THE BEST ‘PENSIONER FREEBIE’ EVER? PETER HORROCKS

I was recently invited to the wedding of the son of an old friend of mine in Hong Kong. During the stay in the ex-Colony, I took the time to visit Macau. Apart from its famous Casinos, it transpired that Macau is home to the highest ‘Bungy jump’ in the world, a fall of 233m (780 ft) from the top of the Macau Tower. I decided to go up the Tower for the view and to watch some of the jumpers and when I bought an entry ticket was asked my age. I thought there might be an age restriction for entry to the high tower for insurance purposes, so asked why she wanted to know my age.

Astonishingly, I was told that if I was over 65 the Bungy jump from the top of the tower, normally priced at almost $4,000 Macau patacas (£370), was free! Since this was my 66th birthday, and I was on the other side of the world, it seemed an opportunity too Image 1: Being prepared good to refuse. HOOPLA! YVONNE A. CHAPPELL

I recently came across this photo in a 1982 Chairman's Bulletin. The caption reads: "Plastic goods became part of everyday life, here demonstrated in the hula-hoop being tried out by Shell girls in London in 1958." At that time I was working at Crosby Square, but can't fathom out where the photo was taken; I wonder if anybody recognises the location or any of the Shell 'girls'?

I served on the Brent Alpha 9 Lazy 'A', (A crew) from the mid-1977 hook-up until the first oil was produced, and then joined Shell and worked on the platform until my early retirement in 1999. I now live in Vancouver, Canada, and work for a research company that deals a lot with . During my time on the Brent Alpha I started a children's book on an Atari – it was 25 years ago! It was about the crew I worked with, and inspiration came from an apprentice we had who was always happy; the character Dougy in the book is based on him, and the rest of the crew followed. When PCs came along, I had to convert all my drawings, which took some time. I finally finished and had it printed in 2014. Most of the books have been sold in Canada with a few going to friends in UK. I lost touch with most of the crew I worked with and I thought the SPA News might be a good way to get in touch again.

If anyone remembers Dave and would like to get in touch, we can supply his email address. The Tales of Lazy 'A' is available on Amazon Kindle or in print from Dave – Ed.

Flying back after a blissful week in Umbria, I was a little downbeat about the prospect of shorter days, when I picked up a copy of the in-flight magazine. My spirits were lifted by an article proclaiming, “Forget millennials, the future is all about the new perennials”.

Apparently, there has never been a better time to grow old. As the younger generation is set to be worse off than their parents, the over-55s account for more than half of UK households with assets of over £500,000. Maybe we don’t quite fit in that category, but, compared with the young ones, we are cash rich, time-rich and fitter than ever. Businesses are not slow to pick up on the trend: as a result, we're no longer the 'grey pound', but more 'sterling silver', as retailers move towards courting this swelling generation. And we are more discerning than our parents, so quality of service and products continues to rise. Ten years ago, the Economist ran a story headlined, “Over 60 and Overlooked”. I would be interested to hear if you think the playing field has changed for the better.*

And so, I landed with a spring in my step, ready to face the business of autumn.

WELCOME TO SHELL

Over the summer, David Moss, GM Retail UK, introduced a new campaign, Welcome to Shell. Service stations continue to be the shop window of the company and the face of Shell. They are on a mission to make customers re-evaluate their experience of service stations. Filling up the car is generally a negative purchase: a lot of money is spent with no visible product, which causes a delay to a journey. The same amount of money would buy a meal out for two or a new pair of shoes.

There are 1,100 Shell-branded service stations in the UK, some company-owned, some franchised. In terms of products, V Power Nitro+ accounts for 15% of sales, but over 50% of all premium fuels sold in the UK, demonstrating its perceived value. LIFE IN THE ROUND SCULPTOR PATRICIA BANNISTER TALKS TO ARDELLA JONES ABOUT HER TRAVELS WITH SHELL AND A CREATIVE RETIREMENT

When maths graduate Peter met Hampshire girl Patricia at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, back in1956, the encounter added up to a long happy marriage. Whilst on National Service, Peter Bannister had been summoned for interview in an RAF recruitment drive for mathematicians; Patricia was already working as a scientific assistant on the first computer, an enormous mainframe contraption. A workplace romance blossomed. Two became one then multiplied into four with the arrival of baby Bannisters, David and Christopher.

Peter joined Shell in Supply and Planning and five years later the family was off to Venezuela. The boys attended the British School, then boarded in England, while Patricia enjoyed a busy social life as well as learning the art of Mexican papier mâché. After 10 years, Peter was posted to the Caribbean island of Curaçao.

“It was all sun and sea,” says Patricia. “The boys loved coming for the holidays. I learned to sail, which was fun, but you had to get off the island every six months for some culture and city life.”

The Bannisters’ next posting in Nairobi was less enjoyable for Patricia, who sums up her experience of the Kenyan capital as ‘boring’. The few long-term British residents had no time for ‘Nine Day Wonders’ like Patricia, who was only there for two years. Despite living in the embassy district, she found the city dirty and dangerous.

“Everyone had alarms and kept dogs. We had a night guard and, when Peter was away, a day guard too. It’s not a nice way to live.”

Patricia kept up her artistic pursuits, however, and ran a small class in papier mâché. A move to The Hague saw her teaching two popular classes.

“Holland was wonderful," says Patricia, who spent six years there. “The people were friendly and England was near. After Kenya, the shopping was great!” Old lady prays for peace Peter retired from Shell and in 1996 the couple moved to the picturesque village of

However, age brings confidence and, 1 “everyone looked out for me, involving me after visiting the Royal Academy, she feels in local life.” A fund-raising review had emboldened to submit some work next year. Patricia posing in the village hall as Autumn It’s never too late! in a Four Seasons tableau, with a pumpkin on her head and strategically placed colanders, a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the Women’s Institute’s 'Calendar Girls’.

Her new neighbours also encouraged her more serious creative endeavours. Whilst helping with the church flowers, someone suggested she create a small 2 3 sculpture for an empty niche in the nave. Although previously she had worked mainly in clay, modelling a bust of her husband a year before he died, Patricia rose to the challenge. She found a piece of Cotswold stone and carved a simple, modern Madonna and Child for the 900th anniversary of St. Mary’s Parish Church.

A second soapstone sculpture was inspired by a very different mother and child: Kim Phuc is the little Vietnamese girl, running naked from a napalm attack, in Nick Ut’s iconic 1972 photo. Patricia saw a moving photograph of the adult Kim cradling her baby, a symbol of healing and hope, which she recreated in stone.

“The carvings would sell like that,” says Patricia, “but I love them too much to lose them. There’s emotion in them. You have to see the shape in your mind, feel it, the roundness and solidity.”

Recently, Patricia has turned to painting because of the physical challenges of sculpting big pieces of stone. “The dust necessitates working in a large space or outside, but the English climate makes it difficult to use the garden,” she says regretfully. “Although I love working in the round, and solid modelling seems to be what I’m good at, I paint in oils now. I like doing portraits, mainly of my sons and the family, because I can envisage the whole form as in sculpture. I think in 3D.” Patricia is having difficulty finding sitters, however. “People don’t want to sit still, especially my grandchildren. I’d also like to paint an older person, but they can’t stay awake. I’m looking for volunteers.”

Patricia’s architect son Christopher may be too busy for portrait sitting; he was one of the design team for the Olympic vélodrome in 2012, and gave Patricia 4 a tour this impressive building before the official opening. 1) Peter; 2) Soapstone Girl; 3) Patricia at work; 4) Patricia's granddaughter

AFRICAN ADVENTURES FOR SHELL ‘ROOKIE’ ROALD

Whilst on these tours, he enjoyed the hospitality of expatriate civil servants who worked locally.

The wildlife proved a challenge: his man servant or ‘boy’, working in the garden of his Shell house, was almost killed by a black mamba. He was only saved at the last minute by Dahl running, naked, outside to alert him, just in time for ‘boy’ to skewer it with a rake. The wildlife game proved more entertaining and he loved spotting giraffe, zebra and lions, from a safe distance. These animals feature heavily in his children’s books, accompanied by funny illustrations by Quentin Blake.

Aged 23, and still based in Africa, Roald signed up for the war. After school, he joined the company in London, in 1934, and was a fairly lowly clerk for a couple of years. Showing signs of his undoubted adventurous spirit, Roald put himself forward for training that would enable him to be 2 posted abroad. He had already begun dabbling with writing stories, and in his autobiography Going Solo, he remembers an idyllic, colonial lifestyle working for the company in Tanganyika (now Tanzania) in 1938. Still in his early twenties, he was one of only three English staff responsible for oil sales covering a vast territory. Based in Dar Es Salaam, he thoroughly relished driving many miles into the outback, to visit his customers.

16 | SPA NEWS FORTY YEARS OF MEMORIES BY HELEN PAGE

I was reminded by Committee member, Sue Marlbrough, that it is 40 years since the first British oilfield, Auk, came online, though it was discovered in 1970 and production started in December 1975. It is about 150 miles southeast of Aberdeen and was operated by Expro in partnership with ESSO until October 2006, when it was bought by Talisman. In those days, the project was managed from a small office in the London Downstream building, while the engineers were based in a portacabin in Aberdeen. Tullos was still a twinkle Sue Marlborough's celebratory tankard in the company eye.

The field is named after the Auk family of sea birds. There is an (entirely fanciful) legend that it was to be called A UK, until somebody realised that the sixth field would be called F UK. The policy was rapidly changed to name the fields after sea birds. Shell’s sixth UK oilfield is called Fulmar.

Were you involved with this historic production? We’d love to hear your stories.

Still in exploration, the e-booklet of 40 years’ memories of the North Sea has been compiled by Padraig McClosky and is now available. Contact me if you would like the e-version. Auk

SIXTY YEARS OF MEMORIES

John McNamara was involved in the construction of the Shell Centre in the late 1950s/early 1960s. The plumbing work was contracted to Hadens, with over 300 plumbers working on the job. John started as a plumber’s mate, earning 3/- an hour (15p) and served his apprenticeship over the next five years. He was partly responsible for the fountain in the courtyard. Although the installation was sound, the design meant that the water blew sideways in windy weather, drenching passers-by. It earned the nickname “The Blow Through”! Construction included state-of-the-art technology to draw water from the Thames, as a cooling main. Disputes between the heating engineers and the plumbers as to who should be responsible resulted in a 13-week strike, for what should have been a three-week job. The plumbers won, so the heating engineers went on strike. John was very young to be elected as shop steward at the age of 19 – a rather difficult job. However, the job was not without its perks; John was one of the first to swim in the pool (unofficially). He and his mates left a memory pack under the lead work on the roof, with their names and rates of pay. The photos are a good reminder of how far we have come in terms of safety!

Nick Edmonds, Branch Chair: “We normally arrange two annual events in London (we use London Walks and budget on £20 per head). Our own members and friends have also volunteered guided tours. Events are arranged midweek and, more recently, on a Saturday evening, when we tried the 'Shuttleworth Proms' (WW2 popular songs with a blend of Scottish Chair Brian Hope with a Shell Aviation Spirit can vintage aircraft flying to orchestral music).
