  • Melita Milin the Russian Musical Emigration in Yugoslavia
Melita Milin The Russian Musical Emigration in Yugoslavia... Melita Milin THE RUSSIAN MUSICAL EMIGRATION IN YUGOSLAVIA AFTER 1917 Abstract: Around forty thousand Russian emigrants settled in Yugoslavia running away from the terror of the 1917 Revolution. A high percentage of them were writers, artists, musicians and ballet dancers. Their greatest contribution to Yugoslav musical culture consists in the important acceleration they brought to the development of the domestic scene. Especially valuable were the activities of opera singers and directors, ballet dancers and choreographers, scenery designers, conductors of church choirs and music pedagogues. Key-Words: Russian emigration, Yugoslav music, Serbian music, Russian music, Russian ballet. The topic of the Russian emigration was more or less a prohibited the- me in USSR and the East-European countries during the communist rule. Since the beginning of the 1990’s a noticeable increase of interest for resear- ching the role of the Russian musical and other emigration in Yugoslavia in the period between the two world wars has been observed. Two congresses have been organized, their proceedings published, as well as many books and articles. Researches have been undertaken not only by historians of culture, arts and music, but also by individuals – amateurs, usually of Russian descent. The terror and bloodshed of the Russian October revolution and the civil war that followed (1917q20) brought a considerable number of Russian emigrants into Yugoslavia, as well as to many other countries of Europe and America. Driven by fear and despair around 2 million Russians chose the uncertain emigrant fate hoping that their exile would not last long.

September 23, 2020 Dear Dancers and Parents, We now have approval to film the Nutcracker on the Russell stage! The filming dates are Friday, Saturday, Sunday, November 20-22. Each class will be filmed by appointment, for an hour. Every dancer will be in a mask. We will color coordinate these. We will give you that schedule asap, but please go ahead and save those dates on your calendar. No overlapping of classes on the filming dates. We have to film before Thanksgiving because our college students will not be back on campus after Thanksgiving. On the day of filming, each class may have ONE adult only, in mask, present in the audience to watch that class or dance film, in the back of Russell, or in the balcony, socially distanced. DVDs will be sold of the Nutcracker. The cast list will be posted on Monday at Miller and Chappell studio! It will also be posted on our dance web site. Remember we are cutting some dances this year, and shortening the bigger scenes of Party Scene, Kingdom of Sweets, Mice and Soldier, and the Finale due to limiting dancers on stage to 21. The rehearsal schedule will be posted on Monday as well! This is your information letter about ordering Nutcracker costumes. We are using the SAME costumes as last year. Remember to order a size up so that they may be worn in the spring concert in May!! (Creative Movement will have a different costume in the spring concert). Please order UP if in any doubt!! There are size charts by the pictures as well.

  • Maga Magazinović and Modern Dance in Serbia (1910-1968): Marking the Fiftieth Anniversary of Her Death
NADEŽDA MOSUSOVA (Belgrade / Serbia) Maga Magazinović and Modern Dance in Serbia (1910-1968): Marking the Fiftieth Anniversary of her Death Introduction This report about the highly intelligent and multifaceted Serbian personality, Maga Magazinovi!, is based mainly on her memoirs, which were written in 1951-1960 and deal with the period of her life from childhood until 1927. 1 Maria/Magdalena Magazinovi! (1882 -1968), called Maga, came from a modest provincial family in the then Kingdom of Serbia, completing her stu- dies at Belgrade University in 1904. Maga’s subjects were philosophy and German language and literature. She worked first as a librarian at the Natio- nal Library, then as a teacher at the Girls’ High School (gymnasium) in Bel - grade. She was a good translator and the first Serbian female journalist (columnist), with a socialist and feminist engagement. Her dynamic presence was soon noticed by intellectuals in the Serbian capital for its wits and talents, for example Maga’s predilection for dance. Dance in general (except ballroom and folk) and ballet were unknown in Serbia during the first decade of the twentieth century. Opera was at its very beginning, and thus there was only a tradition in drama, practiced in the National Theatre of Belgrade, which was founded in 1868. Salome in Belgrade The National Theatre, this very important centre of cultural life in Serbia, hosted the guest presentation of Maud Allan in 1907, with her interpretation of the dancing piece Salome , supported by music of Marcel Remy. Traditio- nally, patriarchal Serbian society accepted with approval (mainly the female part) the barefoot appearance of this well known Canadian dancer.

Among this year’s Momentum works: Matthew Lovegood’s French Songs (left); Erika Overturff’s Connemara; and Overturff’s Rhapsody in Blue. More full-resolution photos... NEW BRAND, NEW DANCERS, NEW WORKS IN AMERICAN MIDWEST BALLET'S MOMENTUM OMAHA — The freshly rebranded American Midwest Ballet — formerly known as Ballet Nebraska — will open its ninth season in October with a fresh crop of works, artistic director Erika Overturff said. “Our mixed repertory program, Momentum, has been a must-see since our earliest seasons, because it showcases the exciting range of dance as an expressive art,” Overturff said. “For its first American Midwest Ballet edition, we're mixing some past favorites with works that will be new experiences for our audiences.” Headlining the selection is Overturff's Rhapsody in Blue, to the iconic music of George Gershwin. “When I choreographed it, I listened to the music many times until I knew all of the rhythms and notes by heart,” Overturff said. “The music is so expressive; within one piece it conveys so many different moods. It is flirty, jazzy, big and bold, whiny and sad, sweeping and romantic, daring and quick – lots of personality! “I see the dancers as a personification of the musical notes themselves, as if they floated out of the instruments and onto the stage for us to see.” ! Among the program’s other highlights are three guest works: Frank Chaves’ sultry, flirtatious At Last, is a duet set to lyrics sung by the incomparable Etta James.
