Writing a doctoral thesis is a challenging but also incredibly rewarding endeavour, and I have been so lucky to have you by my side to share it. iv Abstract In this thesis, I trace a powerful narrative theme of ‘progress’ across several different genres of storytelling: fictional stories in cinema and literature, audience accounts of everyday consumption practices, and the various stories circulating in media, public debate, and academic scholarship. Stories of progress are pervasive and compelling in contemporary Indonesia, whether in ‘inspirational’ films and novels featuring upwardly mobile young protagonists, or in audience discussions and media debates about the potential of such fictional stories to ‘advance’ and ‘develop’ the nation in both material and moral terms. Central to many of these stories are the keywords ‘modernity’ and ‘development.’ My project seeks to highlight the flexible and unstable iridescence of these keywords as preferred metaphors for interpreting complex social changes, and also the intimate links these terms share with disempowering colonialist and developmentalist discourses around civilisation and linear trajectories of progress. A key premise of this thesis is that words, language, and stories have concrete impacts on our ways of understanding and interpreting the world, and I suggest that uncritical use of opaque terms like ‘modernity’ and ‘development’ can mask deep complexities, reinforce structural inequalities, and erase alternative stories, particularly in postcolonial contexts like Indonesia. My study is informed by critical postcolonial and post-development theory, but I take a cultural studies perspective, focusing on how everyday stories of progress can serve to either challenge or reinforce dominant versions of ‘modernity’ and ‘development.’ Indonesia has a long and fraught history with these terms, and certain versions have attained dominance, coming to structure the narratives of progress circulating within and about Indonesia in the post-reform context. I examine how and why particular versions of progress narratives have become so powerful, where these stories are being most strongly articulated and contested, how these stories have shifted since the demise of the long-powerful New Order regime, and the divergent ways in which central keywords like ‘development,’ and ‘modernity’ operate across different types of stories, including scholarly accounts, public debates, audience discussions, and textual representations. In order to gain a nuanced understanding of what is going on in these stories, I combine close readings of selected popular films and novels, with audience ethnography, and media v discourse analysis. I argue that a deeper understanding of both the pervasiveness and internal contradictions of progress narratives as they are articulated in each of these area can help us, as scholars, to engage more effectively with contemporary identity politics and debates around religion, region, gender, and history in Indonesia, and also to address representational inequalities in the production of knowledge more broadly.     Kathrin Trattner Game Review PAMALI: INDONESIAN FOLKLORE HORROR StoryTale Studios, Point-and-Click Horror, ID 2018 In indie and mainstream popular culture alike, Asian horror has been gaining world- wide recognition for quite some time. The most widely known digital cultural goods are produced in Japan and South Korea. However, as a Google search demon- strates, the global popularity of Indonesian horror narratives has also seen a sharp increase despite their being less broadly disseminated. For example, the number of Indonesian horror titles on Netflix is striking. Interestingly, the majority of those sto- ries draw on and incorporate the country’s rich folk traditions. Thus, tradition in its plural meaning is absolutely key here: with its diverse ethnic groups, languages, and religious traditions, Indonesia is anything but culturally homogenous. This cultural plurality is often depicted in Indonesian horror tales just as they are deeply embed- ded in Indonesian everyday life and its practices. In fact, the remarkable proximity of horror and the seemingly mundane is the basic premise of Pamali, an Indonesian folklore horror game. The first-person point-and-click horror game was (and is still being) developed by StoryTale Studios, a small indie studio based in Bandung, Indo- nesia.1 As Mira Wardhaningsih, co-creator of Pamali, explains in an interview, one of the intentions in creating the game was to introduce international audiences to a distinctively Indonesian approach to horror. As she elaborates: We believe that every culture has a different perception towards horror. Part Two examines the genealogy of and the major issues at stake in the post-New Order controversy over the rectification of history. Part Three ends with several concluding observations. First, the historiographical engineering that the New Order committed was not effective. Second, the regime created the tools for people to criticize itself, which shows that it misunderstood its own society. Third, Indonesian contemporary culture is such that people abhor the idea that there is no single truth.

Fungsi legenda semacam ini adalah untuk meneguhkan kebenaran ”takhayul” atau kepercayaan masyarakat. Contoh legenda ini yaitu adanya kepercayan terhadap hantu, seperti pocong, kuntilanak, dan tuyul. Bagi orang-orang tertentu, hantu justru dianggap sebagai tantangan hidup (memedi) dan bagi sebagian lain hantu justru akan dapat mendatangkan sebuah keuntungan. Bagi yang takut, jangankan meneliti mendengar saja membuat. Walau begitu, cerita dan wujud hantu bisa menjadi daya tarik dalam dunia hiburan, baik dibuat menjadi film bergenre horor, animasi atau bahkan dibuatkan wahana rumah hantu. Hal ini merupakan kelebihan dari objek hantu jika diangkat menjadi sebuah hasil karya. Dalam penelitian ini, metode yang dilakukan untuk melakukan riset ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan teknik pengumpulan data berupa studi literatur dari jurnal dan beberapa website resmi. Adapun tujuan dari penulisan ini, peneliti ingin merancang visual karakter pocong, kuntilanak, dan tuyul pada cerita “Keluarga Hantu Indonesia” yang diambil dari penggambaran mitos hantu yang berkembang di masyarakat. They believe in resurrection on the day of Judgement. On this day, Muslims after death will be awaken in the frontiers of barzakh and be judged and placed appropriately in either paradise or hell as promised in the holy Qur’an. By collecting data using documentary method which applied to library materials, the researcher has found that there are still a number of Muslims who were influenced by the traditional beliefs of animism, Hinduism and Buddhism. This is because the Malays were Hindus and Buddhists long before they became Muslim.

PENGENALAN WAYANG KULIT PURWA, SIMBOL, DAN CARA PANDANG MASYARAKAT JAWA II.1 Wayang UNESCO menyatakan bahwa pertunjukan wayang merupakan kesenian yang berasal dari Indonesia, dengan menggunakan boneka yang terbuat dari pahatan kulit atau kayu, kemudian digunakan untuk memerankan tokoh dalam kisah Mahabharata, Ramayana dan sebagainya kedalam sebuah pertunjukan drama tradisional (Bali, Jawa, Sunda). Dalam pertunjukan wayang, seorang dalang diperlukan untuk menentukan alur cerita sekaligus menggerakan wayang. Masyarakat mengenal wayang karena menceritakan berbagai kisah dari kitab Brahmana (Mahabharata, Ramayana, Lokapala, dan Arjunasasrabahu, Sudjarwo (dalam Nurgiyantoro, 2010). Walaupun begitu Mulyono (1979, hal. 11) mengungkapkan bahwa wayang telah ada jauh sebelum konsep agama asing masuk ke Indonesia, diperkirakan wayang sudah ada sejak zaman neolitikum dan pertunjukan wayang digunakan sebagai upacara kegamaan atau upacara yang berhubungan dengan kepercayaan terhadap Hyang. Pada masa neolitikum kisah pewayangan menceritakan tentang kepahlawanan para leluhur. Masyarakat Jawa beranggapan bahwa roh para leluhur tinggal di daerah pegunungan, pohon besar, lautan dan sebagainya. Pada 1500 SM, nenek moyang masyarakat Jawa melakukan upacara penyembahan terhadap roh leluhur yang telah meninggal dan upacara itu dikemas menjadi sebuah pertunjukan yang saat itu disebut sebagai pertunjukan bayangan, Sunarto, (2004, hal. 14). Masuknya agama Hindu memiliki dampak besar terhadap kebudayaan yang sudah ada di Indonesia, epos Ramayana dan Mahabharata memiliki kisah yang mampu sejalan dengan mitos Jawa kuno sehingga epos ini diadaptasikan kedalam mitos Jawa kuno.

Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Since 2015, the Government of Indonesia through Badan Ekonomi Kreatif (Bekraf) has developed creative economy seriously. Animation is one of the sectors of the creative industries which have developed significantly in Indonesia. Unique characters and interesting narrative are essential element which made animation succeed. Legends, myths, and folklore existed in various ethnic groups in many regions are inspiring creators to produce comics and animation movies. This article aims to analyze how the ghost stories as urban legends are adapted into the comics and animation series “Trio Hantu Cs”, and how the creator reinterpreted the stories. The method used in this research is qualitative research approach. data were collected by interviewing the creator of “Trio Hantu Cs” and, observing the animation series and also the comics. The ghosts are described as the creature who living in the different world to the human world, but they do not interrupt the human life. The animation series which are distributed through YouTube channel and social media successfully attracted many viewers as well as its comics. The research result indicates that the scary ghost stories are adapted into comic and animation movie by reinterpreting the story and the characters and to suit the current modern society.
