On August 26, 1970, thousands of women in cities across the country thronged the streets in celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the ratification of the suffrage amendment, the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which granted women the right to vote. The Women’s Strike for Equality march, one of the largest demonstrations for women’s rights in U.S. history, represented a new era in the history of women’s reform in which long-standing assumptions about men and women would crumble and institutions, laws, and policies would be redesigned to reflect a new gender order. The 1920 passage of the Nineteenth Amendment also marked a turning point in women’s history, although voting rights for African American women in the southern states would not be secured until the 1965 Voting Rights Act ended almost a century of black male and female disenfranchisement in that region. <A>Women’s Political Power in the Wake of the Nineteenth Amendment Winning the constitutional right to vote for the vast majority of American women was a milestone in the history of women’s political citizenship. Yet women voted in several states before 1920, when full political rights for women, including equal access to officeholding and representation in the two major political parties and in government, were far from secure. Africa at LSE: Book Review: Ellen Johnson Sirleaf by Pamela Scully Page 1 of 3 Book Review: Ellen Johnson Sirleaf by Pamela Scully In scarcely 100 short pages, this excellent addition to the Ohio Short Histories of Africa series offers a valuable perspective on Liberia’s outgoing President, and Africa’s first elected female Head of State. With its small size yet wide scope, it sometimes reads less as a biography of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, and more as a potted history of the Republic of Liberia from the American Colonization Society to the Ebola crisis. It is none the worse for that, writes Calum Fisher. Notwithstanding heady talk of a “biographical turn,” biographical methods and approaches remain marginal amongst professional historians and certainly social scientists. Pamela Scully’s book seems pitched to straddle the academic/popular divide and as such skilfully demonstrates not only the “accessibility” but also the scholarly value of biography. With the life of President Sirleaf serving as a thread throughout (albeit a near-vanishing one at times), the author surveys the modern history of Liberia with admirable economy and insight, and finds many of the dilemmas and contradictions of the country’s past and present embodied in her subject. Ellen Johnson was born, in 1938, deep within the elite social milieu and intersectional privileges of Americo-Liberian Monrovia. She grew up on the same street as the all- important US embassy; her father was active in politics and in the government of President William Tubman (1944-1971); her mother ran an elementary school, and was a preacher in the Presbyterian churches associated with elite society. -

A fines del siglo X V I I I , después de tres siglos de dominio imperial, Hispanoamérica aún encontraba en su madre patria un reflejo de sí misma, ya que si las colonias exportaban materias primas, lo mismo hacía España; si las colonias dependían de una marina mercante extranjera, lo mismo sucedía en España; si las colonias eran dominadas por una élite señorial, sin tendencia al ahorro y a la inversión, lo mismo ocurría en España. Pero, por otro lado, las dos economías diferían en una actividad, ya que las colo- nias producían metales preciosos y la metrópoli no. Sin embargo, a pesar de existir esta excepcional división del trabajo, ésta no beneficiaba directamente a España. He aquí un caso extraño en la historia moderna: una economía colonial depen- diente de una metrópoli subdesarrollada. Durante la segunda mitad del siglo xvm, la España borbónica hizo balance de sí misma y buscó la manera de modernizar su economía, sociedad e instituciones. About this #SuffrageSyllabus Suffrage Pin, c. 1910s, Memorabilia Collection, Schlesinger Library, Radcliffe Institute, Harvard University This syllabus, part of the Schlesinger Library’s Long 19th Amendment Project, takes students through a semester-long course of readings and assignments on the broad subject of women’s political rights in the United States. Organized around a series of turning-point moments from the creation of the independent nation in 1776 to the present day, the syllabus places American women’s still-unfinished struggle for full and equal citizenship in a broad intersectional context. The effort to build this #syllabus began with an open call on social media by the unit creators and Johns Hopkins historian Martha Jones, who has been instrumental in many parts of the Long 19th Amendment Project. Many responded to that call; Cathleen Cahill, Mary Chapman, Andrew Cohen, and Beverly Palmer contributed particular ideas that directly shaped the result. We have cast a wide net in the topics, readings, and approaches outlined in this course, which has meant making hard choices about coverage and content. We hope that individual instructors will adapt as well as adopt this syllabus, diving deeper into particular questions and creating alternative frameworks for exploration. Such an inquiry could begin almost anywhere; women in many parts of the world have fought for their emancipation since antiquity. During the early modern period, a lively print debate on “the woman question” raged in Western Europe, producing foundational texts that later women’s rights thinkers built on. From the age of revolutions forward, those advocating for the rights of women often allied with thinkers and activists seeking the abolition of slavery.
