Celebrate the Arts

03.01.2010 | Fine Arts

The University of Dayton is offering the public a free sample of the best its arts students have to offer.

The annual Celebration of the Arts: Opening Performance is scheduled for 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, at the Schuster Performing Arts Center, One West Second St., downtown Dayton.

The program highlights the University's diverse range of arts studies. It will feature performances by University of Dayton music, theatre and dance students as well as visual arts displays in the lobby and faculty performances at a pre-show in the Wintergarden. Neal Gittleman, music director of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, will serve as master of ceremonies.

The program is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. Call 937-229-2545 or reserve tickets online at the related link. Free transportation is available by RTA bus at 6:45 and 7:20 p.m. from the intersection of Stewart and Alberta streets.

The Celebration of the Arts evening of performances is the opening act to the University's Stander Symposium, an annual spring event showcasing student research and scholarship. This is the first year the opening performance will be held a month prior to the Stander Symposium.

"Every time you have an event at the Schuster Center, it's something special," said music professor Patrick Reynolds. "It's special anytime you have a performance that celebrates student talent, but it's even more so because the entire purpose of the Stander Celebration is to honor the artistic work of a very large and diversely talented body of students. People have no idea how much art goes on here."

The show will open with the University's Symphonic Wind Ensemble. Other highlights include a theater selection from the modern stage adaptation of the Moliere comedy Scapin; the First Flight saxophone quartet's performance of Cityscapes I: Lakeshore Drive; the University of Dayton Chorale; a new world music choir performing South African and Chinese selections; an energetic percussion piece and the University of Dayton Dance Ensemble. The Dayton Jazz Ensemble and the Ebony Heritage Singers close the show with a performance of two pieces arranged by saxophonist and 2002 music graduate Bobby Streng.

The Stander Symposium wraps up with the Celebration of the Arts: Closing Exhibition from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, at the Rike Center gallery on campus. The visual arts department will host a reception and evening of open studios featuring the awards ceremony for the annual Horvath Exhibition, a juried exhibition highlighting student artwork, which will be on display March 24 through April 21. Demonstrations, student art and design from across the department will be included in the open studios.

The closing exhibition is free and open to the public, and no tickets are required.

The Rike Center for Fine Arts is located on the south side of B lot off Stewart Street and across from St. Mary's Hall. The gallery entrance is on the lower level. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday; closed Saturday and Sunday.
