The University rfDayto n News Release UD SYMPOSIUM WILL FOCUS ON THE CHURCH AND SOCIAL JUSTICE THROUGH A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE DAYTON, , March 15, 1990--Formal presentations, workshops and open discussions will be part of a University of Dayton symposium designed to focus on how social justice issues can be incorporated into the work of the to strengthen families. "The Church Faces Social Justice Through a Family Perspective" will be held May 10-12, with a registration deadline of April 1. There is no registration fee, and housing is available in Kettering Residence Hall on a first-come, first-served basis. For registration materials, contact the Center for the Study of Family Development, 300 College Park, Dayton, Ohio, 45469, or call (513) 229-4614. "Family ministers are helping individual families cope, through counseling programs such as marriage preparation and support groups for divorced and remarried members," said Patricia Voydanoff, director of the Center for the Study of Family Development at UD. "But there are a lot of social justice institutions that have an impact on how families function, by pushing for legislation for child care or increased minimum wage for example. With this symposium, we hope to see more interchange between these two different ways of strengthening families." The Most Rev. Daniel E. Pilarczyk, archbishop of , will conduct a Mass for symposium participants on Friday, May 11. Session leaders during the symposium will include John Carr, secretary of the Department of Social Development and World Peace of the u.s. Catholic Conference; the Rev. James L. Heft, S.M., provost of UD; Dolores Leckey, executive director of the Secretariat for Laity and Family Life of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops; Kathleen and James McGinnis, coordinators of the Parenting for Peace and Justice Network of the Institute for Peace and Justice; Rosemary Winder Strange, associate director for Social Services of Catholic Charities USA; Auxiliary Bishop Joseph M. Sullivan of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and Angela Ann Zukowski, M.H.S.H., executive director of UD's Center for Religious Telecommunications.
