Richard Teitelbaum and Hiroko Sakurazawa of the David and Sylvia Teitelbaum Fund, Don McCormick, Curator for the Rodgers & Hammerstein Archives of Recorded Sound at the New York Public Library of Performing Arts, and Alyce Mott, Artistic Administrator at the Little Orchestra Society, granted the necessary permissions to acquire a recording of Cowell’s Symphony No. 13 – Madras L848 and attain a deeper appreciation for and understanding of Cowell’s work in the “whole world of music.” Valuable support came from the Music Library Association with the 2007 Carol June Bradley Award for my research on Henry Cowell. The welcome news of the very generous prize came from Bonna J. Boettcher, Music Librarian and Adjunct Professor of Music, of Cornell University, and Rick McRae, Chair of the Carol June Bradley Award Committee. 4 My dear friend and mentor from the University of Central Florida, the wondrous composer Stella Sung, prompted my journey to Gainesville and research under Dr. Kushner. Her encouragement and friendship continue to inspire. Joscelyn Godwin candidly shared his memories of his dissertation and the story of how he wound up in Sidney’s attic with the “mess of manuscripts.” His pioneering work continues to help devoted Cowell scholars everywhere. Christopher Shultis has helped validate the usefulness of the virtual Cowell Files and my appendix of annotations in his own research at Fleisher. His encouragement has provided me the opportunity to delve into my next big project – the WPA Music Copying Project at Fleisher. Mary Louise Fleisher, Edwin’s first cousin once removed, provided a singular source on family history and kindly took the time to entertain my inquiries. I appreciate her good humor and insights. Closer to home, my niece, Tehya Allen Duckworth, facilitated genealogic research on the Fleisher family and the quest for biographical details on otherwise obscure figures by sharing access to Ancestry.com. Lefferts This essay sketches the story of the bands and bandmasters of the twenty seven new black army regiments which served in the U.S. Army in World War I. They underwent rapid mobilization and demobilization over 1917-1919, and were for the most part unconnected by personnel or traditions to the long-established bands of the four black regular U.S. Army regiments that preceded them and continued to serve after them. Pressed to find sufficient numbers of willing and able black band leaders, the army turned to schools and the entertainment industry for the necessary talent.

In the late 1900s David Randall and Lowell Weiner explored the unaccompanied clarinet duets in their dissertations “A Comprehensive Performance Project in Clarinet Literature with an Essay on the Clarinet Duet From ca.1715 to ca.1825” and “The Unaccompanied Clarinet Duet Repertoire from 1825 to the Present: An Annotated Catalogue”. However, unaccompanied duets for clarinet and another woodwind instrument are seldom mentioned in the academic literature and are rarely performed. In an attempt to fill the void, this research will provide a partial survey of this category. Because of the sheer volume of the duet literature, the scope of the study will be limited to original compositions entitled Sonata or Sonatina written for a pair of woodwind instruments which include at least one clarinet. Arrangements will be cited but not discussed. All of the works will be annotated, evaluated, graded by difficulty, and comparisons will be made between those with similar style.

The Early Medieval Music (500-1150). i. Early chant traditions Chant (or plainsong) is a monophonic sacred form which represents the earliest known music of the Christian Church. The simplest, syllabic chants, in which each syllable is set to one note, were probably intended to be sung by the choir or congregation, while the more florid, melismatic examples (which have many notes to each syllable) were probably performed by soloists. Plainchant melodies (which are sometimes referred to as a “drown,” are characterized by the following: A monophonic texture; For ease of singing, relatively conjunct melodic contour (meaning no large intervals between one note and the next) and a restricted range (no notes too high or too low); and Rhythms based strictly on the articulation of the word being sung (meaning no steady dancelike beats). Chant developed separately in several European centers, the most important being Rome, Hispania, Gaul, Milan and Ireland. Chant was developed to support the regional liturgies used when celebrating Mass. Each area developed its own chant and rules for celebration. In Spain and Portugal, Mozarabic chant was used, showing the influence of North Afgican music. The Mozarabic liturgy survived through Muslim rule, though this was an isolated strand and was later suppressed in an attempt to enforce conformity on the entire liturgy.
