Numismatic Evidence of the Jewish Origins of the Cross T. B. Cartwright December 5, 2014 Introduction Anticipation for the Jewish Messiah’s first prophesied arrival was great and widespread. Both Jewish and Samaritan populations throughout the known world were watching because of the timeframe given in Daniel 9. These verses, simply stated, proclaim that the Messiah’s ministry would begin about 483 years from the decree to rebuild Jerusalem in 445BC. So, beginning about 150 BC, temple scribes began placing the Hebrew tav in the margins of scrolls to indicate those verses related to the “Messiah” or to the “Last Days.” The meaning of the letter tav is “sign,” “symbol,” “promise,” or “covenant.” Shortly after 150 BC, the tav (both + and X forms) began showing up on coins throughout the Diaspora -- ending with a flurry of the use of the symbol at the time of the Messiah’s birth. The Samaritans, in an effort to remain independent of the Jewish community, utilized a different symbol for the anticipation of their Messiah or Tahib. Their choice was the tau-rho monogram, , which pictorially showed a suffering Tahib on a cross. Since the Northern Kingdom was dispersed in 725 BC, there was no central government authority to direct the use of the symbol. So, they depended on the Diaspora and nations where they were located to place the symbol on coins. The use of this symbol began in Armenia in 76 BC and continued through Yeshua’s ministry and on into the early Christian scriptures as a nomina sacra. As a result, the symbols ( +, X and ) were the “original” signs of the Messiah prophesied throughout scriptures. -

The symbol of the cross existed in both European and American societies hundreds of years before Columbus. In both cultures, the cross was integral in religious ceremony, priestly decoration, and cosmic maps. As a symbol of life and death, of human and divine suffering, of religious and political acquiescence, no other image in transatlantic history has held such a perennial, powerful message as the cross. For colonial Mexico, which felt the brunt of Spanish initiative, the symbol of the cross penetrated the autochthonous culture out of which the independent nation and indigenous church were born. -

he collection of essays presented in “Devotional Cross-Roads: Practicing Love of God in Medieval Gaul, Jerusalem, and Saxony” investigates test case witnesses of TChristian devotion and patronage from Late Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages, set in and between the Eastern and Western Mediterranean, as well as Gaul and the regions north of the Alps. Devotional practice and love of God refer to people – mostly from the lay and religious elite –, ideas, copies of texts, images, and material objects, such as relics and reliquaries. The wide geographic borders and time span are used here to illustrate a broad picture composed around questions of worship, identity, reli- gious affiliation and gender. Among the diversity of cases, the studies presented in this volume exemplify recurring themes, which occupied the Christian believer, such as the veneration of the Cross, translation of architecture, pilgrimage and patronage, emergence of iconography and devotional patterns. These essays are representing the research results of the project “Practicing Love of God: Comparing Women’s and Men’s Practice in Medieval Saxony” guided by the art historian Galit Noga-Banai, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the histori- an Hedwig Röckelein, Georg-August-University Göttingen. Is the Cross a Christian Symbol? Do all members of Christendom, even all clergymen accept that Jesus died on a cross? Marching as to war, With the cross of Jesus Going on before. So reads the chorus to a very popular Christian hymn that churches have sung for many years. The song portrays the cross as the identifying sign of everything for which Christianity stands and around which Christians should rally in their fight against the forces of evil. Throughout the world, people universally regard the cross as THE symbol of Christianity. Churches have crosses atop their steeples, on their walls, windows and doors. Catholics and Protestants wear crosses on necklaces, bracelets, rings, pendants, key chains and items of clothing. People in some churches "cross" themselves by touching the forehead, breast, and then each shoulder to form a symbolic cross in carrying out certain religious rituals or in blessing themselves or others. Some think the sign of the cross to be effective in warding off evil spirits and for generally protecting believers from harm. All this seems perfectly natural to most people. After all, Jesus was crucified on a cross, was he not? Have not Christians used the sign of the cross throughout all ages to show to the world their belief in the saviour of mankind? Most Bible translations mention the cross many times, in both literal and figurative terms, as symbolizing the meaning of true Christianity as well as the sacrifices and trials that a true Christian must endure in this life to be true to the faith. -

RIVIER ACADEMIC JOURNAL, VOLUME 3, NUMBER 2, FALL 2007 CROSS/PURPOSE AN EXHIBITION OF ART AND ARTIFACTS WITH A THEMATIC FOCUS ON THE CROSS OF CHRISTIANITY Sr. Theresa Couture, M.F.A., D.Min.,* Director, Rivier College Art Gallery Rivier College Art Gallery October 22 œ November 30, 2007 (closed Wednesday through Friday, November 21œ23) This exhibition is a sampling of some of the many forms the Christian Cross has taken over the centuries and the purposes for which it has been used. Historically the materials from which crosses have been made, as well as their actual applications, have ranged widely. For example, crude sticks tied together with coarse twine have long been common objects of personal devotion; more closely tied to liturgical practice are elaborately tooled leather designs embellished with jewels and sculpted ivory inlays and functioning as covers for precious scriptural manuscripts and prayer books. Whether simple or ornate, crosses have been carried and worn as symbols of commitment to Christian values and as talismans against perceived evils. Governments have displayed the cross on coinage and on banners leading armies into the battles of —holy wars.“ The cross, understood as the ultimate expression of belief in the redeeming act of Jesus Christ, has been used repeatedly by the Church itself in architecture; sculpture; the design of liturgical vessels; painting, mosaic, and other two-dimensional media; and ritual gesture. Beginning with a sixth century AD coin from Constantinople, CROSS/PURPOSE winds through history to present such works as a15th century anonymous woodcut, prints from the period of the Catholic Counter-Reformation, a 19th century Ethiopian processional cross, outsider art of the 20th century, and contemporary pieces by living artists. -
