La prima edizione del "Trofeo delle Cinque Nazioni" ebbe luogo sulle nevi di Passo Rolle, località posta a 1984 metri di altitudine di fronte alla catena settentrionale delle Pale di San Martino ed alle cime orientali dei Lagorai, in una zona notoriamente caratterizzata da un forte e prolungato innevamento. Le Fiamme Gialle conquistarono la vittoria nell'edizione d'apertura, un successo definito dal "Finanziere" di quell'epoca "Entusiasmante" grazie alla gara della pattuglia di fondo e tiro (finanzieri Faccin, Sartor, e Bruno e Giacomo Mosele). Da allora una solida tradizione è andata gradualmente sviluppandosi e perfezionandosi attraverso il contributo di tutti gli Stati che, a turno, hanno ospitato le competizioni che hanno assunto, negli anni, un rilievo quanto mai rimarchevole. La storia del Trofeo Internazionale delle Cinque Nazioni si arricchisce dal 1997 fino al 2011, anche della rappresentativa della Slovenia, entrata a pieno titolo a far parte di questa prestigiosa manifestazione per il suo vasto sviluppo del confine con Italia e Austria. All'evento, che prevede la partecipazione di atleti di altissimo livello che praticano lo sci alpino, il fondo ed il biathlon è garantito un livello tecnico degli atleti schierati dalle cinque rappresentative di valore assoluto: per lo spettatore che assiste alle competizioni si tratta infatti di uno spettacolo paragonabile ad una gara dei circuiti di Coppa del Mondo. I nomi dei protagonisti che hanno contribuito a rendere eccezionale il livello delle gare sono scolpiti negli albi d'oro più prestigiosi delle varie discipline, per l'Italia citiamo quelli di Giulio Deflorian, Gustav Thoeni, Franco Nones, Piero Gros, Gottlieb Taschler, Giorgio Vanzetta, Kristian Ghedina, Manuela Moelgg, Manfred Moelgg, Massimiliano Blardone, Cristian Zorzi e tanti altri ancora. Fra le stelle delle altre rappresentative figurano oggi i tedeschi Felix Neureuther (quest’anno assente per infortunio), Fritz Dopfer, Viktoria Rebensburg, Linus Strasser, Simon Schempp, Vanessa Hinz, Franziska Preuss, i francesi Alexis Pinturault, Victor Muffat‐Jeandet, Maurice Magnificat, i svizzeri Serafin Wiestner e Selina Gasparin, gli austriaci Christof Noesig, Katharina Gallhuber, Lukas Klapfer e Daniel Mesotitsch….solo per citarne qualcuno…nomi di interpreti di assoluto rilievo protagonisti nei circuiti di Coppa del Mondo, ai Mondiali e alle recentissime Olimpiadi di PyeongChang! Il Trofeo Internazionale delle Cinque Nazioni prevede la disputa di una gara di slalom gigante e una di slalom speciale (maschile e femminile), 3 gare di fondo (10 km TL maschile ‐ 5 km TL femminile e staffetta sprint femminile) e una gara di fondo e tiro per pattuglie. Al termine dell'edizione numero 53 tenutasi a Garmisch (Germania) nel 2005, la delegazione italiana propose alcune sostanziali modifiche al regolamento che hanno ricevuto subito l'approvazione da parte delle altre nazioni. Le modifiche hanno interessato in particolar modo l'aumento del numero di concorrenti cosicché i Paesi con squadre più numerose, come ad esempio Germania e Francia, hanno potuto schierare più atleti al via rispetto alle edizioni precedenti con un conseguente incremento degli iscritti alle singole gare. Grazie a tale modifica le gare hanno così avuto una rilevanza tecnica ancor maggiore e un interesse più elevato. Sono stati inoltre istituiti quattro nuovi Trofei i quali hanno consentito, anche ai Paesi con squadre di numero ridotto, di apparire nelle classifiche delle singole gare, rendendo così ancor più combattute ed interessanti le varie competizioni. Il Trofeo Internazionale delle Cinque Nazioni, grazie alla proposta dell'Italia, si è dotato di un Comitato Tecnico Permanente, strumento idoneo a rispondere prontamente alle modifiche regolamentari che dovessero rivelarsi necessarie per rendere più interessante la manifestazione. Il Comitato Tecnico Permanente ha costituito inoltre uno stimolo per i Paesi membri nella ricerca di iniziative dirette a valorizzare ulteriormente l'evento. Una particolarità delle prove di questa edizione sarà che le gare sui 5 e 10 km Mass Start femminile e maschile di fondo saranno "open" cioè saranno aperte anche ad atleti non inseriti nelle fila delle "Guardie di Confine", dando così ancora maggior spettacolo essendo parificate a gare FIS a tutti gli effetti. A margine delle gare di sci alpino, invece, si svolgeranno delle gare riservate ai giovani atleti degli sci club locali che avranno così l’opportunità di gareggiare in un contesto unico, “fianco a fianco” con i campioni ammirati alla tv!     December 8, 2019 Shanghai, China ISU World Cup Short Track Speed Skating – Day 2 Speed queen Kim Boutin again proved why she is the skater to beat over Short Track’s shortest and wildest distance, claiming her fourth successive 500m gold on day two of the ISU World Cup in Shanghai. Such is Boutin’s raw speed over 500m this season, the Canadian could even afford to be slightly below par in China, taking the gold just ahead of Netherland’s Suzanne Schulting and Italy’s Martina Valcepina despite a performance she later described as below her best. “I’m focusing a lot on my technique and I felt my last two laps today were really bad, so I need to work on that,” she said. “I still feel like I have a lot of things to learn, and maybe that’s why I’m continuing to do well. It was the first time I’ve skated against these particular girls in a final, so it was interesting to see how they race.” Boutin is now the pre-eminent skater in Canada’s women’s team following the retirement of Marianne St Gelais, but it was not long ago she considered quitting the sport to pursue a career in children’s education. But while she still has ambitions in that field, it could be a while yet before she hangs up her skates for good. “Over the summer I questioned myself a lot,” she said. “But we changed our training a little bit to make sure I keep going to work on my skills, which helped.

Budapest-born brothers Shaolin Sandor and Shaoang Liu have been among Europe’s elite racers for several years and became national heroes two seasons ago when they formed half of the 5000m Men’s Relay team – along with Viktor Knoch and Csaba Burjan – who won gold at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games.     March 6, 2019 Sofia, Bulgaria Sofia ready for intriguing Short Track World Championships The ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Championships – the biggest event on the sport’s calendar – take place at the Arena Armeec, Sofia, Bulgaria, from March 8 to 10. It promises to be a riveting conclusion to a season in which much dynamic new talent has emerged and the greatness of others been confirmed. At the start of the ISU World Cup Short Track season many fans wondered whether the Republic of Korea’s grip on the sport’s top prizes would continue, following an Olympic Games in which challenges from the Netherlands, China, Canada, Poland, Hungary and Italy threatened to break their dominance. The answer has been both yes and no. In the Men’s competition, Korea completed a clean sweep of winners in the individual World Cup classifications, while in the Ladies’ overall, Europeans reigned supreme. Suzanne Schulting has been the standout skater from either gender. In a sport with as many variables as Short Track, she’s been about as dominant during 2018-19as it is possible to be. The Dutch ace owned the 1000m, winning four of seven possible World Cup gold medals to claim the overall title by a mile. She also came out on top in the 1500m overall competition, after winning in both Calgary and Torino. It’ll be surprising if she doesn’t grab top slot in one distance – or both – in Sofia. The 1500m feels like the race where Schulting is more vulnerable. Second in the overall World Cup standings was Kim Ji Yoo (KOR), who has hit form recently and won the 1500m in impressive style in Dresden.

    January 25, 2020 Debrecen, Hungary Unstoppable Schulting takes milestone 500m title as Liu brothers thrill home crowd Suzanne Schulting (NED) dominated the first day of finals at the 2020 European Short Track Championships in Debrecen (HUN), defending her European 1500m title and leading the 500m final from start to finish, while Hungary's own Liu brothers won a gold each in the two men's events. Dutch world No.1 Schulting has topped the podium at Olympic Games, World Championships and World Cups, and came to Hungary as the reigning European overall champion, but won a milestone career-first international 500m gold medal as she beat Italy’s Martina Valcepina and Natalia Maliszewska (POL) in the final. ”It’s really special,” the 22-year-old said. ”Normally it’s the 1000m and 1500m that I win and I usually just skate the 500m in tournaments like the Europeans and the Worlds, or in the World Cups just to keep it up, so I’m really happy with this. ”I was skating against the top of the world. With their fierce ISU World Cup rivals from Republic of Korea, Canada and China not present, it should be a close regional showdown, with skaters from the Netherlands, Hungary and Russia looking the favorites to take the spoils. Results in the Ladies’ field will certainly differ from last season’s European Championships in Dresden: back then, Italy’s Arianna Fontana was dominant, producing the sort of form that she’d take into the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games. Her compatriot Martina Valcepina finished in second place overall. Fontana isn’t skating this time around, and the smart money will be on in-form Dutch racer Suzanne Schulting, recently named as her country’s 2018 Sportswoman of the Year, taking her crown – and the Netherlands perhaps dominating as Italy did last time. Schulting has had a near-perfect season so far, winning World Cup gold in the 1000m in Calgary, Salt Lake City and Almaty, and 1500m gold in Calgary, too. The field is as wide open as it ever has been, following the withdrawal of the Republic of Korea and China teams from the competition. Men’s competition wide open There have been only four Men’s overall champions from outside these two nations this century. The 2019 ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Champion, Lim Hyojun (KOR) will not get to defend his title, nor will 2019/20 No.1-ranked skater Park Ji Won (KOR) get a shot at his first. Lee June Seo (KOR), Hwang Dae Heon (KOR), 2016 overall winner Han Tianyu (CHN) and 500m specialist Wu Dajing (CHN) will also miss out. There is added unpredictability due to the pandemic, too. As Israel’s Vladislav Bykanov told us recently, it is normally the first ISU World Cup Short Track Speed Skating race of the season where you see outsiders making it on to the podium, or big names struggling to get going. This year, there have been no ISU World Cup Short Track Speed Skating events meaning the athletes’ usual rhythm of peaking for the World Championships has not been possible. The outcome of this was illustrated at the recent ISU European Short Track Speed Skating Championships in Gdansk, Poland, which was many of the continent’s men’s first race of the season. Semen Elistratov (RUS) won the title ahead of the Hungarian favorites, Shaolin Sandor Liu and his younger brother, Shaoang Liu, who didn’t seem at their brilliant race-fit best.
