Synopsis sheets Rivers of the World The Garonne and the Adour-Garonne basin The Garonne and the Adour-Garonne basin The Garonne is a French-Spanish river whose source lies in the central Spanish Pyrenees, in the Maladeta massif, at an altitude of 3,404 m. It flows for 50 km before crossing the border with France, through the Gorges du Pont-des-Rois in the Haute-Garonne department. After a distance of 525 km, it finally reaches the Atlantic Ocean via the Garonne estuary, where it merges with the river Dordogne. The Garonne is joined by many tributaries along its course, the most important of which are the Ariège, Save, Tarn, Aveyron, Gers, Lot, and others, and crosses regions with varied characteristics. The Garonne is the main river in the Adour-Garonne basin and France’s third largest river in terms of discharge. par A little history… A powerful river taking the form of a torrent in the Pyrenees, the Garonne’s hydrological regime is pluvionival, characterised by floods in spring and low flows in summer. It flows are strongly affected by the inflows of its tributaries subject to oceanic pluvial regimes. The variations of the Garonne’s discharges are therefore the result of these inputs of water, staggered as a function of geography and the seasons. In the past its violent floods have had dramatic impacts, such as that of 23 June 1875 at Toulouse, causing the death of 200 people, and that of 3 March 1930 which devastated Moissac, with around 120 deaths and 6,000 people made homeless. -

RECENT MILITARY HERITAGE: A REVIEW OF PROGRESS 1994-2004 A report for Research and Strategy Summary This short report outlines English Heritage’s work on recent military heritage, 1994-2004, focussing on: 1 Commissioned work 2 Internal projects/programmes 3 Advice and influence 4 Management and protection 5 Research agenda 6 European and wider contacts 7 Outreach Much of the commissioned work (s1, below) was undertaken in the period 1994-1999, prior to the creation of English Heritage’s Military and Naval Strategy Group (MNSG) in 1999, and a policy head for military and naval heritage in 2001. Much of what is described in s2-7 (below) was undertaken through the influence and activities of MNSG. A series of annexes provide further details of commissioned work, in-house surveys, publications, conferences and MNSG membership. Review, 1994-2004 1 Commissioned work (Annex 1) Much original research has been commissioned by English Heritage since 1994, largely through its Thematic Listing and Monuments Protection Programmes. This has created a fuller understanding of twentieth century defence heritage than existed previously. For some subjects it contributed to, clarified or expanded upon previous studies (eg. Anti-invasion defences); for others the research was entirely new (eg. Bombing decoys of WWII). Commissioned projects have included: archive-based studies of most major classes of WWII monuments; aerial photographic studies documenting which sites survive; a study of post-medieval fortifications resulting in a set of seven Monument Class Descriptions; studies of aviation and naval heritage, barracks, ordnance yards and a scoping study of drill halls; and characterisation studies of specific key sites (RAF Scampton and the Royal Dockyards at Devonport and Portsmouth). -

Daniel Pellerin Supervisor: Serge Marc Durflinger 2016 During the Second World War, training was the Canadian Army’s longest sustained activity. Aside from isolated engagements at Hong Kong and Dieppe, the Canadians did not fight in a protracted campaign until the invasion of Sicily in July 1943. The years that Canadian infantry units spent training in the United Kingdom were formative in the history of the Canadian Army. Despite what much of the historical literature has suggested, training succeeded in making the Canadian infantry capable of succeeding in battle against German forces. Canadian infantry training showed a definite progression towards professionalism and away from a pervasive prewar mentality that the infantry was a largely unskilled arm and that training infantrymen did not require special expertise. From 1939 to 1941, Canadian infantry training suffered from problems ranging from equipment shortages to poor senior leadership. In late 1941, the Canadians were introduced to a new method of training called “battle drill,” which broke tactical manoeuvres into simple movements, encouraged initiative among junior leaders, and greatly boosted the men’s morale. -

2nd INFANTRY REGIMENT 1110 pages (approximate) Boxes 1243-1244 The 2nd Infantry Regiment was a component part of the 5th Infantry Division. This Division was activated in 1939 but did not enter combat until it landed on Utah Beach, Normandy, three days after D-Day. For the remainder of the war in Europe the Division participated in numerous operations and engagements of the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace and Central Europe campaigns. The records of the 2nd Infantry Regiment consist mostly of after action reports and journals which provide detailed accounts of the operations of the Regiment from July 1944 to May 1945. The records also contain correspondence on the early history of the Regiment prior to World War II and to its training activities in the United States prior to entering combat. Of particular importance is a file on the work of the Regiment while serving on occupation duty in Iceland in 1942. The aim of this article is to trace the most important implications of the ‘military bias’ of state authorities in the border region between the three empires (Germany, Russia and Austria – later the Austro-Hungarian Empire) which occupied the Central and Eastern part of the continent. Military authorities sometimes exercised a particularly strong infl uence upon urban policy. The two major issues addressed in this article are the fortifi cations (their creation, strengthening, and spatial development) which infl uenced urban sprawl – though perhaps not so much as is maintained in the scholarly literature – and the development of railways. The directions and tracks chosen for the railways were also infl uenced by the military plans, which in turn often differed much from the visions of the urban offi cials who made up the administration of the city.
