the possibility of making a revolution” (1972: 5). 3. For an explanation of the term gauchiste and of its relevance to the New Left, see chapter six. 4. However, this consideration has been rather critical in the case of Minogue (1970). 5. The general consensus seems to be that, as the Revolution entered a period of rapid Sovietization following the failure of the ten million ton sugar harvest of 1970, Western intellectuals, who until then had showed support, sought to distance themselves from the Revolution. The single incident that seemingly sparked this reaction, in particular from some French intellectuals, was the Padilla Affair. 6. Here a clear distinction must be made mainly between the Communist Party of the pre-Revolutionary period, the Partido Socialista Popular (Popular Socialist Party) and the 26 July Movement (MR26). The former had a legacy of Popular Frontism, collaboration with Batista in the post- War period and a general distrust of “middle class adventurers” as it referred to the leadership of MR26 until 1958 (Karol, 1971: 150). The latter, led by Castro, had a radical though incoherently articulated ideo- logical basis. The process of unification of revolutionary organizations carried out between 1961 and 1965 did not completely obliterate the individuality of these competing discourses and it was in their struggle for supremacy that the New Left’s contribution was made.

    60th Annual Conference 1 - 3 July 2019 Royal Holloway, University of London Welcome and acknowledgments On behalf of the Society for French Studies, I am delighted to welcome all of you to our Annual Conference, this year hosted by Royal Holloway, University of London. Today's Royal Holloway is formed from two colleges, founded by two social pioneers, Elizabeth Jesser Reid and Thomas Holloway. We might note with some pleasure that they were among the first places in Britain where women could access higher education. Bedford College, in London, opened its doors in 1849, and Royal Holloway College's stunning Founder's Building was unveiled by Queen Victoria in 1886 – it’s still the focal point of the campus, and we shall gather there for a reception on Tuesday evening. In 1900, the colleges became part of the University of London and in 1985 they merged to form what is now known as Royal Holloway. We hope that this year’s offerings celebrate the full range of French Studies, and pay tribute to the contribution that is made more widely to Arts and Humanities research by the community of students and scholars who make up our discipline. We are especially pleased to welcome delegates attending the Society’s conference for the first time, as well as the many postgraduate students who will be offering papers and posters and colleagues from around the world.     Parisian Noir Kristin Ross riting in 1993, at the height of the “spatial turn” in cultural analysis, Rosalyn Deutsche drew our attention to the way in Wwhich the figure of the urban theorist—her examples are Edward Soja and Mike Davis—had merged with that of the private eye in noir fiction and film. Given that the city is both scene and object of noir investigation, she commented, the analogy between the detective’s disinterested search for the hidden truth of the city and the urban scholar’s critique of the capitalist city practically suggests itself.1 Deutsche does not go so far as to explicitly base her case on the centrality of one city—Los Angeles—to both the urban theory then being produced by Soja and Davis and a noir tradition that includes Raymond Chandler and Chinatown. Yet if the analogy works so seamlessly, it clearly has something to do with the way it springs unbidden from the set of representations, both written and figured, that make up an imaginary particular to Los Angeles. And it is also because an earlier subterranean migration between the two figures—a transfer of practices and point of view—had already laid the groundwork for an understanding of the detective himself as a kind of geographer, engaged in the mapping of social space. The detective as social geographer emerged in early essays by Fredric Jameson, writing about Chandler.2 The spatial paradigm provided by the meeting of Jameson, Chandler and the urban particularities of Los Angeles has largely overdetermined the way in which we read detective fiction.

The impetus behind this was to investigate taken for granted assumptions about who harassers are, what they do online, and how they do it. To begin, I highlight the discourse of online harassment of women in scholarship and online-news media, discussing the assumptions made about who is harassing and why. I discuss the lack of consideration of multi-layered harassment and argue for more research that takes into consideration the intersectionality of harassing content, and the experiences of all women online. I provide an overview of online methodologies and of feminism on the internet. I then undertake an investigation into harassers behind online harassment of women, and find trends in user profiles, user behaviour, and in online communication patterns more broadly. I discuss how researching this topic affected me personally, reflecting on the impact of viewing high amounts abusive content. My findings challenged many of the assumptions initially identified, so, with that in mind, I provide a discussion of why such assumptions are problematic. I argue that such assumptions contribute to a discourse that homogenizes harassment and harassers, and overlooks broader internet-specific behaviours.

    Chapter One Towards a Feminist Reading The advent of feminism as a global and revolutionary ideology has brought into the field of literary criticism new critical outlooks and modes of exegesis. The practice of reading of any literary text has become a site in the struggle for change in gender relations that prevail in society. A reading that is feminist aims at asking such rudimentary questions: how the text defines sexual questions, what it says about gender relations and how it represents women. In other words, feminist reading/criticism has come to be recognized as a political discourse: a critical and theoretical practice committed to the struggle against patriarchy and sexism. The influential feminist critic, Elaine Showalter points out that two factors - gender and politics- which are suppressed in the dominant models of reading gain prominence with the advent of a feminist perspective. In every area of critical reflection whether it is literary representations of sexual difference or the molding/shaping of literary genres by masculine values feminist criticism has established gender as a fundamental category of literary analysis. With ,gender as a tool of literary interpretation the issue of silencing of the female voice in the institutions of literature, criticism and theory has also come to the forefront. Appreciating the widespread importance of gender, feminist philosophers resist speaking in gender-neutral voice. They value women's experiences, interest, and seek to shift the position of women from object to one of subject and agent. 1 Moreover, it has been an important function of feminist criticism to redirect attention to personal and everyday experience of alienation and oppression of women (as reflected in literary texts).
