UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON

The origins of the University of Dayton date to 1850, when members of the Society of Mary (Marianists) purchased a hilltop farm a short distance outside the growing town of Dayton, Ohio and established a small school for boys, known first as St. Mary’s Institute and later as St. Mary’s College. The school continued to grow and became the University of Dayton in 1920. In 1935, women were admitted as full- time students, 40 years ahead of many other Catholic universities. The mission of the school evolved as it grew into being a fully accredited, comprehensive university.

Today, UD is recognized as a top ten Catholic institution of higher learning and a top tier Catholic . As a Marianist university, UD strives to educate for formation in faith; provide an integral, quality education; educate in family spirit; educate for service, justice, peace, and integrity of creation; and educate for adaptation and change. These core educational values have guided the university as it has grown, redefined itself, and achieved remarkable success over more than a century and a half. It is deeply committed to pursuing diversity, equity, and inclusion within a shared mission, building consensus, and fulfilling its founding vision of educating the whole person through the integration of learning and scholarship with leadership and service. The institution’s hallmark is learning that spans the boundaries of the liberal arts and the professions integrating theory and practice. The aim is to create reciprocal, mutually beneficial relationships in the greater community that provide meaningful learning experiences for students, strengthen civic life, and spark community engaged scholarship. UD’s culture is characterized by a strong commitment to collegiality and inclusivity; excellence in service to students, stakeholders, and professional societies; and impactful research.

The University of Dayton comprises six academic units: the College of Arts and Sciences and the Schools of Business Administration, Education and Health Sciences, Engineering, Law, and University Libraries. More than 82 academic programs are available at the undergraduate level. More than 35 centers and institutes, including the nationally recognized University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI), provide faculty, students, and staff with tremendous opportunities for research, experiential learning, and community engagement. In 2015 the University received the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification, recognizing the institution’s long-standing commitment to community engagement through teaching, service, research, and partnerships within the Dayton community. These partnerships allow UD faculty, staff, and students to successfully collaborate with neighbors for shared community building, to create learning opportunities beyond the classroom for students, and to connect theory with practice. Master’s degrees and doctoral programs are offered in a range of liberal arts disciplines. Additionally, graduate degree programs are offered within the Schools of Business Administration, Education and Health Sciences, Engineering, and Law. In addition, UD supports many centers that provide a variety of distinctive programs and opportunities. Across all programs, faculty and staff are committed to providing students with excellent classroom and off-campus experiences, and value the inclusive, consultative leadership style that is the tradition at the university. UD has more than 670 full-time faculty members (432 tenured/tenure-track; 241 non tenure-track), 350 part-time faculty, and 2,006 full-time staff members.

UD has experienced substantial growth in enrollment, research expenditures, and philanthropic support in recent years. The university currently serves approximately 11,650 students including more than 8,300 full-time undergraduates. The average SAT score for the entering class of 2020 was 1193; the average ACT score was 25.6, and 85 percent of the entering class were in the top 50 percent of their high school graduating classes. In 2020, approximately 49 percent of all enrolled undergraduate students were Ohio residents, with an additional 46 percent coming from other states. International students comprise approximately nine percent of the total student population. In the first-year entering class in August 2020, 21 percent of the students were domestic students of color, and 21 percent were Pell eligible. Increasing socioeconomic diversity and the racial and ethnic diversity of the undergraduate student body have been top priorities for the past five years. The university’s commitment to residential learning and living means that over 92 percent of first-year students and 77 percent of students overall live in university-owned housing.

UD’s Carnegie classification is “doctoral intensive university.” In fiscal year 2020, the university had $169 million in sponsored research expenditures. The university’s overall operating budget is approximately $600 million with an endowment of over $600 million and total long-term investment pool of $1 billion.

The COVID-19 pandemic required prudent and proactive action. Through collaborative decision making that prioritized the health and mission of UD, the university is emerging in a sound financial position with a strong enrollment outlook.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Anti-Racism

The inclusive nature of the UD community and the university’s strategic commitment to multi-dimensional diversity and inclusive excellence differentiate the university from its peers. In 2020, UD reaffirmed its commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion and paved the way to becoming an anti-racist institution by launching The Flyers Plan for Community Excellence. This strategic plan is the result of a comprehensive and institution-wide effort of the President’s Diversity and Inclusion Assessment Task Force, a representative group created in 2017 and chaired by the Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion. The President’s Council also released an Anti-Racist Action Plan in June, 2020, building upon the Flyer’s Plan framework.

The 2017 Presidential Statement on Diversity and Inclusion states UD’s core values as follows:

The University of Dayton affirms that diversity, equity, and inclusion are inextricably linked with excellence. We aggressively pursue these core values, which align with our mission of building community in the world and working for justice for all people.

Diversity at all levels of the university—from the board of trustees to the student body—enriches our learning environment and expands our institutional ability, intelligence, and creativity.

As a Catholic and Marianist institution, the University of Dayton embraces diversity as a gift of God’s creation and is committed to honoring the intrinsic value and dignity of all people, no matter their race, religion, socio-economic status, gender, sexual orientation, country of origin, (dis)ability, ideology, and other expressions of human difference. We commit ourselves to eliminating discriminatory or hateful words and actions, pursuing equity, and becoming known as a fully inclusive and welcoming environment for learning, discovery, and community engagement. The university is spread out on a beautiful 388-acre campus comprising over 40 academic, recreational, athletic, and administrative facilities. UD has invested considerably in its physical plant in the last decade, including the construction of and major renovations to several campus buildings including the fitness center, the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, the science center, and the UD Arena, as well as classrooms, studios, and offices for fine and performing arts programs, and the athletic fields and facilities. UD purchased the former world headquarters of the NCR Corporation in 2009 and retrofitted the facility for graduate classrooms that house MBA and MPAcc classes, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute activities, the Institute for Pastoral Initiatives, UDRI, and administrative offices. The modernization of Roesch Library has made it into an exemplar for digital and collaborative learning, and facilities for the new Center for Cybersecurity and Data Intelligence in the SBA’s Miriam Hall have been completed. The newly renovated home for the Department of Computer Science was recently renamed in honor of Jesse S. Hathcock ‘30, the first African American woman to graduate from UD. Design work for a new performing arts center is close to completion.

As a proud anchor institution, UD has long been deeply engaged in the city of Dayton through mutually beneficial, innovative partnerships. UD continues to invest in community partnerships, collaborating with Premier Health to develop onMain, a 38-acre district adjacent to campus that aims to foster imagination and innovation. The Dayton Arcade, opened in March 2021, is part of a larger plan by the City of Dayton to bring residents, jobs, and visitors back to the downtown center of Dayton. The restoration of the Arcade has been a high priority for the City of Dayton, and the Arcade is well on its way to being a center for innovation and force for economic development in . In addition, UD and the L. William Crotty Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership have partnered with The Entrepreneurs’ Center (TEC) to University of Dayton Dean, School of Business Administration Page 5 of 12

Leadership

Eric F. Spina, Ph.D., the 19th president of the University of Dayton, took office in July 2016. He earned doctoral and master’s degrees in mechanical and aerospace engineering from Princeton University. Since joining UD, President Spina has led a far-reaching, campus-wide visioning process that inspires and guides the university’s planning and strategic investments. Under his leadership the university has eclipsed records, attracting the most diverse and academically gifted undergraduate classes in UD's history and recording new highs in sponsored research.

Paul H. Benson, Ph.D. is Provost and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs and professor of philosophy. Dr. Benson specializes in ethics and moral psychology. He joined the university faculty in 1985 in the philosophy department, served as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 2007 to 2014, and began serving as interim provost in 2014 prior to his permanent appointment as provost in 2016. He received his B.A., summa cum laude, in philosophy from St. Olaf College in 1979 and his Ph.D. from Princeton in 1984, supported by Danforth and Whiting Foundation fellowships. During his tenure as provost he has focused on advancing the strategic vision by expanding the faculty, fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion through enrollment strategy and curriculum revision, and expanding graduate programs, including the creation of two new doctoral programs.

A University Dedicated to the Common Good

In 2017, the University of Dayton, under President Spina’s leadership, launched its strategic vision, “For the Common Good.” This vision resulted from nearly a year of consultation across the university and its broader community to help define UD’s distinctive aspirations for the next two decades. The vision emphasizes the importance of deeper and more enduring community partnerships, as well as the importance of creating a transdisciplinary faculty and extending UD’s research strengths. Now over four years in, the university has made bold and exciting headway in meeting its numerous ambitious goals. Under President Spina’s leadership, the strategic vision has prompted the four strongest years of philanthropic support in the university’s history. THE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

The SBA is home to 76 full time faculty members, 57 part time faculty members, 35 staff members and serves 2,651 students, including 2,132 full time undergraduate students. The previous dean, who served only 3.5 years until his tragic passing, led the school on a collaborative and inclusive strategic planning process. Adopted in 2018, the SBA’s Strategic Plan is thoughtfully crafted to align with that of the larger university and the values espoused in a Catholic and Marianist education. The plan focuses on four main strategic goals:

• The SBA will lead in experientially focused business education. • The SBA will produce impactful high-profile scholarship. • The SBA will cultivate a diverse and inclusive environment for all. • The SBA will productively engage with the university community and external stakeholders.

SBA Mission

The School of Business Administration is a learning community in the Catholic and Marianist tradition committed to educating the whole person and to connecting learning and scholarship with leadership and service in an innovative business curriculum designed to prepare ethical leaders for successful careers in a global business environment.

SBA Vision

To be a leader in collaborative, transformational business education and scholarship, producing graduates recognized for practical wisdom and the values of the Catholic and Marianist tradition.

SBA and the commitment to the common good

Serving the common good requires that the community thinks about the common good – what it means and what it asks of the community. The common good refers to the collective values that members of a society hold about their mutual obligations to each other. In their professional lives, UD graduates serve the common good by acting with integrity in all their endeavors, by recognizing the intrinsic dignity of work, and by harnessing their creative talents to bring to the market new ideas that improve the human condition, and in so doing make the common good accessible to all people.

With the common good in mind, the SBA embraces several core values that guide decision making about people, curriculum, and research. Collectively, these core values weave their way through SBA’s short- term priorities, long-term aspirations, and into the fabric of their Catholic and Marianist identity. The core values include: learning through experience; grounded in integrity; enhanced by diversity; and seeking truth through discovery.

Accredited by the AACSB, ranked 48th in the nation in 2021 for “best online MBA programs” by Fortune, and ranked number one by GradReports for highest graduate salaries in Ohio, the SBA provides a rich educational experience by integrating a liberal arts education with its business programs using a strong theory-to-practice approach. Academic offerings have recently expanded, and the SBA currently offers eight baccalaureate level majors, three specialized masters programs, and both in-person and online MBA University of Dayton Dean, School of Business Administration Page 7 of 12

programs through four academic departments: Accounting; Economics & Finance; Management & Marketing; and Management Information Systems, Operations and Supply Chain Management, & Business Analytics. The entrepreneurship program at the University of Dayton has been ranked consistently since 2006 as one of the top 50 undergraduate entrepreneurship programs in the U.S. by The Princeton Review and Entrepreneur Magazine.

SBA Experiential Education

Many majors and the MBA provide (and require) “hands-on” capstone experiences. SBA students also are actively involved in many co-curricular experiential learning opportunities that are enhanced by the school’s Centers of Excellence. The L. William Crotty Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership, consistent with UD's commitment to the common good, pursues entrepreneurship with the aim of expanding the community’s opportunities for venture creation. is one of the nation’s largest student- run businesses in the country, with more than 200 students participating in ten divisions. Flyer Angels is a seven-figure private equity fund led and managed by students. Its mission is to create experiential learning opportunities for students, enabling them to learn how to “sit across the table” from entrepreneurs. Flyer Pitch, UD's Business Plan Competition, is the only global, multi-site, collegiate business plan competition. It includes six rounds spread over three countries. Its legacy includes more than 70 new ventures that have been launched as a result of the competition, with over $24 million in follow-on capital raised by those businesses. Flyer Consulting focuses on providing non-profit organization consulting and microlending in partnership with CityWide Development Corporation and the IMANI Marianists.

Students in the Davis Center for Portfolio Management manage the Flyer Investment Fund, an investment portfolio valued at $58.38 million of the UD endowment. The Flyer Investment Fund is the largest undergraduate managed portfolio in the country and has generated $39 million in capital gains since 2010. Additionally, the Dayton Foundation has partnered with the Davis Center to allow undergraduate investors to advise and manage a $1.5 million pool of assets designated by Foundation donors. The Hanley Trading Center students operate the Hanley Sustainability Fund, a $100,000 portfolio that seeks to outperform the overall stock market while investing in sustainable companies. The Center for Project Excellence applies student expertise to help area businesses solve complex problems. The center concentrates on management information systems and operations and supply chain management projects while supporting undergraduate and faculty research. The Center for the Integration of Faith and Work supports and promotes research on how UD’s Catholic and Marianist heritage informs and enriches business practices, policies, and leadership. The Fiore Talarico Center for Professional Selling produces world-class business-to-business sales professionals, using nationally-recognized best practices in sales management. In addition, SBA is home to the Sales Education Foundation, a national organization dedicated to elevating professionalism and ethics in professional selling by supporting university professional selling programs around the country.

Two additional SBA experiential learning opportunities have recently been initiated. Students in Flyers for Financial Literacy will use their knowledge of personal financial literacy to assist their community. In Fall 2021, members will begin educating and assisting other UD students and K-12 students in the Dayton community on personal financial literacy topics. The Greater West Dayton Incubator (GWDI) is at the intersection of UD’s most recent strategic visioning process and conversations with Greater West Dayton leaders. The purpose of the incubator is to build closer collaborative opportunities for this historically underserved community and help accelerate economic well-being and activity through them. This strategic initiative is part of UD’s plan-of-action in furthering its anti-racist commitment. It does so by University of Dayton Dean, School of Business Administration Page 8 of 12

providing opportunities for residents in West Dayton to start, scale, and sustain businesses and social ventures on their own and alongside other entrepreneurs. Additionally, nearly 25% of SBA undergraduate students participate in a wide variety of education abroad programs. Among the most popular are innovative summer SBA faculty-led programs.

THE ROLE

Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs, the Dean is responsible for providing internal and external strategic, administrative, and academic leadership. This requires working and communicating effectively and transparently with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and other community partners to establish and execute a unifying vision and strategy. The Dean will support policies, programs, and procedures, as well as build the necessary infrastructure and resources, to realize the overall vision. The Dean will be an active member of several campus leadership councils and effectively oversee the SBA’s leadership team comprised of two associate deans, four staff, one center director, and four department chairs. The university’s deans are expected to work closely with one another and to innovate collaboratively to advance the university.

The successful Dean will have a track record of entrepreneurial, transformative leadership that suggests they are able to inspire and encourage faculty, staff, and students to commit to a unified, strategic vision which moves the school towards greater prominence as a national leader in Catholic business education. The Dean will possess excellent communication and relationship building skills and demonstrated ability to work well as a collaborative and consultative member of the university senior leadership team while advocating for the resources to thrive as a key player in the overall university strategy and business and civic community. The Dean will work to advance diversity from historically underrepresented groups, articulate an understanding of the educational and social value of a diverse community, foster an inclusive educational and workplace climate, and lead efforts within the SBA to support the anti-racist goals of the university.

In order to be successful, the Dean must bring an understanding of dynamic changes in the higher education landscape as a result of a post-COVID world, student demographics, and the professional workforce market in order to create a distinctive identity to address evolving student and community needs. This will also require a commitment to UD’s Marianist core values. The result will be a more cohesive identity for the SBA and a clear and compelling roadmap for the future.

KEY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGES AND OPPORTINITIES

Primary opportunities and challenges for the Dean will include the following:

Provide visionary, strategic leadership to propel the SBA’s identity and vision

The Dean will be charged with preserving the school’s distinctive qualities while simultaneously moving the school forward, advancing its standing regionally, nationally, and internationally, and envisioning a bright future for the SBA that continues to build toward the highest possible levels of excellence. Bringing together the understanding of key trends in business education and personal strengths in University of Dayton Dean, School of Business Administration Page 9 of 12

entrepreneurship and the value of experiential education, the Dean will lead the SBA to be a business school of choice nationally. It is expected the Dean will combine their vision for the SBA with the strong sense of institutional pride and community that already exists at UD and across the region. The Dean will build consensus, manage the order and pace of continued change, and possess the perseverance necessary to realize the vision. Throughout this work, the Dean will inspire faculty, students, and staff to innovate and pursue excellence in the areas that leverage the SBA’s strengths. The Dean will inherit a committed, talented, and hard-working team that is eager to contribute to the SBA’s future. The faculty and staff will look to a new Dean to be a visionary leader, an advocate, and a resource in maximizing resources and existing strengths to accelerating the school into its next era.

Advance diversity, equity, and inclusion and UD’s commitment to being an anti-racist institution

UD is deeply committed to diversity and inclusive excellence and being an anti-racist institution, as this is at the heart of its Catholic, Marianist ethos. The new Dean will demonstrate a personal and professional commitment towards advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, and will have a track record of fostering an inclusive climate. The Dean will work closely with the SBA leadership team, faculty, staff, and students to support an emerging consensus-driven vision of how this important work will translate into the curriculum and student services, and how it will guide and influence teaching, research, and service. Work within the SBA has already begun towards these vital goals, anchored by the UD Anti-Racism Action Plan and the Flyers Plan for Community Excellence, yet more must be done to achieve the school’s and university’s aspirations.

Enhance the visibility and influence of the SBA through strategic growth of external partnerships

The next Dean will be an ambassador for the SBA and will advocate boldly on its behalf. The Dean will deepen significant external relationships and forge new ones across both the state and the country. Grounded in forward-thinking, community-based programs, including the Greater West Dayton Incubator and other experiential opportunities, the Dean will strive to maintain current relationships and create deeper intentional partnerships between faculty and community leaders to enhance the already substantial impact the SBA has in the region. The Dean will also encourage and support faculty and students to seek new external opportunities that deepen the academic experience and further the mission of the institution.

Fairly manage, prioritize, and actively grow resources

In order to meet the strategic objectives of the SBA, the Dean will need to manage the budget in a skillful, fair, and transparent manner. The Dean will actively identify new sources of revenue that will help the SBA become less tuition dependent. These could include new programs, delivery methods, and leveraging faculty research. However, as an institution that remains tuition-dependent, collaboration with the Office of Enrollment Management will be essential. The SBA enjoys strong undergraduate demand, and the new Dean will be effective at assessing existing programs to identify areas primed for investment and continued growth. The Dean will work strategically with the SBA’s partners, e.g., 2U and Shorelight, to ensure that partnerships are beneficial to faculty, staff, and students, and financially accretive.

The Dean will work closely with the advancement office as a champion on behalf of the SBA and the university. The Dean will help identify and cultivate donor relationships as part of UD’s fundraising University of Dayton Dean, School of Business Administration Page 10 of 12

campaign, currently in its silent phase. University-wide campaign priorities include access and affordability, experiential learning, and faculty innovation and excellence. The Dean must have the energy, enthusiasm, and passion to effectively communicate the story of the SBA in a way that inspires donors and the alumni community.

Support the faculty and staff in their professional endeavors

Committed and engaged faculty and staff are crucial to fulfilling the SBA’s academic mission, goals, and priorities. As enrollment in the SBA is at an all-time high, administrative demands are on the rise, and resources are spread thin. The school needs a dean who is an effective manager and ensures that the professional growth and development of SBA personnel are encouraged and supported. The Dean will also provide support systems leading to even higher levels of faculty research success and external funding, ensuring UD is an inspiring place for faculty with ambitious research goals, while maintaining UD’s and SBA’s commitment to excellence in teaching and developing the next generation of service- minded business leaders.

Effectively lead the SBA in its dedication to the common good

Guided by the Catholic, Marianist identity, UD embraces the mission to work for the benefit of society and is proudly committed to developing students who advance the common good after graduating. This ethos informs UD’s direction, shapes academic programs across the campus, inspires research, motivates partnerships, and forms graduates into servant-leaders. The Dean will embrace this philosophy and expand upon the SBA’s existing academics, research, teaching, and partnerships to serve the common good vision. The SBA is at the forefront of this university priority. For example, all SBA students complete a course in business ethics, elective undergraduate and required graduate courses tie professional topics to the common good, and through the BWISE experience students consider their impact on the world through service, international, and experiential learning opportunities.

Persuasively advocate for the SBA across campus while fostering internal partnerships

The Dean will set the cultural tone of the SBA, including attending to faculty, staff, and student needs, supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion, ensuring the SBA is a valued partner across the university, helping the SBA become a leader among all academic units within UD, and serving as an ardent advocate for the school. The opportunity to have an impact on student lives, professional development, and careers is unprecedented, and this Dean will embrace a student-centered ethos that is central to a UD education. The Dean will seek opportunities for collaboration across the university, seek inter- and transdisciplinary opportunities, and bridge the work of the SBA to the Dayton community. The University prides itself on its collegial highly relational place, and the Dean will partner with others to elevate the work of UD.
