8 January 2008 Race Car and Drivers Attend the Great American Teach In

On November 14, 2007, Greene and Dee Isaacs and Jerry Hicks attended the Great American Teach In at Davidsen Middle School in Hillsborough County. Six presentations were given to classes of 6th, 7th and 8th graders numbering over 300. Greene brought his car and let every student sit in the car. The students asked many questions about the race car and about racing in general. Greene shared the Hans Device, Cool Suit, seat belt design, and fire suit. He also talked about SCCA Racing and how they could attend the races and join SCCA. Jerry brought his air brushed helmets and his air brush. He demonstrated the air brush and let the students try their hand at air brush painting. The day was very successful and educational for the students. All schools appreciate the participation of anyone who wants to share a profession or hobby with students on Teach In Day. You can call and volunteer at any school to be a teacher at the Teach In.

' 08 RESOLUTIONS: We all know we're one of the best regions in SCCA - but you continue to be the best, only by doing your best. Now is a good time to run through your knowledge check list. FLAGS - the two flags that are most miscalled are the yellow and the white. The yellow mantra is "Wave on the Pave - Stand on the Land. The flag condition, waving vs Standing is determined by LOCATION, not severity. Also if we go to a Double Yellow All-Around, any corner with an incident is one Yellow Waving one Yellow Standing so drivers are alerted... to Location. The other flag that can be miscalled is the White Flag for an EV going to an incident. Once it is on scene, the White Flag is withdrawn and the EV is covered by the appropriate Yellow Flag. We're the Drivers' lifeline and flags are our primary method of giving them important information for their safety as well as ours.. The other Checklist for '08 is our COMMUNICATIONS. We've really improved on giving the required information on a call but one thing we all sometimes slip up on is Radio Silence when needed. Pace lap(s) and first race laps are for emergency calls only. Also if a call around for a Black Flag is needed, or if the Tower needs to spot a car, or, of course, in an emergency situation, remember to hold all calls. If you're like me, and you're working on 'insufficient memory at this time' - write the information down and call later if needed. At a time when lots is going on - delete all minor stuff like spin and continues. Try to edit yourselves to the important basics. Hopefully the Tower will request 'held calls' when the channel clears and you can call in anything important for the log. And credit where it's due...pay it forward... and back. Thanks to all the F&C Chiefs we've trained under. Mine go from Terry Kluesner to Rich and all in between including all the Vets who've served as our mentors and instructors along the way. DAYTONA 24 HOUR: This is the usual. Pack Hot/Freezing/Rain gear. We always have some of each type .... sometimes all of the above on the weather front. Be sure your rain gear is not 'holey' which can really dampen your spirits as well as your body. Attend worker and corner meeting plus always check in with your Corner Captain when you arrive on shift. They'll keep you informed on any procedure changes or new information. Stay alert during your shifts - watch the track, but also watch your Captain. We get really strung out and it's tough to get someone's attention to relay information. Also, I can think of nothing more important than showing up early for your shift changes. Night shifts are long and usually cold and the person you replace will be anxious to get warm, dry, fed and get a chance to sleep. Do unto others as you fervently hope your replacement will do unto you! And finally ... safety is always Job One. Stay behind the barriers unless it's a real emergency, watch your back, and watch your partner's back too. Let's be Careful Out There. TO DRIVERS: For the new season ... review flags, don't forget to be sure you know the rules for the Red Flag and don't forget the signal for Fire. If you're unsure about any flags of signals, ask any Corner Worker. Also, as you prepare your car for the new season, stand back 50 yards to check your numbers .... if they're not clear to you, they're not clear to us. Helps avoid mistaken calls on our part, and black flags for illegible numbers or designations for you. And you've made the day for the Timing and Scoring team! RECOMMENDATION: I appreciate all you kind folks who have said that my column is a 'must read.' I confess that writing the column is much better therapy than going to a Shrink. In turn, I recommend a column that appears in SportsCar magazine. It's written by a well known CFR Pro and Series Driver, Randy Probst. Randy tells it like it is, and pulls no punches, being quick to acknowledge his own slips as well as that of others. It's great reading for Drivers, and also for us Workers. The column is well written and interesting/fun to read. If you haven't discovered it yet, be sure to check it out in SportsCar. The more we know about driving tips and protocol, the better we'll be able to anticipate problems on track and answer questions from the Tower concerning incidents. To carry this even further, we always invite Drivers to hang out or work with us on the Corners ... it's a very good learning experience for all of us. WELCOME TO THE 2008 RACING YEAR AND BEST WISHES FOR AN ENJOYABLE, SUCCESSFUL, AND SAFE NEW YEAR.. in everything we do, .may we all be winners!
