Personal Statement I am first-year master’s student at Utah State University pursing a MS in Environment and Society. I recently graduated from the in May 2017 with a B.S. in Geology and a graduate certificate in GIS. I am passionate about mitigating the effects of climate change through the development of sustainable communities and adoption of renewable energy standards. I am also interested in exploring how human attitudes and behaviors toward the environment affect the success of environmental policies at a local level.

University of Dayton, Dayton, OH Advisor: Dr. Bob Brecha Undergraduate Senior Research Project September 2016- May 2017 • Title: Understanding Climate Change in Dayton, OH to Create a More Sustainable City • This project examines the localized physical and social impacts of climate change on the City of Dayton. A survey was designed with the intention of analyzing what citizens from Dayton’s neighborhoods understand about climate change and sustainable behaviors. The intention of the survey was to identify knowledge gaps about climate change and sustainable behaviors from the responses so that environmental education programs could be designed to address the needs of the community. Due to time constraints, the survey was not conducted but was instead proposed as an undergraduate projected for the sustainability course SEE 402.

Field Work New Zealand via University of Dayton Department of Geology: Field Geology (GEO 303) Intersession 2016 • Paleoclimate analysis of stratigraphy at Cape Kidnappers and Darkey Spur Outcrop • Examined and calculated estimated ice loss of retreating glaciers in the Southern Alps using ArcGIS • Analysis and interpretation of Fox, Franz Josef, Mueller, Tasman, and Hooker Glaciers in the Southern Alps

University of Dayton, Dayton, OH Department of Geology: Environmental Instrumentation Lab (GEO 479L) A Hydrologic Investigation of Silver Lake and the Surrounding Wetlands Fall 2015 • Interpreted geologic setting of lake and created a detailed cross section of the area via computer drawing programs • Measured water quality from well drilling samples, lake samples, and samples of nearby springs that contributed to the influx of water to lake • Identified the water source for the lake, determined water velocity, and calculated average inflow and outflow of water • Used Modflow to create a groundwater flow diagram that also depicted different resistances of rock layers • Summary of information could be expanded upon to create a proactive plan that predicts and solves contamination issues to reduce the severity of possible toxic spills on the hydrologic system in this area

Professional Experience University of Dayton: Department of Geology, Idaho Springs, CO Field Camp Manager July 2017- August 2017 • Budgeted food, transportation, lodging, and site visit expenses for 14 people throughout a three-week period • Worked with faculty to foster a positive, healthy, and collaboratively productive living- learning environment • Purchased and prepared meals and managed a cabin cleaning schedule throughout the duration of the field camp

University of Dayton: Hanley Sustainability Institute (HSI), Dayton, OH Fellow October 2016- July 2017 • Wrote, recorded, produced, and edited 6 short videos that educate UD students on how to be sustainable on campus • Designed and worked along UD's professional videography crew to create a video that exemplifies the efforts UD has made to become a sustainable university and the sustainability culture that exists on campus. • Created a peer-led sustainability training program for undergraduates at UD that educates the students on sustainable water, energy, and waste habits. Leadership Experience University of Dayton, Dayton, OH Student Government Association (SGA) Sustainability Chair Sept. 2015- May. 2016 • Formed a sustainability committee to assist with projects • Created and successfully passed a resolution that called upon students, faculty, and staff at UD to make sustainable choices and listed specific ways in which they could do so • Designed and conducted a survey to gather student knowledge on composting to improve UD’s composting program. 477 responses were collected and analyzed. Findings were presented to the Environmental Manager of Facilities, Department of New Student Programs, and Department of Housing and Residence Life. • Redesigned trash, recycling, and composting labels to improve bin labeling and deter students from placing recyclable and compostable items in the bin labeled “Landfill”- designs are waiting approval from Facilities Management
