If Cuvier 1797 was not first, then probably type was designated by Bory de Saint-Vincent, v. 9, 1826:291 [ref. 3853] on Lacepède (see Whitley 1935:137 [ref. 6396]). Jordan 1917:28 [ref. 2407] says type is L. gouani = Trichiurus caudatus.
