The chief welcomes the heroes, having summoned them to his hall immediately upon his return from a meeting with King Kangharl and other tribal leaders at Clearwine Fort. Gordangar is visibly angry, and still caked in dust and mud from his travels. Gesturing, the chief says: “Evil plans are being brewed in Clearwine. The king intends to break the oaths of my father to a loyal thane of the House of Sartar. My father promised to protect Gringle; we Orlmarthings will not foreswear our ancestor’s oaths! I want you to ride immediately to Apple Lane and warn Gringle Goodsell that the king has proclaimed him outside of tribal protection and that an attack on him has been planned.” Questions and Answers The heroes are likely to have questions such as: Who is Gringle? “Gringle is a rich trader and an old friend of the kingdom of Sartar. He loans silver to kings, chiefs, merchants and heroes who pledge valuable goods and items as security. He is very old and was old when my father was king. Gringle belongs to no clan and has no family – only his friends, most of whom are dead now. This is my first attempt to write for others and what makes sense in my head did not always translate well when I wrote it down. As a result, I must give special thanks to Nikolas Lloyd better known perhaps by his YouTube handle – Lindybeige, for agreeing to critique this before publishing. Look him up for a plethora of informational videos, many of which touch on subjects dear to a certain bronze age fantasy role playing game. And to my much suffering wife Joanne, who drives word software way better than I do. Applefest is a work of fiction. All the characters created for Applefest are similarly fictitious and any familiarity with real people, living or dead, is purely coincidental… except maybe Groucho the catfish… he did seem familiar at the time of writing. • I Am, As Ever, Indebted to Visionaries Such As Greg Stafford and Sandy Petersen for the Inspiration to Throw out My DMG and Do My Own Thing
I am, as ever, indebted to visionaries such as Greg Stafford and Sandy Petersen for the inspiration to throw out my DMG and do my own thing. Somehow, however, I circle back to RuneQuest every time. The idea for this scenario broke at the same time as covid hit us. I made a flippant comment on a RQ page online that I had accidently written a scenario about a Malian priest with nineteen broo followers… I’m calling her Kovid. Someone else suggested that I publish it on Jonstown Compendium. Much editing and re-jiggering later, here it is. Her name really isn’t important though as you’ll find out if you read on. Thanks to my ex-employers for making me redundant and giving me the time to write this up and to my wife for forcing me to build an office in the house that made writing this so much easier. The art in this one is either mine or by Mike Hudson, you can tell which is which, his are the good ones. • Arrows of War
Arrows of War A mini scenario by Martin Helsdon Sample file Author’s Notes: This scenario was originally published in a slightly different form on the basicroleplaying.org forum and titled War in Winter. The name has changed to prevent confusion with another scenario published in the Jonstown Compendium. This is a mini-scenario for the RuneQuest Colymar Campaign, set a week before the events of THE DRAGON OF THE THUNDER HILLS. It involves the players as participants in the defense of Sartar in the face of another Lunar assault, and provides them with events in which less commonly used skills may be applied. Though they are distant bystanders to the Battle of Dangerford, this mini-scenario is intended to introduce aspects of Glorantha that will be important as the Hero Wars progress. The GM is free to add events and characters of their own invention. For anyone wishing more information about Gloranthan warfare, and Orlanthi traditions in particular, the reader is referred to The Armies and Enemies of Dragon Pass by the same author. For GMs seeking more information about the Eleven Lights, the HeroQuest scenario book The Eleven Lights by Ian Cooper provides details about this magical regiment. The settlement of Runegate is detailed in the HeroQuest volume the Sartar Companion by Jeff Richard. It is likely that this settlement will be covered by a future official RuneQuest book.
