ITALIAN, PORTUGUESE, SPANISH AND LATIN AMERICAN SYMPHONIES From the 19th Century to the Present A Discography of CDs and LPs Prepared by Michael Herman FRANCO ALFANO (1876-1960, ITALY) Born in Posillipo, Naples. After studying the piano privately with Alessandro Longo, and harmony and composition with Camillo de Nardis and Paolo Serrao at the Conservatorio di San Pietro a Majella, Naples, he attended the Leipzig Conservatory where he completed his composition studies with Salomon Jadassohn. He worked all over Europe as a touring pianist before returning to Italy where he eventually settled in San Remo. He held several academic positions: first as a teacher of composition and then director at the Liceo Musicale, Bologna, then as director of the Liceo Musicale (later Conservatory) of Turin and professor of operatic studies at the Conservatorio di San Cecilia, Rome. As a composer, he speacialized in opera but also produced ballets, orchestral, chamber, instrumental and vocal works. He is best known for having completed Puccini’s "Turandot." He was a student of Campos Coelho and graduated from the Superior Piano Course of the National Conservatory of Lisbon. He then studied composition with Karl Schiske at the Vienna Academy of Music. He had a successful international career as a concert pianist and has composed prolifically in various genres including: instrumental piano solos, chamber music, symphonic pieces and choral-symphonic music, songs, opera, cinematic and theater scores. -

Biography JORGE MESTER, Conductor
Biography JORGE MESTER, conductor Jorge Mester is recognized throughout the world as a preeminent conductor, renowned for the excellence and prominence he brings to every organization he leads. The 2011- 12 season marks his 8th season as music director of the Naples Philharmonic (FL). In July 2006, Mester was invited to return as music director of The Louisville Orchestra (KY), a position he previously held for twelve years from 1967-1979. Music Director of the Pasadena Symphony for 25 years from 1985-2010, Mester is also Conductor Laureate of the prestigious Aspen Music Festival, which he led as music director for 21 years from 1970-1991. He previously put his unique stamp on the Puerto Rico Festival Casals during the seven years he served as its music director beginning in the late 1970s. As the artistic director of the National Orchestral Association's New Orchestra Music Project from 1988 to 1992, he became familiar with an impressive number of American composers and had the opportunity to present many new works at Carnegie Hall. He also served as chief conductor of the West Australia Symphony Orchestra in Perth and principal guest conductor of both the Adelaide Symphony and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. From 1998 to 2002, he served as artistic director of the Orquesta Filarmonica de la Ciudad de Mexico in Mexico City. As a guest conductor, Mester has traveled the world to appear with such orchestras as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of London, Cape Town Symphony Orchestra and the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra. He commanded worldwide attention when he conducted the opening ceremonies for the Getty Center in Los Angeles in 1997 and subsequently served as artistic director of the Center's first classical music series. -

He studied organ, piano, harmony and counterpoint with Hermann Krotzschmar as well as organ with Carl August Haupt and orchestration and composition with Wilhelm Wieprecht in Berlin, Germany. He then toured in Europe for three years. After returning to the U.S. and settling in Boston, he became a member of the faculty of Harvard where he remained for over 4 decades teaching composition to a whole generation of American composers. He received a degree in music composition from San Jose State University and has studied composition with Donald Sur, Brent Heisinger, Charles Jones, and Andrew Imbrieas well as conducting with Angelo Frascarelli, David Epstein and Higo Harada. He was a violinist with the Albany Symphony Orchestra and was assistant conductor of the Palo Alto Philharmonic and the Nova Vista Symphony. He has composed orchestral, band and chamber works. His father taught him how to play the clarinet, and was a clarinetist in community ensembles and later studied the instrument further with Felix Viscuglia, clarinetist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He began composing as a child and then studied composition at Harvard University with Leon Kirchner, Roger Sessions, Earl Kim and David Del Tredici. In addition, he worked in the electronic music studio at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music having built his own analogue synthesizer. He went on to become one of America's leading composers whose works are constantly performed. -

He studied at Northwestern University in Chicago, American University in Washington D.C. and at the Peabody Conservatory of Music where he earned a doctorate in composition. He has composed orchestral, band, chamber and choral works. His catalogue includes Symphony No. 2 for Narrator and Symphonic Band "The Lion of Panjshir" (2002-4). Symphony No. 1 for Mezzo-Soprano and Orchestra "Esperanto" (1994-8) VÌt Micka/Kimball Wheeler (mezzo)/Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra ( + Euphonium Concerto) MMC RECORDINGS 2113 (2002) NANCY GALBRAITH (b. 1951) Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She began playing piano at the age of four and studied music at Ohio University, West Virginia University and Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh where she now teaches composition and music theory. She has composed orchestral, band, chamber, piano, organ, vocal and electroacoustic works. Her catalogue includes a Chamber Symphony No. 1 (2004). He studied analysis and orchestration at Hofstra University with Elie Siegmeister with whom he then studied composition and counterpoint privately. Afterwards, he studied analysis and composition with Robert Palmer and Burrill Phillips at Cornell University where he earned his MFA and DMA. He also attended seminars with Karel Husa, Thea Musgrave and Ned Rorem as well as masterclasses with Aaron Copland and George Crumb. -

GERMAN & AUSTRIAN SYMPHONIES From The 19th Century To The Present Composers other than Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner, Mahler, Mendelssohn, Schubert & Schumann A Discography of CDs and LPs Prepared by Michael Herman Composers A-L JOHANN JOSEPH ABERT (1832-1915) A Sudeten German, he was born in Kochowitz, Bohemia (now Kochovice, Czech Republic). He studied double bass at the Prague Conservatory with Josef Hrabe and also received lessons in theory from Johann Friedrich Kittl and August Wilhelm Ambros. He became a double bassist for the Court Orchestra at Stuttgart and later was appointed Kapellmeister. He composed orchestral and chamber works as well as lieder and several successful operas. His unrecorded Symphonies are: Nos. 1 in B minor (1852), 2 in C minor (1854), 3 in A major (1856), 5 in C minor (1870), 6 in D minor "Lyric Symphony" (1890) and 7 in C major "Spring Symphony" (1894). Symphony No. 4 in D major, Op. 31 "Columbus, A Musical Portrait of the Sea in the Form of a Symphony" (1863) Werner Stiefel/Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic Orchestra ( + Concerto for Double Bass and Variations for Double Bass and Orchestra) BAYER RECORDS 100160 (1996) AUGUST RITTER VON ADELBURG (1830-1873) Born in Pera, Turkey. The son of a diplomat, he spent his early years in Istanbul before going to Vienna to study music with Joseph Mayseder for violin and with Hoffmann for composition. He then toured Europe as a violinist. He later returned to Istanbul where he played the violin before the Sultan to whom he dedicated this Symphony. He mostly composed operas, chamber, instrumental and vocal works. -

He has worked as a music teacher and businessman as well as a freelance composer. His compositions cover many genres, including opera, orchestral, chamber, instrumental, vocal and choral music. The actual affiliation fee is based on a station’s market share. Affiliates are not charged fees for the selection of WFMT Radio Network programs on the Public Radio Exchange (PRX). • The cost of our Beethoven and Jazz Network overnight services is based on a sliding scale, depending on the number of hours you use (the more hours you use, the lower the hourly rate). We also offer reduced Beethoven and Jazz Network rates for HD broadcast. Through PRX, you can schedule any hour of the Beethoven or Jazz Network throughout the day and the files are delivered a week in advance for maximum flexibility. We provide highly skilled technical support: • Programs are available through the Public Radio Exchange (PRX). PRX delivers files to you days in advance so you can schedule them for broadcast at your convenience. We provide technical support in conjunction with PRX to answer all your distribution questions. In cases of emergency or for use as an alternate distribution platform, we also offer an FTP (File Transfer Protocol), which is kept up to date with all of our series and specials.
