Podrhtava i baletski establi{ment. Najzna~ajnije baletske kompanije najavljuju velike poslovne i umetni~ke poteze. Njihovo ostvarenje uslovljava akutni nedostatak novca, a novac je neophodno redovno i mudro investirati u igra~ku umetnost. Baletska takmi~enje (Lozana, Njujork, Varna, Pariz) u znaku su 2000. godine i dolaze}eg veka. Nova formula tih konkursa podrazumeva, prvenstveno, brigu o psi- umetniåku hofizi~kom zdravlju budu}ih umetnika, a odgovornost baletskih pedagoga podi`e se na najvi{i nivo. Nove igra~ke (zbunjuju}e) tehnike, kreiraju novi, mladi koreografi. • Melita Milin the Russian Musical Emigration in Yugoslavia
Melita Milin The Russian Musical Emigration in Yugoslavia... Melita Milin THE RUSSIAN MUSICAL EMIGRATION IN YUGOSLAVIA AFTER 1917 Abstract: Around forty thousand Russian emigrants settled in Yugoslavia running away from the terror of the 1917 Revolution. A high percentage of them were writers, artists, musicians and ballet dancers. Their greatest contribution to Yugoslav musical culture consists in the important acceleration they brought to the development of the domestic scene. Especially valuable were the activities of opera singers and directors, ballet dancers and choreographers, scenery designers, conductors of church choirs and music pedagogues. Key-Words: Russian emigration, Yugoslav music, Serbian music, Russian music, Russian ballet. The topic of the Russian emigration was more or less a prohibited the- me in USSR and the East-European countries during the communist rule. Since the beginning of the 1990’s a noticeable increase of interest for resear- ching the role of the Russian musical and other emigration in Yugoslavia in the period between the two world wars has been observed. Two congresses have been organized, their proceedings published, as well as many books and articles. Researches have been undertaken not only by historians of culture, arts and music, but also by individuals – amateurs, usually of Russian descent. The terror and bloodshed of the Russian October revolution and the civil war that followed (1917q20) brought a considerable number of Russian emigrants into Yugoslavia, as well as to many other countries of Europe and America. Driven by fear and despair around 2 million Russians chose the uncertain emigrant fate hoping that their exile would not last long.

  • Maga Magazinović and Modern Dance in Serbia (1910-1968): Marking the Fiftieth Anniversary of Her Death
NADEŽDA MOSUSOVA (Belgrade / Serbia) Maga Magazinović and Modern Dance in Serbia (1910-1968): Marking the Fiftieth Anniversary of her Death Introduction This report about the highly intelligent and multifaceted Serbian personality, Maga Magazinovi!, is based mainly on her memoirs, which were written in 1951-1960 and deal with the period of her life from childhood until 1927. 1 Maria/Magdalena Magazinovi! (1882 -1968), called Maga, came from a modest provincial family in the then Kingdom of Serbia, completing her stu- dies at Belgrade University in 1904. Maga’s subjects were philosophy and German language and literature. She worked first as a librarian at the Natio- nal Library, then as a teacher at the Girls’ High School (gymnasium) in Bel - grade. She was a good translator and the first Serbian female journalist (columnist), with a socialist and feminist engagement. Her dynamic presence was soon noticed by intellectuals in the Serbian capital for its wits and talents, for example Maga’s predilection for dance. Dance in general (except ballroom and folk) and ballet were unknown in Serbia during the first decade of the twentieth century. Opera was at its very beginning, and thus there was only a tradition in drama, practiced in the National Theatre of Belgrade, which was founded in 1868. Salome in Belgrade The National Theatre, this very important centre of cultural life in Serbia, hosted the guest presentation of Maud Allan in 1907, with her interpretation of the dancing piece Salome , supported by music of Marcel Remy. Traditio- nally, patriarchal Serbian society accepted with approval (mainly the female part) the barefoot appearance of this well known Canadian dancer.

Unusual aspects of Ives’s career. Ives had an extraordinary working life. After professional training as an organist and composer, he worked in insurance for 30 years, composing in his free time. He used a wide variety of styles, from tonal Romanticism to radical experimentation, even in pieces written during the same period, and in his mature music frequently used multiple styles within a single work as a formal and expressive device. His major works often took years from first sketch to final revisions, and most pieces lay unperformed for decades. His self- publications in the early 1920s brought a small group of admirers who worked to promote his music.

This season marks the 94th Northrop Concerts and Lectures Season since it was founded in 1919 at the University of Minnesota. This season will also feature a special programmatic focus on the 100th Anniversary of The Rite of Spring, featuring the original recreation of the Nijinsky/Stravinsky version from 1913, along with Maurice Béjart’s radically experimental version. While the construction and revitalization of the historic Northrop Auditorium continues (Feb 2011-Spring 2014), the second NORTHROP MOVES season includes performances in downtown Minneapolis State and Orpheum Theatres, Ted Mann Concert Hall on the U of M campus, and The O’Shaughnessy at St. Catherine University. • DANCE for a CITY: FIFTY YEARS of the NEW YORK CITY BALLET New-York Historical Society Exhibition Curated by Lynn Garafola April 20 - August 15, 1999
DANCE FOR A CITY: FIFTY YEARS OF THE NEW YORK CITY BALLET New-York Historical Society Exhibition Curated by Lynn Garafola April 20 - August 15, 1999 The labels, wall texts, and reflections complement the volume Dance for a City: Fifty Years of the New York City Ballet published by Columbia University Press in 1999. Edited by Lynn Garafola, with Eric Foner, and including essays by Thomas Bender, Sally Banes, Charles M. Joseph, Richard Sennett, Jonathan Weinberg, and Nancy Reynolds, the book, unlike most exhibition catalogues, does not include a checklist. In revisiting this material, I wanted to evoke the experience of walking through six large galleries on the ground floor of the New-York Historical Society, with the reader enjoying by suggestion and as an act of imagination the numerous objects on display tracing the long history of the New York City Ballet. As I prepare this for publication on the Columbia University Academic Commons nearly two decades after the exhibition was dismantled, I thank once again the many lenders who made it possible. I also remain deeply grateful to the exhibition designer, Stephen Saitas, for his guidance and for creating an installation of haunting beauty.—Lynn Garafola Introductory Text Founded in 1948 by George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein, the New York City Ballet is universally recognized as one of the world's outstanding dance companies. This exhibition traces its development both as an artistic and social entity. The story begins with the fateful encounter of the two men in 1933, when Kirstein, an arts maverick and patron extraordinaire, invited the twenty-nine-year-old Russian-born choreographer to establish a company and a school in the United States.

  • Macedonian Ballet Repertoire Analysis – Layer of Classical Ballet Production
Macedón Tudományos és Kulturális Közlemények Macedonian Ballet Repertoire ZDRAVKOVA-DJEPAROSKA, SONJA: MACEDONIAN BALLET REPERTOIRE ANALYSIS – LAYER OF CLASSICAL BALLET PRODUCTION Zdravkova-Dјeparoska, Sonja Dr., Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, Faculty of Music, Department of Ballet Pedagogy, professor. #macedonbalett #macedonnemzetiszinhaz #macedonopera #balettrepertoar #balettestarsadalom Abstract Macedonian ballet was founded in 1949, and in 2019 the ensemble celebrated its 70th anniversary. That was a reason for a theoretical review and analysis of the repertory. A starting point in the interpretation of the Macedonian ballet repertoire is the task to determine a recognizable expression with emphasized characteristics and features. The time frame comprises 1949, the year of founding of the professional ballet group within the Macedonian National Theatre, and its cease with the season 2019/20. Analyzing the whole repertoire, three layers can be distinguished. • The History and Development of the Ohio State University Concert Wind Band Program from 1929 – 1995
The History and Development of The Ohio State University Concert Wind Band Program from 1929 – 1995 Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Jennifer Marie Blair, B.M. Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2010 Master's Examination Committee: Dr. Daryl Kinney, Advisor Dr. Patricia Flowers Dr. Russel Mikkelson Copyright by Jennifer Marie Blair 2010 Abstract From humble beginnings, the concert wind bands at The Ohio State University developed from a utilitarian campus group to a nationally recognized program, serving the artistic, educational, and aesthetic needs of the students for whom it exists. From an educational standpoint, the Ohio State band program is not alone in this development. Across the country, similar wind groups began as makeshift military bands, fashioned loosely in the style of traveling professional groups from the early twentieth century. As these bands became established campus ensembles, eventually serving the academic needs of music departments and schools, directors began to selectively model their programs on the philosophical and educational trends of the day. Reflective of the national progression of the wind band movement, the Ohio State band directors demonstrated a desire to perform original and often contemporary literature, to replicate the instrumentation of other leading university band programs, and to seek performance opportunities that would bring recognition to the ensemble and attract talented prospective students. As opportunities and resources grew for band directors at Ohio State, value-based decisions were made, which resulted from the directors' own philosophical views on performance and education, limited only by the support and funding provided by campus administrators.
